OLQP MISSION STATEMENT

Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church is dedicated to witness-ing the teachings of Jesus Christ, especially the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 25:31-46. Our mission is to nurture the spirit and to encourage the potential of those we serve through liturgi-cal celebration, educational endeavors and social ministries. The parish will continue to identify with its origin as a Black parish. As a multi-ethnic congregation we will seek to promote racial har-mony and social justice. While our primary focus is within the immediate community, we will also work to provide for the well-being of the downtrodden everywhere. In this we strive for our parish community to be a caring, sharing, and loving family.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!! - OLQP ANNUAL PARISH PICNIC

Sunday, September 16, 1-5 pm, Barcroft Park

APPALACHIA SERVICE TRIP - This Summer, 15 OLQP teens and 6 adult leaders will travel to rural Central Appalachia for one week to repair homes for low-income families. We will be joining with hundreds of teens from around the country with the assistance of the Appalachia Service Project (ASP). WE NEED YOUR HELP! The reality is that mission costs money. We need to raise a sub-stantial amount of money to bring these 21 OLQP teens and adults to Central Appalachia to do this work, and participate in this trans-formative experience. The “144 Wall” at the back of the church is how you can help. 144 is the Biblical number for the fulness of salvation. Each of the 144 envelopes has a dollar amount ranging from $1.00-$144.00. Please select an envelope from the wall on your way into mass and then insert cash or a check equal to the number on the envelope. This allows you to give a small or large amount. Kids and adults are welcome to donate. Then drop the envelope inside the collection basket during mass. If all the enve-lopes are cleared from the wall, we will have the exact amount we need for this week-long mission experience.

THEOLOGY ON TAP – Monday, June 11, 7:00 PM - On Mon-day, June 11, at 7:00 pm, join fellow parishioners for a lively and interesting discussion of topics related to our faith in a relaxed setting at Lost Dog Café (2920 Columbia Pike, Arlington). Free un-derground parking available off Walter Reed Dr., (use steps or ele-vator to exit to Walter Reed Dr., and then walk to Columbia Pike).

OUR TWINNING RELATIONSHIP WITH ST. JOSEPH PARISH In 1995, Pere Daniel Romulus, the first resident priest in Medor, wrote to Theresa Patterson, Director and Co-Founder of the Parish Twinning Program, asking that St. Joseph parish be twinned with a U.S. parish. In 1997, Father Jeff Duaime, the pastor of OLQP at the time, who previously had worked in Haiti, asked our parish to form a Haiti Committee and join the Parish Twinning Program. Knowing the unique challenges in Haiti, Father Jeff asked Theresa Patterson to twin us with a church that other U.S. parishes might consider too difficult to maintain a long-term relationship with. That is how we were twinned with St. Joseph’s, a parish so remote that one must hike or ride a mule for the last six miles in order to get there. Please pray for the success of the 122 students from Medor taking the 9th grade National Exam June 11-13 and the 22 students who will take the Baccalaureate (13th grade) Exam on June 25-28. Check out Dr. Sue's blog on Medor at marysusancarlson.tumblr.com

Please continue to pray for our sisters and brothers in Haiti.

FATIMA-SPAIN-LOURDES-PARIS PILGRIMAGE

September 25-October 5, 2018 Father Peter and Deacon LaDuca (Holy Spirit Parish, Annandale) invite OLQP members on an amazing journey of faith to visit Fati-ma, Portugal, home to the 100-year-old apparition of Mary. Then experience the City of Salamanca in the beautiful country of Spain with a visit to Avila, in the footsteps of St. Teresa. Finally, reaching Lourdes, France where Our Lady appeared to St. Bernadette. Lourdes is the true place of healing and miracles. Followed by two days/nights in Paris to visit Notre Dame and St. Catherine Laboure (Miraculous Medal). See this special webpage for information on costs: www.JMJTours.com/HolySpirit

JUST A THOUGHT OR TWO… In this Sunday’s Gospel we hear that Jesus’ family come looking for him, and it would seem that they are concerned about his mental health while scribes accuse him of being possessed by the devil! It is common technique of Mark to “sandwich” two stories or events in the telling of an event in the life of Jesus. There are often multiple things going on around Jesus in Mark’s Gospel -- Jesus is always presented as har-ried and hurried, moving from place to place at breakneck speed, leaving the reader almost breathless. Jesus is so bound up in preaching the Reign of God, in healing the sick, in reaching out to the poor and the marginalized, in making the sinner and the out-cast know that they are the beloved of God that even his own family wonders if he has “lost his mind”! And yet he preaches with such authority that the people’s hearts are transformed and some come to believe in him as the Messiah, the long awaited One! But others refuse to see the signs and wonders, their eyes and hearts closed to the living grace of God that stood before them. And Jesus proclaims that “his family” was made up of all those who do the will of God! In the first reading from Genesis, we have the story of the origin of sin. And as misogynistic as this story can be, almost all cultures have stories that seek to explain how sin and evil got into the world. Handed down from one gen-eration to the next these stories were meant to help explain the human condition, to tell us something about God and our rela-tionship to God and how we’ve ended up where we are to-day. The story of the apple is a story of scapegoating, blaming the other for our own poor choices or inaction. We see it all the time in our politicians, they scapegoat “the other party” and/or blame it on “the devil”. The lack of ability to take responsibility for one’s actions and decisions is truly a sign of our times. But following Jesus’ example is the cure for our times! Opening up our eyes and our hearts to his presence in our midst, in our lives, has the ability to transform us just as it did his first disci-ples. Where do I see Jesus in my life? What action is my faith calling me to today? Am I worried about what others might think about me as I live out my faith and proclaim the Gospel through my words and actions? Blessings, Fr. Tim
