Letter from the Editor Tara L. Robinson, [email protected]

Think for Thyself

AUtUMN iS UpON US and signs of the season are abundant. The days are growing shorter, the cooling air smells light and crisp, kids bundled in jackets are seen

boarding yellow school buses, and this year, election signs are dotting every corner.

A couple weeks ago we received an email from a reader ask-ing us to consider including an article which would address the concerns of conscious voters. He wrote, “I was thinking maybe someone in your circle of writers might have some advice for those of us who want to make a difference and want to vote and don’t want to get sucked into the anger, hate and misinforma-tion. How do we stay centered or “on course” when the rest of the world is becoming so polarized?”

A fabulous question and one certainly worth addressing. I’m asking all our readers to weigh in on the topic. Please email [email protected] with your thoughts and we’ll post some of the responses we receive in the NovDec issue which will hit stands on November 1st just prior to the election on Tuesday, November 6th.

As I ponder this dilemma for myself, I find relevant a recent topic discussed on Open-Line Tuesday during the weekly radio

show I host. I posed the question, “What are the truths you hold to be self-evident?” Listeners called to share their answers and we enjoyed a lively discussion on the importance of critical think-ing and running beliefs through a personal litmus test before accepting them as true or not.

Anthony Balderrama authored an article for CareerBuilder.com titled “What They Should Have Taught You in School.” His list included practical skills used in everyday life such as communication skills (small talk, reading between the lines, and listening), personal development (coping with change, time management, defining success, achieving balance, and in-dependent problem solving) and interacting with others (how to ask for what you want, benefits of a positive attitude, and ex-pressing gratitude). I would add to his list critical thinking. The power of thinking for oneself should not be underestimated.

I like to believe that only voters who have thought long and hard about their decisions will contribute to the fate of our country at the polls this fall, but the only person I can control is myself. Let’s explore together, I look forward to hearing from you. Happy Autumn!

Spiritual SpOtlightCINCINNATI SpIRITuAL CINEMA CIRCLE

Many visionary, inspirational films are made every year but never get into the theaters. Spiritual Cinema Circle, started by Steven Simon, pro-ducer of “What Dreams May Come” and other spiritually inspired films, was created to ensure these films are seen. Each month Simon selects and distributes independently made films, thus supporting the filmmakers and spreading powerful ideas that can enlighten, empower and generally raise one’s consciousness. One doesn’t have to be a film buff to be moved by a film about joy, loss, fear, persistence, or peace. But when one is so moved, he or she has an opportunity to approach life from a slightly different an-gle. And he or she usually ends up telling someone about the insight they gained, in the hopes that their community will move towards the higher and deeper consciousness he or she experienced. The Cincinnati Spiritual Cinema Circle is a means for those in the Cincinnati area to do just that – to join with others in experiencing a new view of life, and then take the les-sons into the community.

Everyone is invited to come see the film, with a new one presented each month, and join the discussion that follows. Those who are attracted to deeper involvement, are encouraged to take part in the Cincinnati Spiritual Cinema Circle’s experiment in community building. The Circle will sup-port each other in taking action that apply the lessons the films reveal.

The Circle meets once a month at the Glendale New Church (845 Con-gress Ave, Glendale, OH 45246), on the 2nd Sunday of the month, 5–7pm. The only cost is a freewill donation. http://cincyspiritcinemacircle.blogspot.com/.

AS A cArDiOLOgiSt for over a quarter century, I dealt with life and death circumstances on a daily basis. I came to fully appreciate how precious and tenuous life

can be; it can change in an instant. On June 30th of 2009 such a dramatic shift occurred in our family when our son, Tyler, was involved in an automobile accident sustaining a severe spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed.

As John Lennon once said, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” In a nano-second, our entire family was thrust into the midst of one of the fiercest storms imaginable.

Why do disruptive, terrible things like this happen? Why must there be such anguish? Does it serve any purpose? These were questions that had answers . . . but it would take quite some time for me to sift through the quagmire in order to un-cover them.

There were three things that helped me navigate the storm:

1. Journaling became the vehicle of my delivery from the abyss. After the accident occurred I initially found it extremely difficult to talk about. I needed the time in order to allow the experience to be absorbed into the deepest recesses of my soul, where it would be pondered over and over again. It would be in that silent space that I began my search for meaning. Journaling allowed me to distill my ideas down to the most elemental level, then to expand on them, exploring places deep within that I had never before recognized. It provided me with incredible clarity in the midst of the chaos I was experiencing.

2. yielding to a higher power offered me the strength to endure the ravaging storm. Letting go of my false egoic belief that I must handle this alone enabled me to find an unfathomable peace within the quagmire. Ultimately I came to see, to truly visualize the beauty that hid within the belly of the beast. On this path through hell, my mantra became: “I can’t but we can!”

