Using Careverge to Improve the Health of Your Members:

Help Them When they are Sick, and Engage Them When They are Well

The Situation

In the US, health care costs continue to spiral out of control. Total spend now exceeds $2.5

trillion per year, representing about 17% of our country’s GDP. This is a larger percentage than

that of any other industrialized country.

Healthcare providers and other stakeholders have come to realize that lifestyle modifications

and preventive therapies, effectively applied, can have massive cost-avoidance results. For

example, smoking-cessation initiatives are projected to lower the

related medical costs from cardiovascular disease, coronary heart

disease and diabetes by as much as $72.5 billion over a 30-year

period.

Providers and health plans have striven for decades to create a deeper, more influential

relationship with consumers in an effort to persuade them to “do the right thing.” From

medication adherence and preventive health screenings to dieting and exercise, people are

continuously asked to alter their behaviors and to become more responsible for their own

health outcomes. Billions of dollars and countless hours are invested on a variety of care

management activities, all intended to influence healthy behaviors, but there has been no

“breakthrough” activity that has proven to significantly move the needle.

Over much of that same time period, hundreds of health web sites have been created, each one

with more complete clinical information and a friendlier user interface than the last. Some of

these web sites are actually quite well done. However, all of them miss the fundamental issue:

people only search for health care information when they, or a loved one, are sick. Healthy

How Does Careverge Work?

The primary components of Careverge include:

A Health Dashboard

Here, the Member is presented with a summary of their current health status, along with

information about future health risks. The dashboard is created from a compilation of data

sets, which can be imported from any source, or populated by the Members themselves.

Communities

Members are able to enter social networks of people in similar situations. These may be based

on health conditions or experiences. Communities include blogs written by acknowledged

industry experts and opportunities for Members to interact directly with each other via

conversation forums, Q&A, and chat. Each Member determines the degree to which their

information is shared, and complete anonymity is the default option.

Gaming

Utilization of Careverge is very much like a journey game. Each Member is led down an

individualized path. Every interaction that a Member has with Careverge is worth a number of

“Carepoints.” These points allow Members to achieve various levels, creating a hierarchy. At

first, leveling up is quick and easy. However, as the Member spends more time on Careverge,

leveling up becomes more difficult and requires more effort. This is similar to the mechanics

that are used by many popular social games. A later version of Careverge will see Carepoints

tied to a Careverge Card to allow for the redemption of points for rewards and prizes.

Carepoints are earned for every interaction type in the Careverge experience. In addition,

perhaps the most exciting portion of Careverge is games around health-related issues. These

Careverge has a medical information repository that is world class. Virtually any health-related

Careverge learns about their preferences and information is subsequently presented in a

manner consistent with prior searches and content review. Careverge Members also earn

Carepoints based on the amount of information they review on any given topic.

Healthy Lifestyle Adherence Calendar

This is an easy-to-use tool that integrates all of the important components of a person’s health

and wellness plan. Then, depending on how each person chooses to receive communications

(e-mail, text, or mobile app), a series of prompts are sent to remind that person to perform
