The extreme and unpredictable weather earlier in the year has cast doubts over the likely success of this year’s harvest – a factor that makes it more important than ever to maximise productivity in 2020. MacDon’s Draper series of combine headers have been designed with exactly that in mind. Best of all, they can be used on ANY make of combine, to harvest ANY crop, in ANY conditions. Given the wild climate swings we have experienced over the last few years, a MacDon header could be just what you need to get the most from your crops this harvest. Sounds too good to be true? You need not worry, as this is a rare case of a machine that really lives up to its promise...

At the heart of MacDon’s designs is the instant response Active Float System which provides 4.8 degrees of lateral

float and 178 mm (7in) of vertical float independent of the combine feeder house. That means you can cut extremely close to the ground without pushing soil. The operator has On-the-Go Control – from the driving seat – of ground pressure, cutting height and fore-aft header tilt, while Active Crop Flow gently places crop on the side drapers heads-first and swiftly moves it onto the feed draper, where it’s scooped up into the combine’s feeder housing. New Holland has developed two smart phone apps to help operators get the best performance and efficiency from their combine harvesters – Harvest Excellence and a Grain Loss Calculator. The Harvest Excellence app supports farmers when setting up their New Holland combine harvester. It guides the operator through various steps to collect all the information on their machine and field conditions including combine model, soil, crop, yields, moisture, straw length, slope, presence of stones and wheeled or tracked combine. Once

The app also offers an issue resolution tool that guides the operator though suggested actions. The Grain Loss Calculator app supports farmers operating combines from any brand or model, through a quick calculation that optimally adjusts the combine harvester for maximum efficiency. Farmers can determine the combine’s grain loss in three easy steps:1. Enter the brand of the combine, selecting header and show widths.2. Select the crop from a choice of 30 types and enter the yield.3. Insert the grains counted on the ground in a limited area.The app will instantly calculate grain loss, showing the percentage and quantities per hectare. Both apps can be downloaded free from the Apple Store or Google Play.

Kuhn power harrows (above) are characterised by robustness and build quality. Available in working widths from 1.2m to 8m, they can be used solo or combined with a seed drill. A wide selection of tines and equipment, in addition to a large range of rotor speeds, make these power harrows implements that you can rely on in highly variable conditions. Most Kuhn power harrows are equipped with duplex gearboxes, allowing you to choose the rotor speed most suited to your needs, while the entire driveline is protected by a cam type cut-out clutch.

Kuhn Venta integrated pneumatic seed drills(above right) can be used in combination with Kuhn's power harrows and disc cultivators. They can be set up easily for various seeding conditions and many settings can even be adjusted from the tractor seat while working. A turnbuckle on either side of the drill makes it possible to control seed depth accurately to working conditions. Seed rate can either be adjusted from the cab, or controlled by an application map.

No sooner has the final field been harvested than thoughts turn to autumn tillage and seeding to make the most of stubble to create well-prepared, fertile seed beds. The Väderstad Rapid RDA600S (above) is the seed drill that carries out seedbed preparation, levelling, drilling and re-consolidation in one pass. This model comes with the hardy System Disc Aggressive, track eradicator tines, bout and pre-em markers, interactive depth control, a tramline kit, reinforced tyres, work lights, wireless Gateway technology and E-control as well as Väderstad’s SeedEye – a unique calibration system for seed counting and monitoring.

Väderstad's reputation has resulted from the company's focus on essential drilling and cultivation tasks. Väderstad designs its machines to create optimal soil conditions to maximise yields. Build quality and durability are key factors in the Väderstad offering, which spans an extensive range of cultivators, harrows, rollers and rapid, precision seed drills. The HE-VA Stealth (above) is a medium depth, low disturbance subsoiler. Its scalloped, straight, front cutting discs cut through the surface ahead of the low disturbance legs to minimise soil burst and in turn grassweed germination. Legs are staggered in 2 rows to allow residue flow through the machine, reducing the tractor HP requirement. Leg spacing is standard at 500mm but can be altered to 450mm, 500mm or 550cm for differing soil types and conditions.

Unique to the HE-VA King Rolls(below and below left) is the SAT system which ensures the adjustable weight transfer is spread evenly across the full working width. It's available in widths from 12.3m to an incredible 20.3m, yet when folded for transport has a width under 3m.

New Holland’s range of PHV ploughs (above) offer outstanding all- round performance. Compatible with tractors of up to 225hp, this range is equipped with a heavy duty headstock and 150mm diameter pivot shaft and needle bearings. All models are equipped with a hydraulic alignment cylinder as standard and the working width can be adjusted between 30-50cm – on the go if desired.

