The word “Yelm” is rooted in the CoastalSalish word “shelm” which means “shimmer-ing heat waves from the sun.”

The Yelm Prairie was originally inhabited by members of the Nisqually Indian Tribe. The fi rst permanent American settlers cameto the Nisqually Valley in 1853 to joinHudson’s Bay Co. sheep farmers who were already in the area.

With the coming of the Northern Pacifi cRailroad in 1873, Yelm began to prosper, having found an outlet for its agricultural and forestry products. Its economic base was further enhanced in the early 1900swhen an irrigation company was formed in1916, making Yelm a center for commercialproduction of beans, cucumbers, and berries.

Yelm was offi cially incorporated on Dec. 10, 1924.

During the Great Depression, the YelmIrrigation Co. was bankrupted by highmaintenance costs and an unstructured waterdistribution plan.

Now, Yelm is home to the fi rst Class A Water Reclamation Facility and distributionsystem in Washington state. This systemreclaims all of its waste water to irrigate landscaping at churches, parks, schools and homes. The water also is added to streamsand is used to recharge water underground at a city wetland park that includes a catch-and-release fi sh pond for rainbow trout.

Rainier started out as a sawmill town onthe Tenalquot Prairie. It was named in 1884by offi cials of the Northern Pacifi c Railway, because of its proximity to Mount Rainier.

The area was settled in 1890 by Albert and Marie Gehrke, and in 1891, the town was platted, or laid out, by George Ellsbury, who hailed from the city of Binghampton,New York. Rainier’s main street, Binghamp-ton Street, still bares his town’s name.

Rainier was incorporated as a town in 1947,and in 2001, city council members chose tomake Rainier a full-fl edged, code city.

Similar to its neighbor city, Yelm, devas-tating fi res helped shape the cityscape. Firesin the late 1920s, and throughout the 1930s,destroyed mills and town buildings. The lastbig fi re, in 1974, destroyed the 42-year-oldRainier High School.

Still, some historic buildings remain, such as a decades-old pioneer Lutheran churchand the original red Rainier Grade School. Rainier’s Historical Society is working torefurbish the old school, which now houses athrift shop, food bank and art gallery.

Community-wide events help bring smalltowns together, and Rainier is no exception.Besides its annual Bluegrass Festival and Round-Up Days, the city also supports a community Christmas celebration.

The City of Roy was incorporated in 1908,and is now a code city with a mayor-councilform of government.

Established as a town in 1908, the Cityof Roy, located between Spanaway andYelm on State Highway 507, is best knownfor three things — the Roy Pioneer Rodeo, the annual Fourth of July Parade, andSilvaseed, Co.

Roy’s annual Fourth of July Parade drawsever-growing crowds and more participationeach year.

Cowboys and rodeo fans fi ll the towntwice a year for the bucking action of the Roy Pioneer Rodeo.

Established in 1903, C. H. Manning opened the Manning Seed Co. and shared his planting secrets with only a handful of trusted employees. Today, Silvaseed produces sixmillion container trees each year, while the transplant fi elds yield three to four million trees, annually.

The historic old building at the top of the hill in Roy, known as the “old gym,” is now a community activity center, restored by theAssociation for Roy Youth. With a substan-tial grant from Pierce County and bucket loads of elbow grease, volunteers breathed new life into the historic building for com-munity events.

Also, the annual Christmas tree lighting is held near Roy City Hall in December. The salmon homecoming party is held in

Roy City Park each January or February towelcome the salmon home to Muck Creekas they make their way to spawning groundsupstream.
