What on earth is a wiki?
![Page 3: Who wants to wiki](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b17ed34a7959a2208b4584/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Simply put, it is a web-based collaboration tool.
![Page 4: Who wants to wiki](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b17ed34a7959a2208b4584/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Users may . . . “add content to a webpage on the fly,
generally with little or no knowledge of html coding
required” (Achterman).
![Page 5: Who wants to wiki](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b17ed34a7959a2208b4584/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
You use an editing tool resembling most word
processing applications.Note the familiar features here.
![Page 6: Who wants to wiki](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b17ed34a7959a2208b4584/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
What resources are available to students and educators on a
wiki?
![Page 7: Who wants to wiki](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b17ed34a7959a2208b4584/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Privacy options: a wiki may be either public or private, requiring a password for
access.
![Page 8: Who wants to wiki](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b17ed34a7959a2208b4584/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
The teacher/author may provide syllabi or a project schedule users may access.
![Page 9: Who wants to wiki](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b17ed34a7959a2208b4584/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
One way to accomplish this is found at Erik Myers’s wiki for photography education.

![Page 10: Who wants to wiki](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b17ed34a7959a2208b4584/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Spaces may be created for individual and group use.
![Page 11: Who wants to wiki](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b17ed34a7959a2208b4584/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Science class research, analysis of literature, studies of the environment, and research
of cultures in geography or foreign language classes, are a
few examples.

The teacher and students may also dialogue about choices and topics relating to their
research using the “Discussion” or “Comments”
page.

Students may also be led through a wiki creation process of their own, as Jennifer Hunt and company have done.

Concerns and Considerations
![Page 15: Who wants to wiki](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b17ed34a7959a2208b4584/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Students will require structure and scaffolding (Achterman);
do not let them jump in without a lifejacket.
![Page 16: Who wants to wiki](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b17ed34a7959a2208b4584/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
What if a change made by a student is a problem?
![Page 17: Who wants to wiki](https://reader035.vdocuments.us/reader035/viewer/2022081414/54b17ed34a7959a2208b4584/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
The teacher can easily restore an earlier version of the page.
