"O you who believe, intoxicants, and gambling, and altars, and arrows of chance are tools of affliction used by the devil. You shall avoid him so that you may be successful." (5:90)

"They ask you about intoxicants and gambling.

Say: “In them is great harm, and a benefit for the people; but their harm is greater than their benefit.” And they ask you how much are they to give, Say: “The excess.” It is thus that God clarifies for you the revelations that you may think." (2:219)

Imam Sadiq (MGB)  expressed the reason why we are forbidden to drink wine or alcoholic drinks

“An alcoholic is like an idol-worshipper. He will suffer from shivering. His manliness will disappear. He will dare to violate the forbidden. He will commit fornication and bloodshed. Moreover, even his closest relatives are not secure from being molested by him when he is drunk

The Adolescent Brain is StillDeveloping

During adolescence, the brain isundergoing dramatic transformations

In some brain regions, over 50%ofneuronal connections are lost

Some new connections are formedNet effect is pruning (a loss of neurons)

Page 22: why alcohol forbidden in islam

These brain changes arerelevant to adolescentbehavior

Prefrontal cortex (PFC) ispruned; not fullydeveloped until mid-20’s

Amygdala (and n.a.) showless pruning and tend

From “Oops” to Dependence

Page 26: why alcohol forbidden in islam

First use to “FEEL GOOD”Some continue tocompulsively use becauseof the reinforcing effects(e.g., to “FEEL NORMAL”)Changes occur in the“reward system” thatpromote continued use

“Oops Phenomenon”

Page 27: why alcohol forbidden in islam

Reward System

The reward system isresponsible for seekingnatural rewards thathave survival valueseeking food, water, sex, and nurturing

Dopamine is thissystem’s primaryneurotransmitter

Page 28: why alcohol forbidden in islam

Drugs Hijack the Brain’sReward Circuitry

Immediate effect of drug use is an increasein dopamine

Continued use of drugs reduces the brain’sdopamine production.

Because dopamine is part of the rewardsystem, the brain is “fooled” that the drughas survival value for the organism.

The reward system responds with “drugseeking behaviors” Craving occurs and, eventually, dependence.

(a) Hearing voices? These are called auditory hallucinations.

It starts with buzzing in the ears and becomes voices saying unpleasant things . (b) Seeing crawling bugs? Delirium tremens: 2-5

days after alcohol withdrawal trembling starts, with nightmares usually of animals

e.g. crawling insects. It only lasts a few days but because the experience is terrifying

one could die by injuring themselves when they are confused.

WITHDRAWAL OF ALCOHOL AFTER PROLONG ALCOHOL ABUSE

ALCOHOLIC SEIZURES (RUM FITS)-

generalized fits usually 10-12 hours after heavy drinking.

Multiple fits (2-6 one time)are more common than single seizure.