3. Changing the thought made all the difference. As Dr. Wayne Dyer says: “When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” I came to understand that that everything is in perfect order . . . even this. It’s all in one’s perspective. Even in the midst of such profound sadness, I found that if I allowed myself to look around, I could focus instead on the beauty be-fore my eyes; it was there right alongside the suffering. There must be this maintenance of equilibrium in our lives, a balance that is manifested in the apparent dualities of life. After all, the monsoon is countered by a calm, sunny day; perfect health is balanced by life-threatening disease or injury, good by evil, and darkness by illumination. These perceived opposites are in truth conjoined with one another.

What I ultimately came to appreciate was that this human realm represents a perfect circumstance in which one can ap-proach transformative enlightenment. I have learned that all the pain and turmoil of this existence, those things that cause us to suffer, are beautifully balanced and coupled with those things that bring us pleasure. It is because of that symbiotic relation-ship that we do not become overly burdened with the negative aspects of any experience.

Through this heart wrenching experience, I have learned that when adversity comes our way, it is how we respond to that difficulty that determines who we become. Note: Tara L. Robinson will interview Dr. Gordon Tuesday, Sept. 4, 3:30-4:30pm on WAIF Cincinnati 88.3FM or www.waif883.org.

DESpitE ALL thE advantages of technology, we are too of-ten living in a mentally created

world. In our busy lives, our thinking minds are filled with ruminations about the past, or worries about the future. More and more, people are rediscover-ing the value of ancient practices like mindfulness, which helps us to tune into what is happening right now, in this very moment. Author Jon Kabat-Zinn defines mindfulness as “the awareness that emerges through paying attention on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally to the unfolding of ex-perience moment to moment.”

You can directly experience mindful-ness, even right now. As you are reading this, pay attention to your physical body. Most people only notice what they are feeling physically at certain moments, like when they are in pain, or when they are experiencing a particularly pleasur-able sensation. Except for those prac-ticing such things as dance, yoga, or martial arts, most of us tend to ignore the continuous signals our bodies send us. So right now, see if you can sense a particular part of your body, such as the right toe. Do you notice any sensations of pain, any tingling, any warmth, any

moisture, any numbness? Is your foot making contact with a sock, shoe, or the floor? Notice if you are making any judgments or thoughts about what you are experiencing, and bring your aware-ness back to noticing just what is there, as best you can. You can shift this type of attention to any point in your body or do a quick scan of the entire body to see what you notice. Eventually, you can learn to hold an awareness of your entire body at the same time, rather than look-ing at it piece by piece.

Next, see if you can shift your aware-ness to any type of feelings or emotions that are present. Are you feeling a little happy, do you feel a sense of stress, feel any sadness, any sense of boredom, any excitement, or are you not noticing any particular emotion? Many people only notice their feelings when they are par-ticularly strong, not realizing that emo-tions come and go continuously through-out any given day, any given hour, any given moment. One way of preventing problems is to notice emotions as they rise and fall, rather than pushing down negative feelings until they become overwhelming.

Lastly, even right now in this mo-ment, can you notice your own thoughts? Often we identify ourselves with our thoughts, so this may be more subtle and difficult to observe, but can you de-tect what thoughts are present in your mind? (If you have the thought that you are not thinking right now, that itself is a thought.) As you gain practice in this, you will begin to notice that you rarely

have complete thoughts. Most people do not talk to themselves in complete dialogues. Thoughts come and go in bits and pieces, sometimes in images and im-pressions. However, all of these thoughts have an impact on your feelings, and even on your physical body, which may show up as a tendency to hold tension in certain areas.

By paying attention moment to mo-ment, we break through the automatic pi-lot mode we so often live in. By noticing our sensations, feelings, and thoughts, we allow ourselves more space to work wisely with them. While mindfulness is simple, it can also be quite subtle, and not necessarily easy. It takes practice to be able to sustain this type of attention, and to engage it even in difficult situa-tions. However, it also allows us to be more fully present to enjoy the beauty in each moment as well.

Note: Tara L. Robinson will interview Dr. Richard Sears Tuesday, October 9, 3:30-4:30pm on WAIF Cincinnati 88.3FM or www.waif883.org.

About the author: Richard Sears, PsyD, MBA, ABPP, is a li-censed psychologist in private practice and core faculty at Union Institute & University. He is author of Mindfulness in Clinical Practice and runs mindfulness groups at the Alliance Institute for Integrative Medicine. www.psych-insights.com.

i LOvE it WhEN Sianna Sherman comes to town. She is my favorite traveling yoga teacher. I consciously save money to take her classes and rearrange anything short of a wedding

or a funeral to make sure I can attend. The mental preparation is as important as the physical, but somehow I was mentally unprepared for the classes I took during her February visit to Shine Yoga Studio in Hyde Park.

I showed up to class, new mat in hand, ready to learn so I could pass the wisdom on to my students. The classes were packed. There were two additional dedicated teachers there to help adjust the numerous students. The first afternoon was de-voted to therapeutics. We worked with partners, each giving and receiving guidance and therapy. I enjoyed working with my new friend, learning many different ways to help my students and clients release the tensions within the body. Our teacher called it “clearing,” which was familiar because we talk about clearing blocks in reiki, the hands-on healing technique I practice.

