THE ANNUAL TRACY HALPIN RUN is just one way Whitman students give back to others. The run is organized by Beta Alpha Psi, Whitman’s student organization for accounting and finance students. Proceeds support an annual award to an outstanding student in memory of the late Tracy Halpin, who demonstrated exceptional leadership during her time as a Syracuse student.

AccountingToday, business has no geographic boundaries. Innovation is constant, and the economy

is driven by new ventures. Accounting professionals who think critically with a global

perspective are integral to the success of all business organizations.

According to a survey on trends in the supply and demand for accounting

graduates, the demand has rebounded significantly from the economic downturn in

recent years (2011, American Institute of CPAs).

Hiring of recruits with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting has increased

from 25,488 to 33,321–the second highest point since the survey began in 1971. The

placement outlook is promising.

To be licensed as a certified public accountant (CPA) in New York State, you

must complete 150 hours of education. You can meet the requirement by completing

a one-year M.S. degree program or by taking additional classes as necessary beyond

the educational requirements of the 123-hour professional program in accounting.

Your advisor can discuss with you the educational requirements for other states. The

Whitman School offers an M.S. in accounting. All Whitman accounting undergraduate

students who meet the minimum GPA required for this program will receive automatic

admission, GMAT waiver, and a scholarship offer based on academic merit.

As a Whitman accounting graduate, you will be in high demand by major public

accounting firms, corporations, government agencies, and not-for-profit organizations.

In recent years, more than half of the University’s accounting graduates accepted

employment with Big Four and other major CPA firms—before graduation.

Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises

The ability to envision and create new business ventures is a valuable skill, whether you

plan to be a founder in a startup, an employee in an existing firm, or a possible successor in

a family business. An entrepreneurial perspective adds value to organizations by identifying

fresh opportunities, growing new markets, and infusing innovation. Entrepreneurs are

transforming the way we live and how we conduct business.

Are you intrigued by the challenges and opportunities of starting a company or adding an

entrepreneurial mindset to a social venture or nonprofit? Do you plan to work for a large firm

in product or business development, where you will need to understand how to strategically

maneuver in a rapidly growing global market? If you enjoy innovative thinking, creating, and

managing, then Whitman’s renowned entrepreneurship and emerging enterprises (EEE)

program could be the perfect fit for you. The EEE undergraduate degree is consistently

ranked among the nation’s best by U.S. News & World Report.

As a major in EEE, you will have access to resources and outreach programs through

the Falcone Center for Entrepreneurship, which is home to more than 50 student-run

businesses in the Couri Hatchery, a supportive business incubator that helps startups

reach independence through mentorship and professional resources. You’ll also have access

to the D’Aniello Internship program, an internationally recognized initiative providing

entrepreneurial opportunities for highly qualified students.

Page 10: Whitman School of Management program guide

THROUGH THE BALLENTINE Investment Center, students receive Bloomberg training, use the latest technology, and videoconference with finance executives such as Daniel D’Aniello ’68, founding partner and chairman of The Carlyle Group, one of the largest private equity firms in the world.

FinanceToday’s international marketplace is one of turbulent shifts that can significantly impact

the finance strategies of all businesses. The complexity of modern finance requires

analysts to be forward thinking with a global business perspective in order to make

sound decisions and manage effectively.

The need for finance professionals is rapidly rising. Employment of analysts

is expected to grow 23 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all

occupations (Financial Analyst Job Outlook, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

A career in finance entails predictions, challenges, and uncertainty. Whether you

work on Wall Street or for a multinational company in Shanghai, the profession offers

opportunities that can be both intellectually and professionally rewarding.

Outside the classroom, you will learn from the vast resources in the Ballentine

Investment Center—11 Bloomberg terminals, video conferencing with executives,

trips to New York City, the Student Investment Club, and the $1.7 million Orange

Value Fund.

