The i-becomer Ideal A Denitional Note

Who is an i-becomer?The i-becomer Ideal represents a way o living ones

    work-lie and career.

Is lie all about having and doing (i.e. what

compensations we get and what work we do) or is

our work-lie all about being and becoming (i.e. the

outcome o ones work-lie is not my position or output

alone, but also the human being I have become).

Put another way, the i-becomer measures lies success

and ailures not in terms o the external world alone,

but also in terms o the transormation and evolution

    o his/her own personality.

The i-becomer Ideal A Denitional Note

How do I look out or ani-becomer?

THE FIRST SIGNo an i-becomer is his or herattitude to success and ailure.

I the individual measures success in terms o what

he or she has learnt or evolved into, then such an

individual is an i-becomer. (This is also called the

Human Excellence Ideal by Swami Ranganathananda).

THE SECOND SIGNo an i-becomer is his or herapproach to work and careers.

Careers are seen as spaces o contribution, and ones

own development is measured in terms o capacity

to contribute. (This we call the contribution thinking

    paradigm ).

This view is dierent rom a narrow conventional view

o careers as a journey up a hierarchy, or making my

business larger or having power over more people or

becoming more and more well-known and amous.

    4

  • 8/14/2019 Who is an i-Becomer?

    7/24

    V.Srinivas, 2010

THE THIRD SIGNo an i-becomer is his or herapproach to any task.

An i-becomer approaches any task keeping in mind

    deeper levels o compensation.

On the other hand, most people approach any task

keeping in mind only one type o compensation.

i-becomers are thereore likely to nd ulllment and

joy in and through work, unlike ordinary careerists

who largely tolerate and trudge through work, and nd

joy and ulllment elsewhere. (This corresponds with

the exhortation o the Bhagawad Gita that one must be

able to work without seeking ruits over and above the

rewards that come through work itsel).

    Transactional

    Compensation (e.g. salary, perks, etc.)

    Deeper levels o compensation(e.g. joy o making a dierence,

    increased sel-esteem and

    condence, trust, responsibility etc.)

The i-becomer Ideal A Denitional Note

THE FOURTHand most important sign o ani-becomer is the choice o work undertaken.

An i-becomer chooses work that enables him or her

to make deep and genuine contribution to himsel/

    hersel, organization, and society.

    What work will enable

us to make deep andlasting contribution to all

    stakeholders?Workthatwelovetodo.

    Workthatusesourbestabilities.

    Workthatmeetsourdeeperaspirations.

    Workthatchallengesustogrow.

    In short, where our passions,

    competencies, aspirations, and

    work-engagement are integrated

around a single vision of deep

    contribution to inner self, and

    outer society.

    STAGE

    ONE

The discovery o ourselves as entities

capable o evolution.i.e. not seeing onesel as a static human

being with a xed world-view about what

I like and what I dont, what I am good at

and what I am not, etc.

The struggle to move into and stabilize

into an inside-out view o lie.

i.e. I am now a human being who is not a

victim o circumstances, but is capable o

consciously developing mysel into an active

    change-maker o my own destiny.

    STAGE

    TWO

    12/24

    The i-becomer Ideal A Denitional Note10

The creation or development o a

    contribution mindset.

    a. An i-becomer who reaches stage 3, begins to

see lie as an opportunity to make a genuine

dierence to himsel / hersel and others.

    b. He / She no longer views lie as a burden and

does not nd all challenges /change to be an

unnecessary / unwanted burden. Instead he /

    she actively seeks out challenges.

    c. An i-becomer recognizes the concept o

contributing to others as having a doubleeciency.

    Creatingsuccessintheexternalworld.

    Wideningonesownidentityand

    consciousness rom a narrow sel-centered

viewpoint to an inclusive rame (success in

    the inner world).

    The creation o an

    evolutionary vision o lie.

An i-becomer views the whole o lie as a

    journey o being and becoming.

In this stage, the evolution o the personality

becomes the primary purpose o all work, all lie.

As a consequence, the i-becomers value

system becomes deeper, the sense o reedom

broadens, the eeling o oneness widens, and

    the energy o contribution strengthens.

The metric o lie by now has become wholly

    inner strength and outer contribution.

    STAGE

    The i-becomer Ideal A Denitional Note12

    STAGE

    FIVE

The fnal stage o an i-becomer is the stage o

    sustainable evolution o ones personality.

Sustainable evolution means that one is

constantly growing and evolving under all

circumstances; one tries to make a contribution

in every opportunity and, most important,

one appreciates wholly that others too are on

    an evolutionary journey towards increasing

    selfessness, increasing integrity, increasing

ulllment, and increasing inner and outer

    capacities.

An i-becomer views the whole o lie as a

    journey o being and becoming.

The i-becomer Ideal A Denitional Note

    Give me examples oi-becomers..

There is an i-becomer in all of us.

When that i-becomer within is awakened, we embark

on a journey o human excellence.

    This journey o human-excellence is the i-becomers

    true career.

Wherever, across time and space, men and women

have achieved excellence, not merely in a sport or skill

or event, or in terms o external success, but as human

beings who are valued or their inner qualities as well

their outward contributions; these human beings

may or may not have achieved success in traditional

material terms but their success as human beings was

always perceived and experienced by those aroundthem.

These men and women are examples o i-becomers.

    14

  • 8/14/2019 Who is an i-Becomer?

    17/24

    V.Srinivas, 2010

    Why should I be ani-becomer?

What happens i one is not an i-becomer.

    1. One is trapped by external measures o success

and ailure. One becomes, in short, a victim o

    comparison and one-upmanship.

    2. Ones capacity to grow and respond to new

circumstances is deeply compromised by ones xed

    world-view about onesel.

    3. One conuses acquisition o knowledge, expertise,

and new skills with growth o knowledge. In reality,

while we may have burdened our mind with all o

the above, we may not have become open to new

points o view, we may not have developed the

humility to relearn our subject in new contexts, wemay not have developed the capacity to unlearn or

let go o our previous historical knowledge.

The i-becomer Ideal A Denitional Note

How do I fnd an Ideal? The ideal o an i-becomer is within us.

Look or the highest within you - therein is the

    i-becomer Ideal.

Do I need an ideal or role

    model to transorm into an

    i-becomer?

The i-becomer ideal is the ideal o human excellence.

These are abstractions until we see them in fesh and

    blood.

Thereore role-models and living ideals are the most

eective way or us to begin on the Journey o an

    i-becomer.

I a person is doing some-thing and enjoying it, then

    is that person an

    i-becomer?

Doing and eeling are transient actions. One may enjoy

ones work today and one may, ater one has grown a

    little enjoy something dierent.

The i-becomer, on the other hand, is characterized

not by his or her actions, but his/her approach to lie.

This approach to lie can enable us to enjoy whatever

we are doing, and do anything we take up in a spirit o

    contribution and excellence.

The i-becomer Ideal A Denitional Note

How do I embark on theJourney?

The rst step in the journey is to awaken to ones own

    innite capacity.

The second step to experiment with ones inner

strength and become convinced that I can, i I choose,

make a dierence to the world outside.

The third step is to stretch ones capability so that one

is convinced that I am not a static or xed bundle o

knowledge and competencies. Instead, I am, in reality,

capable o innite expansion with corresponding

increase in power and capacity to contribute.

    The i-become initiative enables individuals,

    educational institutions & proessional

communities to invest in human capacities.

    i.e. the i-become initiative seeks to -

... enable tomorrows leaders to respond

    creatively to challenges,

... contribute eectively to the world around

    them,

... and engage with purposes larger than

    themselves.