On the way home, I realized something embarrassing. One of the teachers who had been adjusting posture had really got on my nerves. I had even told her “I can’t” twice, but I hadn’t noticed it at the time. There is no “I can’t” in my vocabulary! Or maybe there is, but it’s not something I want in there. I didn’t want to miss the next class, but the teacher would be there again so I needed to figure something out to fix my issue.

In any relationship there are two or more people. Unfortu-nately the only one I can fix is me. Wouldn’t it be great if every-one else would just accommodate me? Not gonna happen. As I started to ruminate on the problem, I just couldn’t get a handle on what was going on. In a blinding flash of the obvious, I real-ized I didn’t have to.

This is one of the true gifts of reiki. In reiki we are taught to use the universal life force energy that is all around us. We can use the energy to heal body and mind. But my favorite part is that there is no diagnosing. There is no need to figure things out. Just send reiki to “whatever is the cause of the behavior I don’t like (insert the name here).” So, I spent some time Friday night, then Saturday on the ride back to the studio, sending reiki to whatever was blocking my reception of her gift of teaching.

The transformation was nothing short of miraculous. What a great class. My body has had many falls and minor car ac-cidents. This makes it hard to find the yoga motions within my own body, even though I can see and find them easily in others when I teach. Now I have a template within my body for the actions I create in others. There was so much energy moving in my body, I had a hard time speaking for several days after class. My thanks to my guides and all the experiences that brought me here.

About the author: Pam Doremus is a Usui Reiki Master. She compliments reiki with biogenesis tools and Hannah Kroeger tech-niques. The underlying principle of reiki is to help people heal by clearing energy blocks throughout the body that limit health, clear thinking and creativity. Since life is a process of learning and growing, her goal is to help each client find inner peace and healing, drawn from their own life experiences. 859.750.4720 www.nkyreiki.com. Don’t Guess. Assess.by Kristy hayes, rN

DO YOU KNOW what is going on inside your body? Based on the immune system you inherited from your parents, you’ve been equipped to fight disease and aging

with a natural antioxidant called superoxide dismutase. But for many of us, it’s not enough. That’s why we need new antioxidant formulas in our daily regimens to compensate for any deficiency. Antioxidants fight the free radicals that can rob us of a long life.

So, why and how are free radicals formed in the first place? The by-product of energy use is oxidation. Our normal meta-bolic processes and exposure to the environment creates free radicals through oxidation. Everything we do, each breath, each meal, even the sun causes oxidation within our bodies. Oxidation causes free radical formation, in the same way a car will oxidize and rust when exposed to the elements. Instead of rust, we ex-perience deterioration of our bones, joints and connective tissue, our organs wear out and our immune system breaks down. It’s harder to fight off disease and all the visible effects of the aging process.

Unless cells are repaired as quickly as they are damaged, the body accumulates more damage than it can repair, and critical cell damage can begin to occur.

What’s the solution? Personalized nutrition, made for each individual person with all natural ingredients, based on his or her DNA. And now, after over 15 years of research and de-velopment, science can provide us with DNA-guided products made specifically for our individual needs.

if i ASKED YOU whether or not you brushed and flossed your teeth, you might think it an odd question. I mean, ev-eryone knows that brushing and flossing are necessary to

keep teeth healthy. In fact, studies have shown that up to 94% of people state that they brush their teeth regularly. As a society, we have been taught that regular up-keep of our body is essen-tial for good health. We schedule mammograms, colonoscopies and other regular check-ups with our medical doctor. We have been taught that we should exercise regularly and eat healthy foods. We are also told to see our dentist for yearly check-ups. We do all of this because we know that prevention is the key to living a long vibrant life. However, if I asked about spinal hygiene I would most likely get a confused look from most people. Unfortunately, the care and maintenance of our spine is not something that our society teaches as part of this concept of preventative health. Why is maintaining the health of your spine so incredibly important?

The simple answer is that the spine protects the health of the nervous system. The spinal cord and the nerve roots that exit from it are both housed and protected by the spinal column. Distortions in the alignment of the vertebra of the spine can cre-ate interference to the functioning of the nervous system, which can present as back and neck pain, headaches, muscle fatigue and weakness and much more. These misalignments of the ver-tebra over time lead to degeneration and deterioration of the spinal column and, just like teeth, the spine is supposed to be in a particular alignment. The big difference between maintaining the health of your teeth and maintaining the health of your spine is that if your teeth fall apart you can get dentures and never miss a bite; if your spine falls apart your entire health can be af-fected and there is no spinal replacement to keep you going.

