The Sydney Harbour Bridge
Why should the Sydney Harbour Bridge be inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage List ?• It is an important part of Sydney• It has lots of history to it• The Sydney Harbour Bridge has an architectural
structure like no other • It fits the UNESCO criteria • The Sydney harbour bridge is an Australian heritage
site
How does the Sydney Harbour Bridge fit the UNESCO criteria culturally ?
• Monumentally• Groups of buildings• SitesTo see the world heritage criteria below
Monumentally• The Sydney Harbour bridge has four pillars, two on
each side where the cars pass through• The Sydney Harbour bridge architectural design is like
no other because, on a normal bridge there would be support poles halfway or on any other point
• Also it weighs over 50 000 tonnes and has no supporting poles so its very well designed
• On the four large pillars no two stone blocks are the same size or weight
• It has two large arches going from one side to the other that were put together from 1000 pieces
Groups of Buildings• There are four pillars connecting the bridge from each corner• It is situated in the central part of Sydney and stretching over
the beautiful harbour, right next to the already inscribed Opera House, it connects the Northern and Southern parts of Sydney
• It has lots of history behind it and is near Cockatoo Island and the Governor-General House
Sites• The bricks on the pillars had to be chiselled out from
larger stones in other countries, and each took about two weeks to cut, then had to be shipped to Sydney Cove and then lifted from the ship and put into the right place
• It took a few years to build with 4,200 workers, that created lots of jobs for Sydney people
• It combines with nature by being stretched over the harbour
That is why the Sydney Harbour Bridge
Should be on the World Heritage List
