On December 1, the third class of Baltimore high school stu-dents graduated from the Save the Future financial literacy program. These young high school students worked throughout the semester to glean a firm understanding of today’s business environment. The amazing progress of these students throughout the se-mester would not have been possible without the help of 16 Johns Hopkins tutors. These Johns Hopkins tutors prepared weekly lesson plans to help the high school students under-stand complex financial con-cepts. With lessons ranging from commercial banking to financial securities, the high school students in Save the Future gradually became finan-cially literate and economically attune.

With the 2010 graduating class, over 60 students have now graduated from the Save the Future program. Upon gradua-tion, Save the Future students are charged with utilizing their new knowledge to enrich their high schools and communities.

This spring, Save the Future will be partnering with Johns Hop-kins Student Enterprises to offer a new program that will develop entrepreneurial skills and teach students how to create their own business.

Further updates will be given regarding this program – con-tact Kate Vacovec ([email protected]) if you are interested in tutoring for this program.

Center for Leadership Educa-tion’s Joshua J. Reiter along with Jonathan Bosarge will be holding a Theater Workshop during intersession. THEATER WORKSHOP: THE MAKINGS OF A MUSICAL Calling all directors, performers, actors, singers, choreographers, and playwrights (or all you “wannabes”). Have you ever wanted to be involved in “work shopping” a musical before it goes into pro-duction? Well now is your chance. A Johns Hopkins profes-sor wrote a musical but it needs plenty of work! This workshop class will allow you to review and modify the musical through an understanding of the charac-

ters, song placement and any other changes we uncover as a class though multiple read-throughs and scene staging.

You will be able to add your input, comments, thoughts, suggestions, and yes...even your primal screams! The ultimate goal is to have it ready to go live. If you ever wanted to take a

musical into production, now is your chance to be part of it from the inside. All skill levels are welcome! DATES: Tuesdays and Thursdays, January 11, 13, 18, 20, 25, 27 TIME: 6:00-8:00PM PLACE: Room 162, Mattin Center FEE: None MINIMUM: 4 MAXIMUM: 10

educating loan recipients on money management and en-trepreneurial skills. Ms. Lae-greid explained that this model increases the likelihood of loan repayment and business suc-cess. Some businesses and organizations provide small loans and expect a quick return without understanding the needs of their clients. In this situation, the number of de-fault loans is great. As a result, there is a growing division in the world of micro-financing.

The goal of the Social Invest-ment Outreach, a micro-financing student group at Hopkins, is to raise money to lend to poverty stricken areas and focus on the holistic needs of their clients through educa-tion. If you are interested in what Hopkins students are doing with micro-lending, feel free to contact [email protected].

Last Thursday night, AKPsi and Social Investment Outreach (SIO) invited Lisa Laegreid, Dep-uty Director of the Microcredit Summit Campaign to speak about micro-financing.

Ms. Laegreid explained the difference between true micro-financing versus straight lend-ing micro-loans. Micro-financing organizations address the holistic needs of the client. The business relationship in-cludes giving out small loans to help people in poverty to be-come self-sustainable while
