RECYCLING

Recycling - the act of processing used or abandoned materials for use in creating new products.

WHAT IS IT ?

Reduce

Reuse

Recycle We need to be able to identify old products which could be made into something new. Is the product recyclable?

We need to reduce the amount of the earth's resources we use to make products which may not be essential.

We need to adopt the habit of reusing products. Don't just throw an item away, instead, why not see if a friend, relative, or charity can make use of the item.

WHY RECYCLE

Reasons why we should all recycle :

• Energy Saving

• Material Conservation

• Reduction Of Rubbish In Landfills

• Helping The Environment

Page 9: WHY RECYCLE ? LOCAL AGENDA 21 KL PRESENTER: SOORIA GANDHI RAO 3 RD MARCH 2009

ENERGY SAVING

• Recycling reduces the amount of energy needed to create a new, similar product. If we didn't recycle paper, more trees would have to be chopped down, transported, and manufactured into the finished product.

• Energy conservation is one of the key ingredients for the fight against climate change.

By recycling over 1 million tons of steel in 2004, Pennsylvanians saved 1.3 million tons of iron ore, 718,000 tons of coal, and 62,000 tons of limestone.

Page 10: WHY RECYCLE ? LOCAL AGENDA 21 KL PRESENTER: SOORIA GANDHI RAO 3 RD MARCH 2009

CONSERVATION

• All man-made products incorporate raw materials to create the finished product. This involves harvesting the earth's natural resources (e.g. wood, metal) in order to acquire the raw materials.

• Deforestation is a prime example of how harvesting natural resources is harming the environment. This could be reduced if we recycle more paper and old wooden products.

Page 11: WHY RECYCLE ? LOCAL AGENDA 21 KL PRESENTER: SOORIA GANDHI RAO 3 RD MARCH 2009

LANDFILL REDUCTION

• The more we recycle, the more we can help to reduce the burden on local and national landfill sites. As population levels increase, we will need to find more landfill sites, which will harm the surrounding environment and wildlife.

• This is another important reason why we should recycle more, in order to reduce the impact landfills have on the surrounding environment.

Page 12: WHY RECYCLE ? LOCAL AGENDA 21 KL PRESENTER: SOORIA GANDHI RAO 3 RD MARCH 2009

REDUCE POLLUTION• Tied in with energy saving, is the reduction of

pollution as a result of manufacturing processes becoming more efficient.

• Any reduction in CO2 or other harmful gases is not only a key ingredient for the fight against climate change, but a key ingredient for cleaning the air we breathe.

• If we can reduce pollution levels from the manufacturing industry by a significant level, this could have a positive impact on our health.

WHY RECYCLE

• Global warming is no longer a theory it has sadly become a fact.

• The change needed must be in your actions today in order to ensure a bright (not too hot) tomorrow.

RECYCLINGHOW DOES IT HELP:• To reduce the consumption of fresh raw

materials.• To reduce energy usage.• To reduce air (from biogas) and water (from

leachate-landfilling) pollution by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal.

• To lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin poduction.

Recycling is a key component of modern waste management and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" waste hierarchy.

POTENTIAL CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACT

Source: US EPA

•If greenhouse gas concentrations keep rising, climatic changes are likely to result.

•Effects will be on the environment and socio-economic and related sectors, such as health, agriculture, forests, water resources, coastal areas and biodiversity.

Page 16: WHY RECYCLE ? LOCAL AGENDA 21 KL PRESENTER: SOORIA GANDHI RAO 3 RD MARCH 2009

GREENHOUSE EFFECT

• Human activities are causing greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere to increase.

• This graphic explains how solar energy is absorbed by the earth's surface, causing the earth to warm and to emit infrared radiation.

• The greenhouse gases then trap the infrared radiation, thus warming the atmosphere.

ORGANIC WASTE

• Nearly 50% of total MSW is ORGANICS

• If this can be diverted from the landfills than half our problems are solved.

• Landfill will not choke too soon.

• Biogas and Leachate will be reduced tremendously.

• Reduction of CO2

VERMICOMPOST

Vermicompost is the end-product of the breakdown of organic matter by some species of earthworm. Containing water-soluble nutrients, microbes, and bacteria.