You will be prepared for careers in commercial, savings, or investment banking;

brokerage houses or the stock exchange; investment consulting firms; or the financial

departments of commercial or industrial businesses.

GLOBALIZATION is a key part of management today, and international study is a popular choice for Whitman students. SU Abroad offers semester options in Beijing, Florence, Hong Kong, Istanbul, London, Madrid, Santiago, and Strasbourg, and summer and short-term programs in these and many other locations.

ManagementManagers must think strategically while successfully adapting to new business practices

to stay ahead of the competition. They must be tech-savvy with the knowledge and

confidence to create a cohesive, responsive, and efficient team. Specialized skills and a

solid grasp of complex business concepts are needed to manage people and organizations.

If you are interested in honing your natural leadership skills, learning how to adapt

within fluid environments, and developing strategies for solving multifaceted business

challenges, the Whitman management major may be right for you. And, is an excellent

pairing with one of the other discipline-specific Whitman majors.

The management program offers many avenues for you to test your knowledge

and skills in real-life situations, such as industry internships, speakers, and career

exploration trips. The Management Department Advisory Board includes members

from Accenture, Apple, EMC, FedEx, Goldman Sachs, and Panera Bread who are

willing to mentor and network with management majors.

Page 14: Whitman School of Management program guide

Marketing ManagementMarketing is fast-paced, with more communications channels and fewer geographical

boundaries than ever before. It is a growing industry, with an overall employment rate

expected to outpace the national average by 18 to 26 percent through 2014 (U.S. Bureau

of Labor Statistics).

A successful marketing career requires strategic thinking and sound analytical

capabilities—both quantitative and qualitative—as well as strong interpersonal and

communications skills to understand and react to the demands of the customer. The

program is designed for you to encounter all the basic challenges in the industry: how a

company decides what to sell, the customers and markets to target, and the best means

of reaching them and persuading them to buy. If you are intrigued by the factors that

impact consumer behavior and what mediums and messages influence buying decisions

across industries, the marketing management major may be for you.

You will work in project teams—just as professionals do—to develop products,

determine pricing, and set up promotions. You will learn how to respond to the demands

of competitors, the government, and social and economic conditions. And then you

will figure out where you want your career to go with such real-world experiences as

the annual Marketing Career Exploration trip to New York City, which includes visits

to Turner Broadcasting, the Fox networks, Macy’s, GroupM, Bloomberg, and News

America Marketing.

THROUGH THE ANNUAL Marketing Career Exploration trip to New York City, Whitman students visit and meet with a variety of employers, such as Turner Broadcasting System Inc., where they were hosted by President David Levy ’84.

Real EstateWith a growing need for the analysis of real estate decisions, development, and

investments, you’ll be in high demand with a major in real estate. You’ll gain an

understanding of real estate fundamentals and learn to examine associated financial

information from diverse and conflicting sources. Your coursework will include such

topics as the development process, finance and investment, and capital markets. To

maximize your potential, mix in related programs at Syracuse University, including

architecture, law, and urban economics.

You will interact with real estate professionals through organized speakers visits,

field trips, and courses co-taught by professors and industry executives. Discover even

more about the business through the annual case studies class offered in New York City

and the annual Real Estate Symposium to discuss the latest trends. You’ll graduate with

an understanding of the economic and environmental impact of real estate.

Through the James D. Kuhn Real Estate Center, you will benefit from the

expertise of the accomplished Real Estate Advisory Board, Argus training, and the

many activities of the Real Estate Club.

Retail ManagementThe landscape of retail management and fashion merchandising is evolving at warp

speed, and the need for retail management professionals has never been greater.

Because of domestic and global retail marketplace changes and advances in technology,

consumers now have a world of options for procuring goods and services—increasingly

by using a device in the palm of their hand.

The retail management program places great emphasis on instilling a passion

for implementing best management practices in the workplace, thus preparing you

to become a leader in the field. In addition to the strong theoretical business base

provided within the school, you will receive a rigorous education to ensure you

are ready to enter the fields of buying and planning, product development, sales,

marketing, or store management. Build skills for the growing e-commerce market

through the digital retail concentration, a partnership between the Whitman School

and Syracuse University’s iSchool.

