Why did God create the
world?People often ask “Why did God
create the world?”. It is a mess, with suffering, problems and injustice.
We will examine the question, but ultimately, we must be
satisfied with the answers God supplies!
Deuteronomy 29:29The secret things belong to the
LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
Some things we can know, they “belong to us”. Other things we
cannot find out!
Ecclesiastes 8:16-17When I applied my heart to know
wisdom and to see the business that is done on earth, even though one sees no sleep day or night, 17 then I saw all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. For though a man labors to discover it, yet he will not find it; moreover, though a wise man attempts to know it, he will not be able to find it.
God created the world because He
chose to!
Romans 9:19-21
Romans 9:19-21You will say to me then, “Why does
He still find fault? For who has resisted His will?” 20 But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?
The existence of the universe declares the glory
and righteousness of God
Psalm 19:1-3; 50:6Romans 1:20
Psalm 19:1-3; 50:6(19:1-3), The heavens declare the
glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. 2 Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. 3 There is no speech nor language Where their voice is not heard.
(50:6), Let the heavens declare His righteousness, For God Himself is Judge.
Romans 1:20For since the creation of the world
His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse.
The world is evidence of God’s attributes, and He expects us to
seek Him out (cf. Acts 17:27)
God created human beings with free will, so we would choose
to serve Him
Genesis 1:27Genesis 2:16-17
Genesis 1:27So God created man in His own
image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
“In His own image” certainly includes free moral agency, and
the ability to make moral decisions
Genesis 2:16-17And the LORD God commanded the
man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
With the command is the reality that man could choose to disobey!
God wants people to choose good, but we have all gone astray
Ecclesiastes 7:29Romans 3:23
Ecclesiastes 7:29Truly, this only I have found: That
God made man upright, But they have sought out many schemes.
Why blame God for the messes and suffering on earth? God is not
at fault for the evil that exists.
Romans 3:23For all have sinned and fall short of
the glory of God.
If you want to know who to blame for suffering, just look in a mirror!
God did not want us to suffer for our sins,
so He planned to save us through His
Son
Genesis 3:15Ephesians 1:7-10
Genesis 3:15So the Lord God said to the serpent:
“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.”
Ephesians 1:7-10 In Him we have redemption through
His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9 having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10 that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth—in Him.
Conclusion• God created the world, and
mankind as a blessing and wonderful gift.
• Man tried to foul it all up, by disobeying and sinning against Him.
• However, God has “saved the day” in devising His great scheme of redemption, accomplished in His Son.