In 1921, a medical doctor named Winsor set out to prove that chiropractic practice was based on false ideas. What he dis-covered, however, validated everything chiropractors had been

talking about for decades. According to Dr. Winsor, “The ob-ject of these necropsies [dissections] was to determine whether any connection existed between abnormal curvatures of the spine, and diseased organs; or whether the two were entirely independent of each other.” Dr. Winsor dissected 75 human and 22 cat cadavers. What he found was a nearly 100% correlation between distortions of the spine and diseased organs. In other words, wherever he found problems in the spine, the nerves that exited that problem area lead directly to diseased internal organs.Need more reasons to take care of the health of your spine?

Dr. Roger Sperry, 1981 Nobel Prize winner for brain re-search states, “Movement of the joints of the spine is analo-gous to a windmill generating electricity to run a power plant. Therefore, the more mechanically distorted a person becomes, the less energy there is for healing, metabolism and thinking.” More misalignments in the spine equal lesser quality of life, less vitality, and overall less potential for living the best life possible.

Just as a dentist can see the effects of teeth that have not been taken care of properly, so, too, can a chiropractor see the effects of a spine that has been neglected. Over the past 12 years I have seen literally thousands of people who are suffering from not properly taking care of their spines. This is extremely unfortu-nate as it is preventable through proper spinal hygiene. Normal spinal curves and alignment can be maintained through specific exercises and stretches. These stretches and exercises can be performed in ten minutes a day and can give you a spine that can weather the storms of life. It is important to note that while these exercises and stretches are excellent for maintaining the health of your spine, just as brushing your teeth will not repair a cavity, neither will these exercises repair long standing damage to your spinal column. This is where a chiropractor comes into play. A chiropractor’s role is to fix the misalignments so that you can function at your highest potential. Once the chiroprac-tor creates a healthy spine, maintaining it in that state becomes much easier.

GreeNs Are GooD

grEENS cOME iN MANY fOrMS, both the kind you cook and those best eaten raw. We love them all, and have become especially enamored with the darker

greens that taste great when steamed, sautéed or braised. But most Americans shy away from virtually every green thing ex-cept basic, iceberg lettuce, and that’s a shame, given not only the nutritional benefits of these foods but also their ready avail-ability, modest caloric count and low cost.

What makes dark, leafy greens so good for us? Short an-swer: they are loaded with vitamins and minerals. According to nutritionist Laura Dolson, writing on About.com, “Dark green leafy vegetables are, calorie for calorie, probably the most con-centrated source of nutrition of any food.” They are loaded with

flavonoids, carotenoids and other antioxidants – meaning that they contain powerful protection against many forms of cancer, including breast, skin and stomach. They have substances that help keep our eyes healthy and ward off macular degeneration and are rich in magnesium, iron and calcium. Dolson believes that their greatest benefit may be in their abundance of Vitamin K, which protects against osteoporosis, artery deterioration and arthritis, among others.

We should be eating these foods several times a week. Try the following recipe for braised greens, which makes enough to keep leftovers in the fridge so that you can chow down on this good stuff all week.

recipe: Braised southern Greens(Serves 8)

ingredients:2 t olive or canola oil2 c finely chopped aromatic vegetables (a mix of onion, celery, carrots and bell peppers)1-2 t minced garlic1 10-12-oz package sliced mushrooms11/2 c broth (chicken or vegetable)1 lb. rinsed, chopped Southern greens (collard, mustard, turnip) ¼ c balsamic vinegarSalt and pepper, to taste2 T toasted nuts (such as pine nuts, almonds or pumpkin seeds, or a mix)Shredded mozzarella cheese, to taste (optional)

instructions:heat oil in a large, deep bottomed skillet over medium heat. Add vegetables and stir well. cover, reduce heat to low and cook until vegetables soften, about 3-4 minutes. Uncover and stir in garlic, then add mushrooms. Add a little broth if the pan seems too dry. cover again and let mushrooms soften, about 3-4 minutes.increase heat to medium, uncover and add the rest of the broth and one-

third of the greens along with salt and pepper. Keep adding greens a little at a time while their volume reduces. Once all the greens are in the pan, cover and cook on low for 25-30 minutes, until the greens are tender. remove from heat, adjust seasonings as needed, and stir in vinegar. Ladle into a serving bowl, sprinkle with nuts and (if using) cheese.

Literally translated as ‘my little cabbage,’ this en-dearing French term inspires chuckles in aspiring lan-guage scholars. In addition to the smiles, this humble leafy vegetable has remarkably few calories consider-ing its richness in other nutrients. Cabbage has lots of Vitamins B, K and C, and surprising levels of alpha-linoleic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid. The fiber in the plant helps reduce cholesterol by binding bile acids in the gut. Lightly cooking the vegetable improves the bioavailability of the fiber. However, if cabbage is overcooked, the fiber is degraded and this benefit is dramatically reduced.

Cabbage, another leafy green, is a great source of antioxidants, including polyphenols and isothiocya-nates. The latter are largely responsible for the impres-sive reduction in cancer risk that comes with cabbage consumption. These beneficial compounds are better preserved if cabbage is consumed raw, or only lightly cooked.

We have included a tasty cole slaw recipe in this issue. The addition of the marinated baked tofu makes this a one-dish meal!