You will also enjoy support and guidance from Whitman’s high-profile Retail

Advisory Board, whose membership includes senior executives from Macy’s,

Bloomingdale’s, Ross Stores, TJX Companies, Fila, Gilt Groupe, Lord & Taylor, and

Kohl’s. The retail management program has a long history in developing young people

of talent to enter the field. Upon graduation 90 percent of retail management majors

have secured a position within the field.

Supply Chain ManagementSupply chain management (SCM) is an interdisciplinary field that examines, supports,

and improves cross-functional scenarios to enhance a company’s competitive advantage.

It involves forecasting, resource allocation, production planning, flow and process

management, inventory management, customer delivery, after-sales support and

service, and other business processes. Economists and employers single out supply chain

management for its strong growth potential. U.S. News & World Report describes it as

one of the 20 hottest job tracks of the new century.

Successful supply chain managers embrace change, have strong analytical and

people skills, enjoy problem solving, and are adept in information technology. If those

characteristics describe you and you are intrigued by the connections within and between

organizations, you may be well suited for a career in SCM.

The Whitman supply chain management program is the oldest in the country

and was recently ranked in the top 10 by Supply Chain Management Review. Whitman

graduates in supply chain management are sought and hired by such employers as

BASF, Gorton’s of Gloucester, Johnson & Johnson, Lockheed Martin, and Pratt &

Whitney.

SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY’S School of Information Studies (iSchool), ranked No. 1 in information systems by U.S. News & World Report 2013 Best Graduate Schools Rankings, will provide you with an innovative curriculum that reflects industry trends and incorporates rapidly changing and emerging technologies. 20 whitman.syr.edu

Dual Major Program:School of Information Studies

One of the more popular and complementary choices in dual majors is the joint

Whitman/School of Information Studies (iSchool) degree. Through this program,

you will develop a working knowledge of business along with technical training

in information systems, setting you apart from traditional management students.

Approximately 10 percent of students in the iSchool choose to pursue a dual degree

with Whitman. All eight majors at Whitman pair naturally with a major in the iSchool.

A dual major program with Whitman differs from a double major program within

the School. Dual majors signify a student has chosen to take a major in a completely

different school and combine it with one of the Whitman majors, thus completing

the requirements of both schools. Students who successfully apply for this dual major

program are generally ambitious and frequently bring in multiple Advanced Placement

(A.P.) credits in order to meet the requirements of both schools.

Dual Major Program: S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications

Through the powerful dual program with the S.I. Newhouse School of Public

Communications, you will gain a better understanding of the interconnectedness of

business and communications. The program will equip you with the essential skills

necessary to become an effective business leader and communicator, giving you an edge

in a competitive job market.

A dual major program with Whitman differs from a double major program

within the School. Dual majors signify that a student has chosen to take a major in

a completely different school and combine it with one of the Whitman majors, thus

completing the requirements of both schools. Students who successfully apply for this

dual major program are generally ambitious and frequently bring in multiple Advanced

Placement (A.P.) credits in order to meet the requirements of both schools.

It is recommended that you apply directly to the dual program with Newhouse as

an incoming first-year student when applying to Syracuse University. Once admitted,

you can then select one major from Whitman and one from the Newhouse School by

the end of your sophomore year.

Newhouse majors include advertising; broadcast and digital journalism; graphic

design; magazine; newspaper and online journalism; photography; public relations; and

television, radio and film. Depending on which combination of majors you select, your

credit requirements will differ.

SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY’S S.I. Newhouse School is one of the nation’s top schools of communication. Notable alumni include Bob Costas, Dick Clark, and Contessa Brewer.