The intelligent use of field stubble can bring significant agronomic benefits to arable farmers, and transform what was once considered a waste product into something highly nutritious for the soil. The incorporation of stubble, straw and other plant residues assists in speeding up decomposition for quicker nutrient release. Furthermore, it enables farmers to utilize soil moisture just after harvesting to establish an optimal climate in which microbes can thrive and work best. Employing shallow cultivation directly after harvest encourages lost and dormant seeds to germinate, enabling a seedbed to be established for intermediate crops such as mustard and radishes. At the same time it removes the main source of nourishment for slugs – thereby acting as a pest control measure. The New Holland STC300RS heavy-duty stubble cultivator (above) has a 3m working width and offers numerous advantages, including rigid tines for an even working depth of between 6 – 25cm and is fitted with wing shares, to ensure a full cut across the entire working width.

The Sky Easy Drill (right) is specifically designed as a no-till drill but works equally well in minimum tillage conditions, on consolidated ploughed soil and when drilling into cover crops. This model has three hoppers allowing three different products to be drilled at two different depths. Individual coulter selection, choice of seed spacing and alternative seed distribution are all controllable from the cab and the 3.5 degrees coulter angle dramatically reduces soil disturbance retaining as much moisture as possible in establishment. With 250kg of coulter pressure, this drill more than lives up to its direct drill nature and speed and accuracy is better than ever!

The Kverneland Accord E-Drill Compact (above) is designed for seedbed preparation, re-compaction and sowing, all in one pass. With a hopper capacity of up to 1,400 litres, the E-Drill compact has a centre of gravity close to the tractor to reduce the lifting power requirement and is available in 3.0, 3.5 and 4m widths – from our Hereford branch.

Bednar is a new franchise for T H WHITE – part of a new alliance with Case IH – available from our Frome and Stockbridge branches. The brand is already proving highly popular across the UK. One of the implements that has really taken off is the Bednar range of Omega seed drills, which are not only versatile in terms of various crop types, row spacings of 12.5cm or 16.7cm and seeding quantity variation, but also feature a lightweight construction concept to minimise soil compaction. The Bednar Omega OO_L (grain only) model is available in widths from 3m to 8m. Stepping up to the Bednar Omega 00_FL (right) there is the ability to direct drill, strip till drill, min till drill and for full cultivation sowing, making this a drill that really meets all needs. It is currently available in 4m and 6m working widths.

The Bednar SwifterDisc short disc cultivator (below) is a true 'bread and butter' machine for tillage in all conditions. This trailed wide disc cultivator features a compact design in widths from just 3m to 12.4m and an 18.4m version will be released later this year. High operating speeds of up to15 km/h to 18km/h are possible. Individual suspension of the discs with rubber segments, makes the machine suitable for high quality, swift and inexpensive post-harvest stubble cultivation or seedbed preparation. with our customers, especially the Pöttinger Terradisc compact disc harrows (below) which are available as mounted or trailed models in 3m to 10m working widths. They are designed specifically for stubble cultivation as well as seedbed preparation and working depths between 5 to 15 cm are possible. The compact design, and aggressive disc position ensure a good soil penetration and a thorough mixing of crop residues.

Many maintained grass areas inevitably became quite overgrown during lockdown. Bringing flat areas back into trim was the first challenge, but what about the slopes? The answer is the Spider range of remote-controlled slope mowers which are designed for safe maintenance of steep, challenging terrain – making light work of slopes up to 40 deg independently and up to 55 deg with the built-in winch – as well as general mowing. If the installation qualifies for an OLEV grant subsidy, that will automatically be deducted from the quoted cost. For commercial installations the calculator looks at two typical examples – a 7kW dual socket wall charger installed for the benefit of members at a Gloucestershire golf club and a 22kW dual socket fast post charger with 3m of trenching in a Surrey supermarket car park. For workplace installations guide costings are provided for socket post chargers in a head office car park and a dual socket charger for a small business premises. The final price will depend on factors such as the number and make of chargers, location of the install and ease of connectivity. The vigorous growth of hedgerows this year will mean it's important to get under way with the hedgecutting season in September.

To help you get the job done in the tidiest, most efficient way, McConnel has

added two new 60hp Power Arms models to its popular 55-Series hedgecutter range – both in stock at T H WHITE. The new PA5555-60 and PA5755-60 models come with reach of 5.5m and 5.7m respectively – a useful increase

of 0.4m and 0.3m compared to the standard PA5155 and PA5455 models. They also benefit from an additional five horsepower increase to a 60hp hydraulic system. As well as the boost in reach and hydraulic horsepower, the three-point linkage mounted power arms gain an integrated oil cooler for increased longevity, redesigned rear guards to facilitate easier service access and high-visibility LED road lighting. McConnel’s signature features –parallel-arm and Hy-Reach geometry – are a standard part of the design, as are seam welded c-section arms and fully bushed pivot points to reduce stress and ensure greater durability. Hydraulic Power Slew is another standard feature which enables safe, compact transport, also providing operators with the flexibility to cut precisely in tight corners. Both the new PA5555-60 and PA5755-60 are available with either cable controls or Motion Control - McConnel’s popular electronic proportion control system.