EvErYthiNg YOU WANt tO KNOW about your life, body, soul, relationships – all of it can be deeply explored: How do I change negative thought patterns or

self-sabotaging behaviors? What’s my life’s purpose? How do I heal this problem? What’s the root of this illness? Should I stay in or leave this job/relationship/home/group/project, and why? These are specific questions I’ve heard asked of the Records whose answers generated profoundly positive changes.

The Akashic Records, another name for the field of con-sciousness flowing through all life forms and being imprinted by everything that occurs, contain answers to any question. They also offer unconditional love and spiritual renewal. It’s like the DNA of the universe, plus each soul’s journey – every thought, word, feeling, action and interaction is imprinted for all time. Every soul has its own record; there are also collective records for all souls, groups, cultures, organizations, and every global or cosmic event throughout time.

Last spring, I wrote about kinesiology (muscle testing) for Whole Living Journal (“Knowing the Truth is Easy” MarApr ‘12), explaining how the field of consciousness surrounding each liv-ing thing holds an imprint of every experience throughout its existence. That field can be accessed to discover the truth about anything. Using kinesiology, both the question and questioner must embody integrity and only “yes or no” answers are avail-able. It is this same field of consciousness that has traditionally been referred to as the Akashic Records.

Most spiritual traditions refer to this omnipresent field of consciousness. The Old Testament calls it The Book of Life that holds an account of all our deeds. Jesus spoke of it when declar-ing that everything, down to the hairs on your head, are counted and known forever. The Records were first mentioned in an-cient Hindu philosophy and Akasha is a Sanskrit word meaning “the energetic substance from which all life is formed.” Those exploring this dimension, either accidentally or deliberately, perceived it as holding the complete record of a soul’s experi-ence, thus the name “Akashic Records.”

Reading the Records is both easier and more difficult than using kinesiology. Easier because questions are not limited to yes/no answers and much relevant information is usually given - and when you open the Records, or someone opens them for you, Grace is immediately bestowed. Overall purpose and life patterns – within an individual or group – can easily be ex-

plored. One may also ask any type of question without regard for the protocols so vital in kinesiology.

One way that reading the Akashic Records proves more difficult than kinesiology is paying for classes to learn how – first for yourself, and then for others if desired. Anyone who is able and willing to know the truth and ask questions appro-priately can learn kinesiology – no cost involved. When yes or no answers are what you’re looking for, it is much faster. Ei-ther requires willingness to know the truth with no attachment to particular answers. To access truth instead of subconscious programming also requires devotional practice to remain both confident and humble enough to do it well.

Numerous avenues exist for learning to read your own Re-cords. Many claim the ability to read them for you. I would per-sonally use kinesiology, or ask someone who does it if I didn’t know how, to test the integrity, clarity, and compassion of the reader, teacher, and method. To be trusting of goodness raises our vibration; to be gullible lowers our energy level and can be costly in terms of time, money, and serenity.

When genuinely in the Records, we can quickly identify and potentially release anything that blocks forward movement. We can discover how to finally relieve our suffering, let go what doesn’t work, embrace joy, vitality, and peacefulness in mind, body, and spirit. Loving guidance and healing grace flow freely through this eternal field of consciousness.

Allowing your Records to be opened offers an opportunity to have your most pressing questions lovingly answered. They give you the big picture, along with any needed details, to make sense of confusing or overwhelming issues. No longer must hu-mans remain in the dark, vainly wishing for help or healing. The eternal field of consciousness in which you live, also called the Akashic Records, holds all the answers, awaiting only your questions.

Herbs ‘n Such, by Mimi Tagher

MAgNESiUM iS AN ESSENtiAL MiNErAL for staying healthy and is required for more than 300 bio-chemical reactions in the body. Roughly 50% of total

body magnesium is stored in our bones. The remaining part is predominantly found in the cells of body tissues and organs. Though only 1% of magnesium is available in the blood, the human body strives to keep the levels constant to maintain a state of balance.

Magnesium's impact on the body is crucial and far reaching. Magnesium aids in the absorption of calcium; it is needed for the transmission of nerve impulses; it is necessary for muscle function; it aids in body temperature regulation, rhythmical heart beat, detoxification, energy production, and the formation of healthy bones and teeth. Other health benefits of magnesium include protein synthesis, relief from bronchospasm, and im-provement of parathyroid function. It boosts the bio-availability of vitamin B6 and cholesterol, improves muscle functioning, and helps prevent osteoporosis, insomnia, constipation, heart attacks, hypertension, constipation, migraines, premenstrual syndrome, menopausal symptoms, kidney stones and gall-stones, to name just a few.

Roughly 70 percent of all Americans do not consume the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of magnesium. RDA is 420 mg for adult males and 320 mg for adult females. Remem-ber, the RDA is intended to make sure the American population gets “the bare minimum” in nutrition to avoid such diseases as rickets, scurvy, anemia, and beriberi; it is NOT about achiev-ing optimal health. Good dietary sources of magnesium include kelp, wild rice, rye, nuts, whole grains, wheat germ, tofu, and green leafy vegetables.