World-Class FacilityA state-of-the-art, 160,000-square-foot building is the home of the Whitman School of Management. Inside you’ll have access to spacious classrooms with wireless capabilities, numerous student team rooms and lounges, a 200-seat auditorium, and the Olsten Café. More than 25 large flat-screen LCDs continuously display stock market quotes and customized announcements for students. And the Flaum Grand Hall, with a multitude of comfortable furniture, is the perfect place to meet up with friends or study between classes.

InternshipsWhitman students are required to do at least one internship; many will do two or three. In addition to the Whitman Career Center, the University’s Career Services staff assists students in finding local and national internships. Visit the Career Services web site at careerservices.syr.edu for more information. During the summer, you can earn college

credit by participating in management internships in London, Madrid, and Strasbourg; taking courses in international business in Shanghai; or studying globalization in a traveling seminar that visits large companies and governmental institutions in Belgium, England, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, and Switzerland.

Study AbroadIn today’s ever-shrinking world, international study abroad is more than a luxury. As you live and study abroad, you’ll broaden your perspective, learn to challenge assumptions, and begin to develop a worldview beyond your own cultural experience. Nearly 45 percent of students study abroad at some point in their college career, and the University’s highly respected international study program, SU Abroad, offers semester, summer, short-term, and yearlong options. Many Whitman students travel to London, where they follow a management curriculum taught by Syracuse University

faculty members. Syracuse University management classes are also offered in Madrid, Hong Kong, and Strasbourg. You can sharpen your awareness of international business methods and gain a competitive edge when seeking employment. For more information, visit suabroad.syr.edu.

Student OrganizationsYou can participate in one or more of the many professional organizations and honorary societies in the Whitman School. Regardless of your major, you’ll find a club that maintains active ties with the profession and plans such special events as lectures by prominent professionals and field trips to business sites. Some of the organizations you might be interested in as a management student include the American Marketing Association, American Production and Inventory Control Society, Delta Sigma Pi, Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises Club, Investment Club, National Association of Black Accountants, Real Estate Club, and Enactus.

Other centers include the Kiebach Center for International Business Studies, the Franklin Institute of Transportation and Distribution Management, and the Robert H. Brethen Operations Management Institute. Students can also apply to a number of internships and fellowships available through the centers.

Community Service Whitman is one of the first business schools in the nation to make service activity part of the curriculum. You can complete the service requirement by enrolling in a course that has a service-learning component or by securing a placement with an organization of your choice. The University’s Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public and Community Service helps you find a local community service placement that meets your personal and professional goals. Recent students have volunteered at such organizations as the Samaritan Center, which provides hot meals to people in need; Boys & Girls Clubs; the local VA Medical Center; and nearby schools.

The Honors ProgramThe Renée Crown University Honors Program is an enhanced educational experience for students who seek an intense intellectual challenge. The program requires an excellent command of language and a commitment to global awareness, civic engagement, collaborative work, and academic breadth and depth. As part of the experience, students select a topic they are passionate about and complete a major research thesis or creative project—some of which have included screenplays, films, paintings, engineering projects, and written theses. For more information, visit honors.syr.edu.

At the LibraryThe Syracuse University Library provides comprehensive on-site and online resources, as well as research support services. Take advantage of wireless access and laptops for loan; choose from a variety of comfortable study spaces; and refuel with beverages and snacks at Pages café in Bird Library. Bird Library, the largest library on campus, houses a Learning Commons and is open 24 hours a day, Monday through Thursday during the academic year. Joshua Fishman ’12 Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises and Marketing ManagementWhile attending Whitman, I was actively involved in Delta Sigma Pi, a professional business fraternity, and Enactus, a student organization leading environmental, economic, and social sustainable projects on

campus and abroad. Working with several entrepreneurs, I was able to take the knowledge I learned in the classroom and complement it with real-world experience. I was also very fortunate to study abroad in Hong Kong, where I took international business courses, studied Mandarin Chinese, and had the opportunity to explore Southeast Asia along with interning for a multinational finance organization. I began my career at Unilever after interning for two years with the company—working in marketing on brands such as Ben and Jerry’s, Popsicle, Breyers, and P. F. Chang’s. When I joined Unilever full time after graduation, I began working on the AXE business in brand management. In this role I manage several agencies, our innovation pipeline, new product launches, campaign activations, and the brand’s social and digital ecosystem.

