Whitewater rafting is summer’s more thrilling adventure, one that draws tourists and adventure seekers from across the state and across the country. And the Arkansas River is one of the most rafted rivers in the U.S.

Located in the heart of the Colorado Rockies, the Arkansas River offers both heart-pounding adventures and beautiful, scenic floats. If you’ve never gone rafting, chasing whitewater can feel like a cross between riding a roller coaster and riding a bucking bronco. But there is also time to look up at steep hills and cliffs, maybe spot a bighorn sheep, turn your face to the sun.

Half-day trips are $65 and offered June 2, 9 and 23; our full-day trip on June 30 is $100.

For more information and to sign up, call Outdoor Recreation at 719-556-4867, Option #1. Or visit them in Bldg. 640.

Come on. Take the plunge.

The most advanced section on the Arkansas River, the most popular whitewater rafting river in the country, begins in the little mountain town of Granite, which quickly fades away as you enter the exciting Granite Gorge, with its Class III and IV rapids. They’re just a warm-up for what comes next.

Get ready to paddle hard as you journey through the Rite of Passage, the gates of Pine Creek, where the river narrows by half. Here you’ll encounter the most continuous rapids in the state. It’ll test your stamina.

This is where the river becomes a creek and its gradient drops an astounding 200 feet with a must-make crux move. You barely have time to catch your breath before starting on The Numbers. It’ll test your cardio, too.

Each Class III-Class V rapid is punctuated by continuous white-water in between, including a steep ledge drop into No. 5. This run is intense and demands good physical condition.

This thrilling adventure is available only to Single Air Force Active Duty or Air Reserve Component personnel through funding from the Single Airman Program Initiative (SAPI).

Trip date is Saturday, June 16. Cost is just $45!For more information and to sign up, call Outdoor Recreation at

“If you could go on a vacation anywhere, where would you go?” my girlfriend asked.

“I’d like to go back to Alaska, or perhaps cruise Australia and New Zealand. Australia,” I finally replied, “but you’re coming with me!”

That was how our vacation of a lifetime started. After some research online, it was time to consult an expert at Peterson AFB Leisure Travel. And we are grateful we did! The experience, service and guidance we received made our expedition to “down under” something we will cherish forever.

Our journey began in Sydney, New South Wales. An extraordinary city on the eastern coast of Australia, with one of the main recogniz-able tourist attractions of the continent: Sydney Opera House. Spending two nights in downtown, we explored the environs via ferry or on foot. We had arrived during the Chinese New Year celebration. An added bonus!

On the third day, we boarded our cruise ship, Sun Princess, and began our voyage to New Zealand (NZ). We explored our vessel, shopped its stores, enjoyed its attractions and, of course, ate wonderful meals. Our choice of Anytime Dining was ideal for us: just walk into the buffet-style dining area and select what you want, when you want. The meal choices were virtually endless.

Arriving at the South Island, our port of call

LEISURE TRAVEL

(*Note: While our building does not officially open until 9:30 a.m., we at Leisure Travel are always at our desks and available by telephone by 8:30 a.m. Please don’t hesitate to call us.)

AUSTRALIAOur vacation of

a lifetime

was Dunedin, influenced by Scottish culture. We spent our day there walking the streets of down-town, where I found a store that sold my ancestral crest! The ship made seven ports of call in NZ, each one memorable in its own. Wellington for its breezy and mountainous terrain; Tauranga, only an hour’s drive to Hobbiton; and Auckland, the country’s most populous city.

Sightseeing and scenery, whether on paid ex-cursions or just following our nose, was splendid throughout! Everywhere we went, everything was lush and green. Plus, the locals were always pleasant. We even got a special ad hoc tour ( just by walking up and asking!!!) of the resident con-stabulary in Napier.

I could go on and on raving about our vaca-tion. Now we are planning our land/sea cruise to Alaska. And, yes, it’s time to call up our be-loved Leisure Travel agent and get the process underway!