The Standard American Diet (SAD) of meat, potatoes, re-fined grains and sugars has resulted in an epidemic of nutrition-al deficiency, obesity and chronic illness. Even those who eat organic, whole foods are in danger of deficiency because of the depletion of minerals in the soil. In other words, it is very diffi-cult to get enough magnesium from our food alone. Carbonated beverages, sugar, coffee, caffeinated drinks, alcoholic bever-ages, and stress all contribute to depleting the magnesium level in the body. Some medications such as diuretics, birth control pills, estrogen replacements, and heart and asthma medication can also affect magnesium levels, so check with your health care provider to see if supplementation would be beneficial for you.

i YAM WhAt i YAM,” says Popeye the Sailor Man of com-ics and movie fame. Who would have thought he was such a realist and forward thinking guy? He was truly ahead of

his time. Popeye realized that there’s no time like the present. He chose to live in the moment and be true to himself and his beliefs. We can all learn from that.

Today, there is a big push to get back to this “I am” concept and to once again live in the present. What was done in the past is over. It can’t be changed. Instead of worrying about it, we can note the lesson learned and apply it to our current situ-ation. The goal is to live each moment to the fullest and enjoy the process.

In today’s world, we have all kinds of tools, such as calen-dars and schedulers that sync to our iPhones, tablets and all our other electronic devices and programs which help anticipate the probability of future situations. But what good will these tools do if we don’t take care of the present situation?

A traditional Reiki precept seems to capture the right idea – “Just for today, I will…” Alcoholics Anonymous’ 12-step pro-gram suggests a similar approach to handle life’s issues. Some-times we feel overwhelmed when we look at the big picture and our perception of what the future holds for us. It is much easier and manageable to break it up into smaller daily pieces, and just get through this day first. Then the next one and the next.

So how do we do that? How do we stay in the present mo-ment? Well…it’s a brain issue so we need to find a way to shift the focus. When you begin to build a worst case scenario for something going on tomorrow, or next week, or just create a cascade of overwhelming thoughts, consciously put another picture in your mind. See the trip you and the kids took to Wash-ington Park to play in the water. Breathe it in and feel the fun.

Then get back to the task at hand. Not the entire event you’ve volunteered to organize for your church, but just the right-this-minute task of figuring out the timeline for that day, so other volunteers can start working on their assignments. Fol-low this with a small pat on the back for yourself, and maybe a cupcake to celebrate.

Putting things in perspective can help, too. Looking at the night sky has a way of reminding us that the universe is work-ing, without us being responsible for it.

Choose the joy in this present moment, not the misery. So the dishwasher has decided to malfunction. But the lights are on and the air conditioning is running. Your heart can fill with gratitude for all the beauty in your life. Right now is actually pretty great!

Laughter yoga is a mind-body exer-cise which counteracts the negative ef-fects of stress by combining simulated laughter exercises with yoga breathing. Science has determined that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter; the same physiological and psychological benefits are experi-enced either way. Laughter yoga lifts the spirit, oxygenates the body, strengthens the immune system, reduces blood pres-sure, improves attitude and behavior, and helps create peace within oneself and the world.

Local laughter yoga instructor, Judi Winall, received a call from Katie Bauer who was working on a documentary for a PBS NOVA Science Now show with the theme, “What Makes Us Human.”

The show’s focus is on the evolution of language, Neanderthal and laughter. Katie and Judi enjoyed a long, laughter-filled conversation about laughter yoga and the question arose about coming to Cincinnati to film Judi’s Laughter Yoga class. Judi enthusiastically said, “Yes!” and the excitement grew as the date of the filming got closer.

In April of this year the production company arrived at the Sharonville Li-brary to film the Joyful Healing Laughter Yoga Club. Everyone participating was excited and came wearing their play-ful, colorful socks, which is encouraged in this LY club. Throughout the filming everyone was affected by the contagious laughter, even the film crew. The show will air in October 2012. The date and

time will be posted at www.joyfulheal-inglaughter.com as soon as PBS releases this information.

Judi’s LY club meets at 7pm on the second Wednesday of every month at the Sharonville library. She also of-fers trainings and LY presentations. For more information please contact Judi at 513.899.3115 or [email protected].

Vitamin Moonby veronica farren

Through legend and lore, the full moon has long been regarded as a pow-erful and potent stimulus. The English adjective pertaining to the moon is lunar, derived from the Latin Luna. So it’s no coincidence that the term lunacy, which implies wild foolishness and folly, is de-rived from the intermittent insanity that is believed to be related to particular lunar phases. In some Middle Eastern countries, it is said that judges tend to be more forgiving of criminals who have committed crimes during the period of a full moon. In a similar way, parents keep special watch for their children’s seem-ingly inevitable mischievous cavorting, and commuters prepare for the uncanny bouts of road rage that rise significantly on these specific days. Though the pecu-liar qualities of a full moon are widely agreed upon, the reasons behind the strange phenomenon and its technical validity cause a confusing debate.

