White House Drug Czar visits Chrysalis House On February 23, 2011, White House Office of Na-tional Drug Control Policy Director Gil Kerlikowske visited Chrysalis House. Kerlikowske coordinates all aspects of Federal drug control programs. He was invited to Kentucky by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell and Congressman Hal Rogers. Leg-islative aides from the offices of McConnell and Rogers as well as Representatives Ben Chandler (D-KY), Mary Bono Mack (R-CA), and Senators Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Dianne Feinsten (D-CA), and Dick Durbin (D-IL) accompanied Kerlikowske. Chrysalis House hosted a town hall discussion and invited members of the community. Attendees in-cluded: Congressman Ben Chandler, Secretary of Justice and Public Safety J. Michael Brown, Corrections Commissioner LaDonna Thompson, Kentucky Drug Czar Van Ingram, LFUCG Assistant Police Chief Mike Bosse, and LFUCG Commissioner of Social Services Beth Mills. The town hall meeting focused on the national and statewide substance abuse epidemic and the effectiveness of family-based treatment. Kerlikowske specifically wanted to visit Chrysalis House due to its family-based treatment model. Chrysalis House is one of the few programs in the nation to admit pregnant women and allow children to reside on-site with their mothers. Imani Walker from The Rebecca Project for Human Rights said, "More moms land in jail rather than a family-based treatment facility."

Midway College “Students in Free Enterprise” Partner with Chrysalis House

Midway College’s Sustainability Fair was held at the Chrysalis House Community Center on January 27, 2011. The Sustainability Fair was organized by Chrysalis staff and Midway College’s “Students in Free Enter-prise” (SIFE) organization. SIFE has collaborated with Sam’s Club and Kentucky American Water to provide the women of Chrysalis House, and the greater Lexington community, with comprehensive education about environmental sustainability. At the event, Marjorie Guyon’s artwork Ivory Hands, a part of the Small Blessings Project, was unveiled. The Small Blessings project provides reproduced images from 20 original paintings to cast renewed light in the places where it is needed most—nonprofit agencies. This project was sponsored by Traditional Bank.

Winter time at Chrysalis House

This winter, Chrysalis House Board Emeritus Neal Vaughan and Chrysalis House Executive Director Lisa Minton received high honors. On December 8, 2010, Mrs. Minton was awarded the 2010 Collaborator of the Year Award from the Kentucky Division of Behavioral Health for her outstanding dedication and service. On January 25, 2011, Mrs. Vaughan was honored with the Lexington Forum Spirit Award for her volunteer ef-forts with Chrysalis House and the community. The award is given annually to a person who has made a meaningful change in the Bluegrass and was presented at the Mayor’s State of the Merged Government Address. Mrs. Minton and Mrs. Vaughan are tireless in their efforts to provide services to those in need.
