'I certainly don't want. to costtaxpayers money for the construction of the·highway, but if you'retalking about a $160,000 saving on300,000 tons of material, you'retalking 50 cents a ton and that'snot very much savings in myopinion. The Smokey Bear Renger District of the Lincoln Nationil Forestis considering re-opening the DevilsCanyon gravel pit.

Not all citizens are in favor ofthe opening the pit, located about14 miles northeast of Ruidoso, andthe forest service is seeking publiccomment.

According to a news release, thepit will be opened at the reqUest ofthe New Mexico State Highway andTransportation Department.

James Yarbrough, field exploratory and testing section, said a

I sampling of material found in thepit was of a quality that would allow the use of Devils Canyon sitefor all surfacing. '

The proposal would extract200,000-300,000 tons ofgravel to beused on at least three highwayprojects near Ruidoso. The stateestimates a saving of $100,000$150,000 by using the pit.

''This represents a significantsavings of tax monies and iscertainly to the advantage of thetaxpayer," Yarbrough wrote in arelease to the forest service.