The powerful tidal pull that the moon exhibits on the vast waters of the earth is considered when contemplating the notoriously bizarre happenings that oc-cur during its full state. More than half of a human being’s biological makeup is comprised of water. The great lunar impact on our individual oceans, as the theory goes, would have a considerably different pattern when the governing moon is full. Unusual monthly occur-rences have also been attributed to the high atmospherical concentration of pos-itive ions associated with the full moon. An imbalance of this sort can potentially constitute for hormonal shifts that easily cause temporary phases of depression, lethargy, violent tendencies, tension, stress, and anger; all symptoms that have been easily identifiable during the full moon throughout history. Bodies with the ability to produce enough adrenaline to compensate for the over-abundance of these ominous ions might experience hyperactivity and slight madness, also notable indications that the lunar orbit is at its pinnacle of eccentricity.

Despite the captivating mythology and mystifying beauty of the lunar sphere, studies have failed to find scientific evidence to prove its influence over the behavior of civilization. Nevertheless, our sky is dominated by both a sun and a moon, two celestial bodies that indisputably guide our sleeping patterns, har-vest, work schedules, and moods. Whether a product of fairy tales or chemical shifts, when the night sky is illuminated by the wise old man in a way that can only been seen once a month, something magical and spiritual clicks inside of me. I call it vitamin moon. I take a long, introspective walk underneath each waxing gibbous as it completes itself, soak in the atmosphere’s uniquely captivat-ing energies, and go to sleep fully charged and equipped for the cycle to come.

Everyone has a story worth sharing...

september and october 2012by Diane Samsel

September 6: Venus in Leo. Social skills put you at the center of attention on the job. The need to

stabilize a project gets a lift from ambitious, innovative thinking and communication. September 8: Fourth Quarter Moon. Reboot a project by helping to resolve someone’s emotional block. A member of the team has likely come up with one idea too many. Success comes through the hard work of finding the right idea and working on the details. Remember to take frequent breaks though. September 15: New Moon. An explosive idea could emerge today. Trust a friend’s suggestion; it could lead to an important breakthrough for success. September 16: Mercury in Libra. Those closest to you have important new ideas to communicate. One problem: Their ambitions for the future could be too fantastic. Planning is every-thing; frustrations arise without it. September 18: Pluto Direct. There’s a tremendous thrust for going forward with projects. Sudden insights clear obstacles from the path and your leadership skills emerge with gusto. People will follow your lead. Words are all you need.September 22: Sun in Libra and First Quarter Moon. Manners help navigate a challenging social situation. People with strong emotional charges come at you from all angles. Best way to avoid the trap of overreacting is to bend a bit to their will. This avoids the conflict. Although you feel a need to be right, diplo-macy is the only tool that will work. Be a people manager today.September 29: Full Moon. Leadership qualities command the day as sudden developments set off a mini revolution. Ev-eryone is excited and relationships become passionate. Fuses are short. Risks are attractive. The mind is a solid ally—conservative thinking and communication will preserve order and balance.October 3: Venus in Virgo. The need for personal security with-in relationships can be addressed with clarifying insight. A much-needed breakthrough pleases all and upholds an important ideal.October 4: Jupiter Retrograde. It’s back to the drawing board to work out some glitches. It’s clear that success is around the corner but not quite in hand. Some serious thinking could inspire a higher vision for the project. October 5: Mercury in Scorpio and Saturn in Scorpio. The revolution gets two powerful allies with these planets entering Scorpio. The mind is able to grasp very deep and intense ideas and concepts that, combined with hard work, will bring about important changes in the next few years. There’s a relentless drive to become the person you want to be. Risks are necessary but use caution and planning in the execution. Sudden and dramatic changes are possible.

October 6: Mars in Scorpio. Social gatherings are best when the purpose is to give shape to a dream. People are ready to give of themselves on all levels. Clarifying what is expected yields magnificent results.October 8: Fourth Quarter Moon. We’re still hard at work planning to bring the dream into reality. All goes well with relationships--people will be generally in a good mood. Pleasing and caring abound in the community.October 15: New Moon. People feel the need to assert them-selves in the pursuit of a new idea. Tantrums could arise from power struggles. Go with the flow because passions will cool soon enough. Then you can work out differences in perspective.October 21: First Quarter Moon. Something overlooked needs attention. All goes well, though, as channels of communi-cation support an important change that was probably why you overlooked the thing in the first place. Everything flows smoothly and cooperation abounds.October 22: Sun in Scorpio. Energy is focused today. Communications are very succinct to the point of overbearing intensity. By setting an example and lending a helping hand, the situation lightens up considerably.October 28: Venus in Libra. Check the facts in all commu-nications. Someone is so determined to be at the front of the line that they could break rules to get there. October 29: Mercury in Sagittarius and Full Moon. A sud-den surge of ambition overwhelms consciousness. A new project needs to embody this new awareness of one’s path. Building towards this transformative vision could require enormous extra effort if your plan is not well conceived.

