Take a minute to look around the room you're in and notice how many things are

made out of paper. There may be books, a few magazines, some printer paper, and

perhaps a poster on the wall.

The fact is, world consumption of paper has grown 400% in the

last 40 years. Now nearly 35% of the total trees cut around the

world are used in paper industries on every continent. Besides

what you can see around you, paper comes in many forms from

envelopes to cardboard packaging to printers to scanners to

electrical plugs. In short, paper is everywhere.

Rainforests are most obviously a source of wood, cut to make timber or pulped to produce paper & packaging. Global trade in tropical timber is valued at approximately $16 billion, of which half is exported to China, to be turned into the furniture, flooring & paper. The bulk of this is harvested unsustainably and/or illegally.

Over half the world’s plant and animal species are found in the rain forests. 15 million hectares of tropical forests are lost every year - an area larger than the size of England. Over 40% of trees cut in British Columbia are used to produced paper. Rainforests once covered 14% of the earth's land surface; now they cover a mere 6% & experts estimate that the remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years. The Rethinking Printing Report found that despite a high level of environmental concern (63%), office workers are failing to change their workplace printing behaviour, printing as much paper as ever with more than a third printing more than they did last year. Only 22% claimed to have printed less.

represents 35% of the actual trees cut down.

70% less energy is required to recycle paper compared with making it from raw materials If no action is taken, rainforests will practically disappear within 50 years.

It really all depends on the size of the tree. According to pa-per manufacturer Boise Cascade, however, a cord of wood (wood stacked 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet, or 128 cubic feet) produces nearly 90,000 sheets of paper or 2,700 copies of a 35-page newspaper!
