Arthritis or Injury? Know the Symptoms. If you’ve taken a fall, bumped a joint or engaged in activity that’s left you feeling sore, it’s possible you have sustained an injury. Persistent pain could also indicate arthritis—take note of your symptoms and speak to a doctor. If you notice any of the symptoms listed to the right, you could be experiencing arthritis pain.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the most common type of arthritis is osteoarthritis, which involves wear-and-tear damage to joint cartilage. This causes bone to grind against bone, resulting in pain and restricted movement.

In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the body’s immune system attacks joint capsule lining, which encases joint parts. This disease can eventually destroy cartilage and bone.

ARTHRITIS SYMPTOMS CAN INCLUDE:

• Joint pain, swelling or tenderness

• Redness or warmth in joint areas

• Limited range of motion in joints

• Stiffness, especially in mornings

ARTHRITIS RISK FACTORS:

• Risk of arthritis increases with age

• Women are more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis

• If you’ve had a previous injury, developing arthritis is more likely

• Excess weight puts stress on joints, leading to higher risk

Acute Pain vs. Chronic PainEvery time you’re injured, the pain you experience is your body telling you to get help. If you stub your toe on the coffee table, for example, you’re experiencing acute pain. Lingering pain—which lasts months or even years—is a whole other category. Know the difference and track the specifics of your symptoms for a more meaningful conversation with your doctor.

ACUTE PAIN• Usually sudden and with an obvious cause

• Fades away with time, depending on injury

• Increases heart and breathing rates and raises blood pressure

CHRONIC PAIN• Lasts months, possibly even years

• Comes and goes, but can remain constant

• Interrupts sleep patterns, decreases appetite, can lead to depression

When you undergo joint replacement surgery, you’re not just repairing a problem—you’re transforming your life. As with any big life change, knowing exactly what you’re getting into is key. Our Joint Endeavor program helps joint replacement patients and their families know what to expect before, during and following surgery. Rest easy knowing that once it’s time for surgical preparation, and follow-up recuperation, you won’t go through it alone.

From education classes covering pre- and post-operative care, to advice on how to prepare your home for a safe return, our Orthopedic Coordinators will assist you every step of the way. Whether it’s establishing goals and expectations, managing your rehabilitation efforts or answering any questions you may have, we are here to help.

True to its name, Joint Endeavor is a partnership—one that’s resulted in outstanding patient outcomes. It’s one of the reasons we’ve earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval.

ACTIVE ORTHOPEDIC SURGEONS AT LOURDES

Strain or Sprain? While they may sound interchangeable, strains and sprains affect the body differently. In either case, it is wise to consult a physician for lingering pain from moderate-to-severe injuries.

Strains are injuries to muscles or tendons (which fasten muscles to your bones). These typically are the result of overuse of muscles, overstretching or excessive muscle contraction. Sprains occur when ligaments (the tissues that bind bones to one another) are stretched or torn. They typically are born out of awkward bends or the overstretching of joints. Sprains typically require a visit to a physician.

LOWER YOUR RISK FOR STRAINS AND SPRAINS BY:

• Warming up and stretching before exercise

• Limiting exertion when tired or in pain

• Wearing protective equipment and shoes that fit properly

• Exercising on even surfaces to prevent falls or ankle rolls

5 Tips to Reduce Fall RisksFalls are the leading cause of injury among older adults. Here are five simple tips you can use to reduce your risk.

STAY ACTIVEWhen you remain active, even with gentle exercise, you increase your strength, coordination and balance, thereby reducing risk of falls. Consult your doctor on which exercises are right for you.

CHANGE YOUR SHOESHigh heels may be the height of fashion, but they can lead to tumbles. Consider trading in your slippers, flip-flops and slick footwear for shoes with nonskid soles.

ELIMINATE HOME HAZARDSLoose electrical cords, low-profile furniture, loose floorboards, lumpy rugs and other hazards can lead to tripping. Clear hallways and high-traffic areas to reduce your risk.

LET THERE BE LIGHTShed light on hard-to-see hazards by investing in bedside lamps, hallway night lights or flashlights for power outages. Always flip a switch before going upstairs so your path is clearly lit.

USE ASSISTIVE DEVICESInstall and always use handrails on stairs, nonslip mats for bathtubs, or grab bars for the shower or tub. Likewise, talk to your doctor about canes or walkers if you feel you might need one.

Injured? Remember RICE.In the event of ankle, knee, elbow or other joint trauma, remember RICE — Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. It’s a four-step method you can use at home to counter pain and swelling.

The RICE method can provide relief for minor injuries. If pain persists, you may have a moderate or serious injury and it is advised that you contact an orthopedic physician.

REST First and foremost, stop what you’re doing and take pressure off the affected area. The pain you feel is your body telling you to take a break. Use a cane or crutches if necessary.

ICE Apply an ice pack (insulated by a towel) to the injury to minimize swelling. Ten to 20 minutes, three to five times per day should do the trick. After two or three days, apply heat to the area.

COMPRESSION Wrap the affected area with an elastic bandage. If you feel tingling or more pain, loosen your wrap. Consult a physician after 48 to 72 hours if there is no decrease in pain.

ELEVATION Grab an armful of pillows and keep the injured area elevated throughout the process. Try to keep the injury at or above your heart level to minimize swelling.