Book Reviewno storm Last Forever: Transforming suffering Into Insightby Dr. Terry A. Gordon (Hay House, 2012)

As a world–renowned cardiologist and health activist, Dr. Terry Gordon understands that life can change in the blink of an eye. However, nothing could have prepared him for the fateful phone call he received that his son Tyler was involved in a near fatal car accident, sustaining a severe spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed.

Dr. Gordon’s journey resulted in a spiritual awakening and a clearer under-standing of life and the truths it has to offer. This compelling and emotional true story of surviving the fiercest of life’s storm and finding the rainbow through the clouds is documented in his inspiring new memoir.

“It was my dear friend Dr. Wayne Dyer who inspired me to write this book, his unconditional friendship and support has changed my life,” shares Dr. Gor-don. He adds, “Through this heart wrenching experience for myself and my family, I have learned that when adversity comes our way, it is how we respond to that difficulty that determines who we become. Life experiences become ca-lamities only if we make the conscious decision to make tragedies out of them, we have a choice.”

In his new book, Dr. Gordon contends that rather than lamenting so-called adversities in our lives, we can choose to be grateful for them. We can embrace them and accept them as gifts from the Divine. They can provide fertile soil for growth and enlightenment. He offers refreshing insights that can help us realize the “bigger picture” of life; and how a so-called tragedy can actually be a blessing in disguise. Note: Tara L. Robinson will interview Dr. Gordon on Tuesday, Sept. 4th, 3:30-4:30pm on WAIF 88.3FM or www.waif883.org.

CD ReviewCosmic Humby Jonathan Goldman (2012)

What was the sound of creation like? What if this original primordial sound were a hum? What would it feel like to hear that sound? That is a question contemplated by sound healing pioneer Jonathan Goldman and answered with his latest CD. An international authority on the uses of sound and music for health and transformation, he is the creator of numerous cutting edge books and recordings including, The Divine Name, winner of

the 2011 Visionary Award for “Best Alternative Health” book and “2012: Ascension Harmonics,” winner of the 2010 Vision-ary Award for “Best Meditation” recording. Note: Jonathan Goldman will be presenting a workshop and concert on April 12th and 13th, 2013 at St. John's Unitarian Church in Cincinnati. www.healingsounds.com. COMPLETE FAMILY DENTAL CARE

Montgomery Dental Medicine is like no dental office you’ve

visited. Dedicated to your total well-being, our staff forms long-term re-lationships with you and your family built on open, honest dialogue and a thorough knowledge of all the factors that impact everyone’s health.

Our approach is successful because it’s a more sensitive process of listen-ing to your thoughts, questions and concerns.

AN INTEGRATED APPROACHTO BETTER HEALTH

Do you wake up exhausted? Are you fatigued during the day even

though you get a “good night’s sleep”? Do you suffer Insomnia and CFS? Do you wake up with a headache? Do you have head, neck or jaw pain?

For 27 years, Dr. Bosma has enjoyed marked success relieving headaches and migraine symptoms, TMJ pain and dysfunction, stiff and painful neck and shoulder muscles, and an ex-tremely successful natural sinus regi-men to ease nasal breathing effort.

Our integrated approach combines multiple preventative medicine dis-ciplines. Since our healthcare profes-sionals have over 60 years of combined experience, we’re able to exceed your expectations and achieve our goal of improving your quality of life.

BREATHE MORE LIFE INTOYOUR BODY

Snoring and sleep apnea lead to low oxygen levels in the body. In

turn, this leads to physical problems people don’t usually associate with sleep issues. They affect your life at home, on the job, and your relation-ships.

Dr. Bosma helps patients who snore through a unique system of evaluation and treatment called Oral Systemic Balance. Breathe more life into your body! Call us for information or to schedule your sleep evaluation.

TRANSFORM YOUR SMILE

Does your smile make you feel confident and attractive? Or, do

you cringe when you have your photo taken? Have you lived with discol-ored teeth, chips or cracks, or mottled coloring for long enough?

Transform your smile in as few as one or two visits to Montgomery Den-tal Medicine. Find new confidence and take years off your looks!

We’ll repair your older bridgework (cracks, chips and discoloration), and we can close up gaps between teeth. We are committed to making you feel and look your best.

WHY CHOOSE MONTGOMERY DENTAL MEDICINE?

Our practice is different. Yes, you’ll see us for routine check-

ups, cleanings, x-rays, whitening, fillings and, yes, sometimes for seri-ous work. But we also are laying the groundwork for a long-term relation-ship with you and your family—one that will help you all enjoy better health for life. We’re treating you, not just your teeth!

Go south out of Old Montgomery. Cross over Ronald Reagan Hwy. Turn left at 1st light into Montgomery Station Office Condos. Right at 1st stop sign into our lot. Still not sure? Please feel free tocall us for directions. 513-891-5860.
