ethnic minority living inMyanmar.

THE OPPOSITION
Theravada Buddhists have historicallybelieved that the health of the religion andstrength of the state were interconnected.

For many Buddhists the presence of a relativelylarge population of Muslims represents a threat
to both Buddhism and to the state.
In June 2012 rioting and violence spread inresponse to the rape and murder of a Buddhist
woman, allegedly by Rohingya men
THE CONFLICT
As a result over 100,000 people were displaced,with many killed and properties destroyed.
Around 800,000 Rohingya are not recognized asBurmese citizens but seen as Bangladeshi
immigrants and are denied basic civil rights.
