August 2018 We have much to celebrate at API this month! The final numbers are in from our recent matching gift fundraising campaign and thanks to the very generous support of our donors, API not only met our fundraising goal of $10,000, we exceeded it by $5,000, raising a total of $25,000. Launched in June, the dollar-for-dollar matching campaign needed to raise $10,000 to meet the matching offer of $10,000 from long-time supporter and board member Mary Saile. The campaign, which ended on July 15th, raised vital funds necessary to support the programs, staff, and the continued preservation of Paulsdale, our beloved National Historic Landmark. With this financial support, over the next year API will be able to: Respond to the increasing demand for our leadership training programs for teens. We will be able to take 80 teen girls to the United Nations in New York to participate in the International Day of the Girl. API will also be able to take 20 girls to attend the National Young Feminists Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. With an increase in stable funding to support current and future staff , we can offer more events, more hours of programming, and devote more time to every teen in our premier leadership programs to ensure API continues its mission to educate and empower in the fight for equality. Secure the health of Paulsdale through a solid nest egg in the Preserve Paulsdale Fund. API is prepared for future expenses and will be able to continue restoration projects such as painting the outdoor shutters, replacing windows to historical standards, and safely removing any dead trees as needed. API is grateful for the continued financial support of the many people who help us advance our mission by making financial donations, large and small. Without them, we could not do what we do. STAFF & BOARD NEWS

We Have the Best Summer Interns. Seriously!

API continues to attract intelligent and effective summer interns. This summer we have beenfortunate to work with four fabulous students.

Amy Ribinsky spent the summer working with GLC Lead Coordinator Colleen Tryner to craft andrefine the dynamic curriculum for the Girls Leadership Council, API's signature leadership trainingprogram for teen girls in high school. Ribinsky is a senior at Rowan University where she is earningdual degrees in International Studies and Communication Studies, with a minor in French.

Two marketing interns worked with Marketing & Civic Engagement Coordinator Krista Niles thissummer, each working on projects aimed at enriching API's social media engagement with girls inhigh school and college. In addition to curating content for our daily posts, each intern worked onindividual projects.

During her internship, American University student Carly Elkins planned and designed a socialmedia campaign aimed to inspire millennials to become active voters. With a focus on assistingyoung voters with registering to vote, she also designed a "Voter" sticker API will feature in anupcoming fundraising campaign. Elkins is earning a B.A. in Media and Society, Psychology. Shewill be a junior this fall.

Sanjana Balakrishna, a high-school senior and member of API's Girls Leadership Council, isresearching and designing a social media campaign aimed at cultivating more teen engagementwith API's social media streams. She hopes to introduce Alice Paul's history and leadershiplegacy to more teen girls through a peer-to-peer testimonial campaign.

Additionally, our summer leadership programs for youth were fortunate to have Abby Hastingsinvolved. Abby assisted with both the Alice Paul Professional Leadership Institute (APPLI) and the

Lead-A-Way programs. A senior at Rowan University, Abby is dual majoring in English andsecondary education with a professional goal to become a high school English teacher.

API to Launch Voter Inspiration Campaigns

Keep a look out for two upcoming campaigns API has designed toinspire people to vote this November.

On August 17th, API will launch a social media campaign aimed toengage millennials and encourage this talented and sociallyengaged group of young people to register to vote and participatein the upcoming midterm elections. The campaign was designedby summer college intern Carly Elkins with support from APIstaffer Krista Niles, the Marketing & Civic EngagementCoordinator. If you aren't already following API's dynamic social media stream, please do sotoday. We need your help sharing this campaign to advocate for voter participation.

Additionally, on September 4th, API will launch a civic engagement and fundraising campaigndedicated to inspiring others to raise awareness about the importance of voting. For a small giftof $15 API will send donors a high-quality sticker that features the word "Voter." The sticker anda matching button will be given to donors who give $25 or more. (We're keeping the design a secretuntil the launch, but we can tell you that Carly designed them and we're sure you'll want one!)

Donations to the "Voter" campaign will help API facilitate voter registration events and willsupport the newly-formed Girls Leadership Council’s Social Action Committee, which is workingto create a voter tool kit for high school students nearing voting age. The tool kit will educatestudents about the voter registration process and the importance of voting as a civic duty andway to make your voice heard.

Director's Note

Amidst the bustle of a busy summer is a major change at API, in that we saygoodbye to program director Kris Myers. Kris came to API in her senior yearof college in 2002, having just completed a research paper on Alice Paul. Herinterest in women’s history and her knowledge about Alice Paul made her astandout as an intern, and we quickly found ways to keep her around until wecould bring her on staff as a program associate. In 2012 Kris took the role ofprogram director to oversee all of API’s history and leadership programs.

At Paulsdale we are surrounded by the results of Kris’ hard work over the past16 years: the “In Pursuit of Ordinary Equality” exhibit, the orientation videothat introduces visitors to Alice Paul’s story, the organization of the Alice PaulArchives and the Barbara Haney Irvine Library. Her imprint on API programs iseven more indelible. Thousands of elementary school children learned AlicePaul’s story through the Meeting Alice field trip that Kris designed. Thousandsof young women have learned basic leadership skills and found their feministvoice thanks to our middle and high school leadership programs that Kris hascreated. Thousands have enjoyed the adult programs - author talks, dramaticperformances, tours and presentations on women’s issues - that sheorganized.

Kris has been integral to API’s growth for 16 years and I’m sure you will join usas we thank her for everything she has done for API and for her passion tofurther Alice’s work for gender equality.