Adam Davidson ’11 Finance, Management, and Supply Chain ManagementThe group dynamic at Whitman forces you to understand how all areas work together in a business, and it expanded my ability to work in groups in my current job. I was also able to develop my presentation style and public speaking skills through my

coursework as well as my involvement in extracurricular activities. I still utilize the connections and network I have established at Whitman to help me with challenging projects and career decisions. After my junior year I interned with General Electric in its Finance Management Program at GE Capital. I accepted a full-time offer with the program and had the opportunity to experience four different roles in different businesses and further build upon the skill set I obtained at Whitman. After finishing the FMP program, I accepted a role as an associate on the capital markets team.

Caryn Espy ’09Retail and Supply Chain ManagementMy coursework, time abroad in Hong Kong, as well as involvement in Enactus provided a great foundation for my professional career. I joined Unilever after graduation to pursue a career in supply chain management. I have held several

roles in different areas, including logistics and planning. Currently, I am an operational excellence and business waste manager at Unilever.

Kevin Hirst ’11Marketing Management (Whitman) and Television, Radio & Film (Newhouse); Theater minor (VPA)Simply put, Whitman provides the tools you need to launch your career. The coursework expands into different realms of the business world, preparing you with the necessary range of knowledge to not only

understand your primary field of study, but also to give you an in-depth comprehension of the many facets of how businesses operate. The team components embedded in Whitman’s curriculum take you through the process of working with others, engaging in leadership roles, and building team presentations—essential interpersonal skills I’ve continued to develop in my professional career. As a media planner and buyer at Serino/Coyne, the nation’s leading Broadway and theatrical entertainment advertising agency in New York City, the skills I’ve learned at Whitman in marketing, finance, interpersonal communications, negotiation, and strategy have helped me to advance my career and build the biggest brands on Broadway today. I wouldn’t be working on The Book of Mormon, Disney on Broadway, and Wicked without my Whitman education.

Page 31: Whitman School of Management program guide

Daniela RodriguezSenior, Dual Program in Accounting (Whitman) and Television, Radio & Film (Newhouse)As a sophomore I transferred into Whitman and Newhouse, being accepted into both programs. I chose Whitman for its valuable professors, vast network, and

outstanding reputation. Currently, as an intern for a renowned accounting firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers, I want to thank the Whitman School of Management for preparing me to face the challenging and rewarding career ahead of me.

James RansomSophomore, Dual Program in Information Studies (iSchool) and Management (Whitman)Whitman was never on my list as a choice of possible schools. During my college search I stayed away from large colleges, thinking that large schools would not have a sense of community. I attended a summer program at

Whitman, where I found a passion in building a business and pitching it to judges. The faculty worked with us in creating an incredible business and teaching me how to give professional presentations. Upon being picked up by my parents, I told them, “This is home.”

Darius EdwardsSophomore, Accounting (Whitman)The atmosphere of professionalism I perceived when touring Whitman has been echoed throughout my studies and involvement in student organizations. The constant challenge to grow and improve

put forth by Whitman’s faculty has encouraged my professional growth. The challenge has left me traveling to new heights through my undertaking of mentoring roles and my involvement in Whitman’s great organizations. One of Whitman’s many assets is Beta Alpha Psi, a professional accounting society, through

which I have had the opportunity to connect with industry leading accounting firms, helping land consecutive internships with Ernst & Young. My participation with Beta Alpha Psi allowed me to develop leadership traits while serving as community service officer and opportunities to travel to amazing places such as Miami, New York City, and even London.

