Feast of the Assumption by Herbert O’Driscoll When I was a small boy in the 1930’s growing up in the south of Ireland, we had what was called in those days a “maid” to do the housework. She was not responsible for looking after us children, but I can recall a long rainy winter afternoon about the time I was five when she was either reading to me or telling me a story. For some reason the talk veered into things religious and she told me the story of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In terms of those long-ago days in the south of Ireland, the good lady probably thought of herself as doing missionary work among those poor Protestant children who had good parents and a nice home, but, alas, did not have the Catholic faith. She must have told the story well because everything about the experience has remained vivid after sixty years. She told me of how beautiful the Virgin Mary was, and she showed me a medallion that was hanging around her own neck and that carried the likeness of the virgin. She then told me about the Virgin Mary living for some years in the house of Saint John until one day angels came to the house, surrounded it, lifted it into the air, and carried it across land and sea until they reached Loreto in Italy, where they put the house back down again. As you can imagine, this in itself was an exciting story for a child, but it continued. When the Virgin was an old woman and near death, the angels came again. This time they surrounded her and took her with them into the heavens. Those who were watching could see that the Virgin Mary was no longer old or sick, but had become as beautiful as she had been in her youth. Ever after, she is with her son Jesus in heaven, near the throne of God, where she often intercedes with the Father and her son Jesus for people who pray to her and need her help. You will know from your own childhood how real that story was for me. Some years later, when I was a college, the pope promulgated the doctrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and it became an integral part of the Catholic faith. In some sense it is true to say that at least for me it had already become an integral part of the Christian faith at the deeper levels of the imagination. The trigger for that memory was the opening prayer when we say, “God, you have taken to yourself the blessed Virgin Mary.” It is a tribute to the story telling gift of our housekeeper that even today I tend to give that phrase a very precise meaning. During this year of Mercy we are invited to participate in a “gentle revolution” through our tender and meaningful actions founded on our

relationship with a forgiving God.

Mercy Action # 50

Pray to Mary each day during the week reflecting on your need for mercy.

Who do you say I am?

20TH

SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

14TH

AUGUST, 2016

Introduction

Many of us have experienced conflict around our faith or religious beliefs. We haven’t paid the price of discipleship in blood, as many have done and

still do today. But how do our conflicts reflect what Jesus told us to expect? Are our experiences

merely uncomfortable or inconvenient? Do they reflect the seriousness of our commitment to the Gospel? It’s jarring to remember that discipleship

can disturb our peace and divide us from one another.

First Reading Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10

Jeremiah is persecuted for preaching the truth.

Responsorial Psalm

Lord, come to my aid!

Second Reading Hebrews 12:1-4

A cloud of witnesses encourages us to persevere.

ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA!

My sheep listen to my voice, says the Lord; I know them and they followme.

ALLELUIA!

Gospel

Luke 12:49-53 Jesus’ message will cause division.

Prayers of the Faithful For the church: that it may be an ongoing

support for persecuted and challenged Christians … we pray,

For Christians living in danger

throughout the world, especially where persecutions are rampant … we pray,

For those places in the world torn apart because of religious differences … we

pray,

For families torn apart by religious belief or commitment … we pray,

For all who suffer for their faith,

regardless of their faith tradition; and for those who use religion to persecute others

… we pray,

For young people who are learning what it means to follow Christ … we pray,

For the ability to resist arrogance or a

sense of superiority in following Christ … we pray,

For those in too much pain to focus on

discipleship … we pray,

For all who are sick or dying; for those who care for them; and for those who

have died ... ... we pray,
