DESCRIPTION

Games do not need to "grow up" or become like movies. That is a perception issue, but games actually generate culture rather than exploit it, and should be considered the primary medium of the next century.

The “Mature/Converge” Lens Is Wrong

The functionalist holds that there is some distinctive need met by art in our lives and that it is in terms of this need that art is to be defined. While art might meet many interests – for example it might be valued as a financial investment – such interests explain why artworks might be referred to and appreciated as investments and the like, but they do not explain why we have the concept of art and appreciate artworks qua art. The primary value of art is hedonic, rather than moral or pragmatic.

- Functional and Procedural Definitions of Art, Journal of Aesthetic Education 1990

A work of art in the classificatory sense is 1) an artefact 2) upon which some person or persons acting on behalf of a certain social institution (the artworld) has conferred the status of candidate for appreciation.