Kelley LongSenior, Supply Chain and Retail (Whitman)Coming from a small town south of Boston, I was excited to take advantage of all of the opportunities that Whitman has to offer. One of my greatest college ambitions was to experience a

semester abroad, and this past fall I was fortunate to take my studies to Madrid, Spain. Through my involvement in Enactus, I was able to secure a summer internship in Unilever last year and was offered a second internship this summer. This fall, I look forward to being a part of the new IMPRESS program as a peer mentor.

Tatiana Turner Senior, Accounting As a native of Atlanta, I chose Whitman because I wanted to attend a school that not only had a strong accounting program but also a strong business school that would allow me the opportunity to get exposure to different types of majors. The Whitman School

makes it easy to double or change your major, so there is less pressure to come in knowing exactly what you want to do. Through Whitman events like the Career Fair and Career Madness, I met recruiters from a number of accounting firms and I had the chance to live in NYC and spend seven weeks working at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Campus Life At Syracuse University, you’ll enjoy the best of two worlds. The University is large enough to offer a wide array of academic programs, student organizations and performing arts groups, and a Division I athletics program. The University is also small enough to ensure that you’ll easily feel at home within the intimate community of your home college. Syracuse University students come from all 50 states and more than 130 countries, and they choose from among more than 200 majors and 100 minors offered in the University’s nine undergraduate schools and colleges. Regardless of your major or your home college, you’ll build lasting relationships with like-minded peers and mentoring faculty members.

On Main Campus, you’ll find a mix of classic and contemporary academic buildings and a sweeping Quad where you can enjoy lunch, toss a Frisbee, or just stretch out on the grass for a little idle skygazing. Residential housing is provided either on Main Campus or on South Campus, the latter of which is located about a mile away and served by a free shuttle. Living and learning communities are also offered to promote connections with your classmates around common interests. Most of the University’s 21 residence halls are equipped with lounge space, laundry rooms, and recreation space. Many also have a computer lab, café, or exercise area. Wireless capabilities are available in most locations across campus. At mealtime, you can choose from five residential dining centers, two student

centers with dining services, numerous cafés, and two campus groceries. Outside of class, you can choose from more than 300 student organizations, including performing arts groups; sports teams; and student-run print, radio, and broadcast media, to name a few. Work out, swim, or join a pickup basketball game at one of the recreation facilities; take in a concert or lecture at Hendricks Chapel; or get involved in any number of service opportunities through the Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public and Community Service. Opportunities for involvement extend into the community as well, with the University-city Connective Corridor initiative linking the campus with downtown galleries, museums, theaters, music venues, and cultural festivals.

The CityThe mini-metropolis of Syracuse, New York, fuses distinctive neighborhoods, year-round festivals, parks, professional sports, destination shopping, and a thriving art, music, and social scene. View American impressionism at the Everson Museum of Art. Hike the trails at Green Lakes State Park. Browse the shops in historic Armory Square. You’ll soon find that the University campus and city community are deeply intertwined. You can take classes downtown at the University’s modern Nancy Cantor Warehouse building, which houses community art spaces and a creative

problem-solving lab. You may also want to join faculty, staff, and other students as they work with the city on planning the Connective Corridor, a three-mile urban design project that links the University with the city’s cultural attractions. You’ll likely be tempted to take a road trip, too. Just down the road are the Finger Lakes. Venture north to ski, hike, or gaze at the Adirondack Mountains. Explore the area’s landscape, and you’ll soon discover the city and region’s distinctive character and robust spirit. Join other Central New Yorkers in capturing the energy of each of the four

seasons: brilliant color displays in fall, snowy ski trails in winter, flower-filled parks in spring, and balmy beaches in summer. Come see for yourself. We invite you and your family to visit Syracuse University to experience the campus and community, and meet with our faculty, staff, and students. The Office of Admissions is open Monday through Friday and selected Saturdays in the fall and spring. Call 315-443-3611 or go to admissions.syr.edu to schedule a visit.
