TRANSCRIPT

Destiny is just a word for most, but for M-Squared music is his destiny and a reality from the beginning. Growing up in Baltimore, Maryland life was great even though raised in a single parent household; life was prosperous for his family. At the age of 6yrs old M-Squared’s uncle introduced him to the saxophone which would be his official introduction to music and other instruments that he previously was unfamiliar with.

Entering high school M-Squared learned about the heart of the band, the drum line. His grandmother noticed that he had an interest in the drums and helped him purchase his first set. M-Squared practiced day and night to perfect his craft so that he could try out for the high school band, and when the day arrived he achieved what he had been working so fiercely on. Unbeknownst to M-Squared, his father also was a drummer, some talents are just passed down whether you are aware of them or not. The hard work that M-Squared put into his music continued to pay off with a band scholarship to Morgan University.

Like any normal college student, the semesters are full of new experiences. The club was definitely one of M-Squared’s new experiences seeing that he had never been out before. Unlike normal college students it wasn’t the atmosphere of the people and fun that everyone was having, but instead the person who was creating all the fun and energy. This became my “true passion from the first sight”, say’s M-Squared. In 2002, M-Squared purchased his first set of turn tables, and went into practicing his new found craft as a deejay as he had once done before with the drums. After a few weeks of preparation M-Squared landed his first gig at a house party and 6 months later he was an opening DJ at the local clubs.

After two years of getting the experience that he needed as a deejay the local radio station 92Q had a contest for an intern of the day for Jay Claxton. M-Squared stayed up all night completing his demo for the station. The station only kept a few of the prospective deejay interns and M-Squared was one to receive only positive feedback. After returning back to Morgan M-Squared held down the boards, dj’ing, and serving as a radio personality on the schools radio station.

M-Squared got word that Radio-One’s 93.9 WKYS DC was looking for a new person to run their boards, with this opportunity he felt that the door to national acknowledgment as a deejay was in his near future. Working at the station he received knowledge from the best DJ’s and Radio Personalities such as Russ Par, Alfrida, EZ-Street etc… After acquiring all the knowledge and experience that he possible could achieve at WKYS, the opportunity to move south was presented to him. Radio-One Dallas’ 97.9 The Beat hired M-Squared as a deejay and radio personality. This perhaps was the best move at the right time, the Dallas music industry was on a tremendous rise.

With years of experience being on the radio, dj’ing parties M-Squared wanted to expand the outlet for Independent and National artists to get more exposure so he started his own radio show “Blast Off Radio”, which has featured DJ Khalid, Dorrough, Brian (formally of Day 26), Yung Berg and many more.

Growing up in a single parent household, funding for college seem to one of the difficulties that his family faced, and he wanted to make it that much easier for people to achieve a higher education.

11/25/11 R.I.P. Scoobie

By Rachel Campo

Early Friday morning on November 25, 2011 Adrian “Scoobie” Jessie’s promising life was cut short. Along with two others, he was a victim of domestic violence. It was reported that Jessie’s courageous actions prevented more lives from being taken. He was portrayed as a hero. The public found out what I already knew.

The rise that Adrian made from his humble beginnings to the status that he held at his death was heroic. His parents divorced while he was still a small child and he was raised by his mother Vickie Hicks. Life was difficult for Adrian. His family lived in public housing at times, but his mother always did her best to provide for him. He grew up living in different neighborhoods and attending different schools. He was able to find comfort in something that helped him to keep his life manageable. At a young age he found refuge in music. I remember while still in diapers we both danced to the latest Michael Jackson songs. Adrian began honing his skills as a performer by playing with Mr. Microphone. We sang at the top of our lungs when my mother noticed his raspy voice. She eventually gave him the name “Scoobie” from the cartoon character. The name stuck with him until adulthood.

Finally after attending several schools, he moved into my school district. My cousin and I both attended Desoto High School at the same time. Scoobie was how I introduced him to my friends. At first he didn’t get along with everyone; a few people even wanted to jump him. I felt it necessary to introduce him to one of my friends who had a lot of pull. Scoobie and Cameron Polk (C Polk) met, and were inseparable from that day onward. That friendship also produced a significant benefit for Scoobie later.

While in high school C Polk and three others formed a group called Paper Chaserz. When the group decided to add two more members Scoobie was selected as one of them. The group sky rocked the club scene with the hit “Lock Up” and soon thereafter came out with their most popular hit single “Franky”. In 2009 they were

proclaimed as the Best New Group of the DFW area, along with Single of the Year, with Franky making Billboards Top 100. Despite this success members of Paper Chaserz parted.

The tragic death of Adrian Jessie inspired all the formal members of Paper Chaserz to get back together. They recorded the song “Ball So Hard” which featured the last hook Scoobie ever recorded. They also started their own record company called PCMVP (Paper Chaserz Most Valuable Player) Records in honor of Scoobie’s legacy. Nothing will ever replace the charisma and presence that Adrian brought to the stage. The Paper Chaserz hopes to capture his spirit and passion as they perform their new hits. Adrian’s heroic actions saved lives that early Friday morning and the inspiration he generated continues to impact our lives today.
