In-spiration literally means to “breathe in the spirit”. God gives us His spirit to give us strength and wisdom to see clearly what we must do.

did Augustine realise when he read that Bible verse?

“Take and Read!”Augustine was a famous playboy – with a reputation for having lots of romances. His mother, was a Christian & used to pray for him to change.

Lying in the garden one day, with a Bible he was looking at, he had a strange experience…

“Take and Read!”The passage that Augustine’s eyes fell upon was this one:

“Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.”

It made him think about his life of pleasure, and how it was wrong. He recognised, that God was speaking to him personally through this bible verse.

This gave him the courage to stand up, go into the Church and ask for forgiveness, and give his life to God. His mother saw him, and realised that all her prayers for him, were now answered.

1. Explain what Augustine used to be like.

2. Look up what he read and write it out. Romans 13: 13-14.

3. Explain why it changed him. **What sort of “inspiration” did Augustine get from the text? Check what your definition of inspiration is, first!
