Repeating an earlier message ….
Whose Newsletter is This? I often hear this referred to as “Lance’s newsletter”. It’s not. It’s the sport’s. All of it – athletes, clubs, harriers, T & F, juniors, administrators, officials, everyone. As such it is a vehicle to tell your stories – what your club or section of the sport is doing - profiles, thanking and featuring hard working people in your club, innovations, what’s coming up, what has been. So if you have news, views, opinions or want to promote your part of the sport, send in the details (email to this address) and make it part of this, your newsletter.

Winter Running Season Finishes at Surrey Park It may have been a short distance for a crosscountry race and no real hills or mud, but as Dwight Grieve said, “that’s a testing course.”
Dwight tested himself to the limit trying to catch winner Jack McNaughton with his final, desperate sprint falling short by 1 second, while Jack sensing he was being run down dug deep into his reserves to just make the finish line in front.
While youngsters had a one lap option, most chose to run three laps, with some putting pressure on a parent – Jacob Boniface in particular as he almost caught dad Rueben while Jordis and Xanthe Belesky can claim one-up on Mum Lyla. Will make for some interesting family bragging rights in the future. Scott made it a fast start but skipped laps 2 and 3.
Zig zagging the bank – ups and downs and tight turns.
Close finishes - Ian just holding out Rueben holding out Tyrone holding out Jacob
Jaxon demonstrating hurdle and long jump technique both at the same time.

What’s next for Southland Running? Even with this season just ending it’s not too early to start thinking about running and racing for next winter.
What events?
What frequency?
How many club runs and how many races?
What distances?
When should races be in the year?
What’s important you?
What isn’t.
Ideas for new events – relays, off road, hill races … what?
Have your say at the Harrier Committee AGM, 7.30pm Thursday October 13th at the St Pauls clubrooms.

More School Reports. Continuing the series of Southlanders looking forward to the New Zealand Secondary School T & F Championships in December. This time it’s Yvonne van Baarle of SGHS (although originally Blue Mountain College) Yvonne is no stranger to national secondary school champions, this will be her 5th. And her last. So the year 13 SGHS student would like to make it a good one.
She has entered the 100m hurdles, javelin, shot put, long jump and likely will also be needed for a SGHS relay team, although the javelin is her main focus. The other events are included as part of her build up towards the Southland and later in the season, the national combined events championships.
While javelin is her best shot at Auckland (she has two NZSS silvers and a gold from previous champs) she sees combined events is where her future lies.
Last year’s NZSS was her first year as a senior and she considered it a learning experience; this year she has set goals and has been training hard in recent weeks to achieve them. Yvonne (left) SGHS 4 x 100m relay
Yvonne hasn’t made firm plans for next year as yet and athletically she’s content at this stage just to see where the sport takes her. But until then there’s still Auckland and her final NZSS championship to look forward to.
