Gargrave Warriors

Well what can I say? What an absolutely fabulous day we all had (without exception). Team spirit was high, the

weather was perfect—not raining and not too hot and sunny. We set off with a gentle run, got around the corner to

find the first obstacle—a steep hill which we had to run up, down, up, down and then up again—nothing like getting

gently into it! Ran another km or so into a wooded area which is when we hit the mud—you have never seen mud like

it. Another few obstacles consisted of jumping over fire into it, crawling through tunnels filled with it and climbing up

hills and sliding down the other side into muddy water. Some of the mud smelled so bad that everybody came out

with circles of flies around their head like in a cartoon! Anyway I could go on, but I’m sure some of the photos below

tell our story. We completed the 12k challenge in 2hours 40 minutes.

Our fundraising page on rocket fund https://rocket.fund/p/GargraveWarriors/ is still up and running until next week in

the hope that we can raise more money. As of today we have raised a magnificent £5,700 which will go towards new

IT equipment. Thank you to everyone who has donated or pledged money. It is not too late to donate— there are

three ways in which you can do this:-

Sealed Bid Auction

As mentioned on the last newsletter we have the following gifts to auction:-

• Return flights for 2 adults to any European destination with Jet2

• A family ticket for The North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Pickering to Whitby (or return)

• A private hangar visit at Leeds/Bradford airport together with goody bag

• A Silentnight cuddly hippo

These will go to the highest bidder in a sealed bid auction. Bidders place bids ‘secretly’, and are unaware of what

others have bid in the auction. Thus bidders do not engage in competition with other bidders. They instead make bids

based upon what they consider the item’s market value to be. Bids are only revealed at the end of the auction, and

the bidder who placed the highest bid wins. Bids should be returned to school by 9am on Monday 15th July at the

latest. Jane Ellis, Chair of Governors will open all the sealed envelopes and announce the winners at the end of the

day. Please complete and return the bid form attached at the end of the newsletter and return to school in a sealed

envelope. If you would like to bid for more than one item, please complete a separate form and return in a separate

envelope. Terms and Conditions apply.

Parent Governor Vacancy

There is to be an election for parent Governors. The governing body, when it is complete, will be

made up of 9 Governors of which 2 will be elected by the parents. There is currently 1 parent

governor place to be filled.

The term “parent” includes anyone who has custody of a child registered at the school, as well

as “natural” parents. Parents can stand for election and vote in secret in the election, if a ballot

is needed.

Parent Governors have a four year term of office and continue to serve even if their child(ren)

leaves the school during this period.

What Do Governors Do?

Their task is to govern the school. This means focusing on the core functions of providing strategic

leadership, holding the headteacher to account and making sure the school’s money is well

spent. This is a demanding task for which all governors need to have, or develop, relevant and

appropriate skills.

The skills that would be of interest to the governing body (as identified in our skills audit) are:

Ability to interpret data

Leadership experience in education, governance or another sector

Experience of change management and project management

School financial management

Experience of school sector HR policy and processes

Literacy, maths or other curriculum interests

If you are appointed, you would be required to complete a skills audit (which is carried out annu-

ally by all governors) and sign the National Governors Association Code of Conduct.

What is expected of governors?

• To acknowledge that accepting office as a governor involves the commitment of

significant amounts of time and energy (we consider the minimum amount of time is 25

hours per term which includes attending monthly meetings, visiting classes to monitor and

report on core subjects, being available to meet with external contacts of the school,

including Ofsted inspectors and attend training as and when required).

• To strive to work as a team in which constructive working relationships are actively

promoted.

• To observe complete confidentiality when matters are deemed confidential or where they

concern specific members of staff or pupils, both inside or outside school.

• To accept collective responsibility for all decisions made by the board or its delegated

agents. This means that we will not speak against majority decisions outside the governing

board meeting.

Please contact Sharon Aldous, Clerk to governors if you are interested in being nominated as

parent governor who will provide you with a more detailed “job specification” and a nomination

paper.

Closing date for nominations is 18th July 2019.
