Board of Trustees Our Board of Trustees held their first meeting after school yesterday. The Board have unanimously co-opted Alexandra Davids to the Board for governance expertise and elected her to be the new Board Chairperson. You may contact Alexandra at anytime via email [email protected] or by cellphone 021 308 440.

Our Roll Growth Classrooms The construction of our new Senior Block, Kāmata, is speeding along and the builders, HRS Construction hope to have the roof on and the building wrapped by the end of term. The design of the new block follows the design of the other classroom blocks with the addition of interior sliding doors between classrooms, so they can be opened to create larger learning spaces when required. After the completion of the building during Term 4, we will be equipping the block with new furniture and equipment ready for use by Year 5 and 6 at the start of 2020. Next year the Kārawha and Kōrari Blocks will swap over year levels to allow a smooth transition of our students through the year levels from our Reception class Te Kura Waka. Kākano will remain the Junior Block.

School Uniform Schooltex have advised that they will replace any new items of school uniform with the Whītau logo on where the logo has been put on crooked! Please inquire at The Warehouse Eastgate. As sizes in our former LNS school uniform sell out they will be replaced by the new Whītau School uniform. Please ensure your child comes to school warmly dressed! It is NOT acceptable for students to be arriving at school on these cold frosty mornings dressed only in their green polo shirts. All children should have their KidsCan jacket at school daily please.

NZPF Conference Next week I will be away from school attending the New Zealand Principals Conference in Auckland. The theme of the conference is ‘Renaissance not Reformation’. Currently there is huge potential change, given the acknowledgement by many of the need to refresh our education system in Aotearoa NZ. The learning at the conference will be about the time for renewal, new beginnings and ‘big’ step change in our sector, rather than the addition of continuous layers of smaller changes such as we have seen since the introduction of Tomorrow’s Schools in 1989. The Maori whakatauki – ‘Kotahi te tapuwae, he mano, he mano kei muri’ – (the first footprint is followed by 1000s upon 1000s), acknowledges where we have come from and that what we do today will impact on the future of those to come. In my absence next week, Miss Amy Collins will be Acting Principal.

Kind regards everyone Sandra Smith, JP Principal - Tumuaki

Positive Behaviour for Learning Schoolwide: PB4L-SW@LNS – Week 9 This week our focus is: Be A Learner - Ask for help when you need it

What does this look like at home? ⇒ Look at the person ⇒ Ask the person if she or he has time to help you ⇒ Clearly explain the kind of help that you need

News from Room 7 and Mrs Anglesey As we near the end of term, we are starting to finish our sustainability inquiry. This has led to the children making some

thoughtful environmental changes. It has been great to hear feedback of children taking their learning home and

switching off lights or asking for paper straws. We are also coming to the end of our Matariki art project in which we

made a special cloak. As you can see from the photo our cloak is made from children’s handmade feathers. These are

woven between coloured craft feathers and outlined with the stars of Matariki. Each child designed their own feather

which is why you see a multitude of colours and patterns. Each feather is as unique and individual as the children in

Room 7.

News from Kākano Team and Miss Collins We have had a busy term learning about Sustainability and Matariki. A highlight was showcasing our kākahu at Matariki In The Zone. The students had created four kākahu in house colours. Kākano’s Whero kākahu has the traditional look which has dark grey wool threaded through and made into tassels. It has a kowhaiwhai pattern using mā, Pango and whero colours, as well as the feather lacing the top. Kākano’s Kākāriki kākahu represents Tane Mahuta, Guardian of the Forest. Linking to our Sustainability Inquiry and making connections about how our planet is precious, we have used materials we have found around our classrooms to create the tree canopy and recycled fabric for the trunk. Kākano’s Kākāriki kākahu represents the link between our Pacific Nations and Aotearoa. Our students created their own Tapa cloth and worked collaboratively to stitch the pieces together to form the quilt. Each square represents a student and their whānau. Kākano’s Kikorangi kākahu can be interpreted as representing Tangaroa, Guardian of the Sea or Tāwhiri-mātea, Guardian of the Wind. Also linking to our Sustainability Inquiry, we used unused materials from around our classrooms to create our koru design, and used paint to create a blue backdrop. We will be displaying these in the Hall for everyone to see. Thank you Kākano teachers for modelling our tamariki’s work! - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
