his %other to their ca%'# (hey know his %other because she is half-dog# White
Fang begins to learn the ways of %en)and of other dogs# (he dogs hate hi%, so hehates the%# *e learns to fight and to kill# &t is a hard life, but will it change+ Can
White Fang learn to love+When ack ondon wrote White Fang in 1!./, he was a fa%ous writer# &n
1!." his book The Call of the Wild 0also a enguin Reader2 told the story of a dog,3uck# 3uck has an easy life in sunny California, but then he goes to the 4londike
in the cold north# *ere he has to work, and to fight# A%erican readers loved the
story#
Wolves were very i%'ortant to ondon# (hey were strong and wild, and theyfought hard# *e liked this in ani%als)and 'eo'le#
ack ondon was born in 15/ in 6an Francisco# *is fa%ily had little
%oney and he left school at fourteen# &n the su%%er of 1!5 he went to the
4londike# (he tri' was difficult and dangerous, and he had to stay there for thewinter# *e en7oyed the hard life and the strong 'eo'le# ater, he wrote about the
'lace in %any of his books and stories#
After White Fang, ondon wrote thirty-two other books# *e visited
Australia, and had a far% in California# *e died in 1!1/#
Chapter 1 The Gray Cub
(he two wolves %oved slowly down the Mackenzie River# $ften they
left it and looked for food by the s%aller rivers# 3ut they always went back to thelarge river#
(he she-wolf looked everywhere for a ho%e, and then one day she found
it# &t was a cave near a s%all river# 6he looked inside it very carefully# &t was war%
and dry so she lay down#(he he-wolf was hungry# *e lay down inside the cave but he did not slee'
well# *e could hear the sound of water and he could see the A'ril sun on thesnow# 8nder the snow, and in the trees, there was new life#
(he he-wolf left the cave and followed the ice bed of the s%all river# *ewanted food# 3ut eight hours later he ca%e back, hungrier than before# &n the wet
snow he was slow and could not catch anything#
6trange sounds ca%e fro% inside the cave# When he looked inside, the she-
wolf snarled at hi%# *e %oved away and sle't at the %outh of the cave#(he ne9t %orning he saw five strange little ani%als ne9t to the she-wolf# (hey
%ade weak little noises but their eyes were not o'en# *e left the cave :uickly# *e had to
find food for the she-wolf# (his ti%e, when he took %eat back to her, she did not snarl
at hi%#Four of the cubs were red, but one was gray# (his gray cub was a fighter# *e
fought his brothers -and sisters %ore than they fought hi%# *e always wanted to
leave the cave and his %other had to sto' hi%#
(hen, after a ti%e, there was no food# *is father did not bring the% any %eat,and his %other had no %ilk# (he cubs cried, but then they sle't#
When the gray cub felt strorig again, he only had one sister# (he other cubswere dead# *is sister sle't all the ti%e# (hen the fire of life in her died too#
ater, the cub;s father died# (he she-wolf knew this because she found his
body in the woods#

between her teeth# *er %outh closed on the long yellow body# (hen she and the
cub ate the ani%al#
After that, the cub went out every day and killed for food# (hen one day
the she-wolf brought ho%e a baby wildcat# (he cub ate it and fell aslee' in thecave ne9t to his %other#
*e woke when she snarled loudly# (he %other wildcat was at the %outh of
the cave# 6he snarled angrily and the hair on the cub;s back stood u'# 3ecause the
%outh of the cave was s%all, the wildcat had to co%e in on her sto%ach# 6he andthe she-wolf fought hard# (he cub fought too and bit the wildcat;s leg# 6he hit hi%
hard but he did not sto' fighting#&n the end, he and his %other killed the wildcat# 3ut after the she did not
%ove# For a week she only left the cave for water# 3ut at the end of the week shecould look for %eat again#
For so%e ti%e the cub could not walk very well, but then he began to look
for %eat with his %other# *e was not afraid of s%all ani%als now# *e could
fight with his %other and kill a large ani%al#*e liked killing other ani%als# *e also liked eating, running, fighting, and
slee'ing# *e liked the life in his body# *e was ha''y in his world#
Chapter 2 White Fang
(he cub ran to the s%all river# *e was heavy with slee' and he wanted to
drink# *e did not look around hi% carefully#
6uddenly, he saw the% under the trees# Five big ani%als sat in front of hi%#(hey did not snarl or show their teeth# (hey looked at hi% and did not %ove#
(hey were dangerous, but the gray cub could not %ove# *e felt very weak ands%all ne9t to the%#
$ne of the% got u' and ca%e to hi%# When he 'ut his hand near the cub,
the cub;s hair stood u'# *e showed his little fangs# (he %an laughed and said=
>Wabam wabisca ip pit tah" 0>ook? (he white fangs?>2(he other %en laughed loudly# (he first %an 'ut his hand near the cub
again# (his ti%e the cub bit it# (he %an hit hi% on the head# (he cub fell and then
cried# (he %en laughed again#(hen the cub heard so%ething# (he &ndians heard it too#(he cub;s %other ran to hi% and snarled loudly at the %en#
>4iche?>said one of the %en#>4iche?>
(he cub;s %other sto ''ed snarli ng and lay down on the ground# Why+
(he cub did not understand# *is %other fought everything?(he %an ca%e to her# *e 'ut his hand on her head, but she did not bite hi%?
(he other %en 'ut their hands on her head and she did not bite the%# (he %en
%ade noises with their %ouths#
>&t is not strange,> one %an said# >*er father was a wolf and her %other was a
dog#>
>6he ran away last year, @ray 3eaver# o you re%e%ber+> said a second %an#
>Bes# 6he ran to the wolves because we could find no %eat for the dogs#>*e 'ut his hand on the cub# (he cub snarled and the hand :uickly hit hi%# (he
cub closed his %outh# (hen the %an stroked the cub;s back and behind his ears#
>*is father is a wolf,> said the %an# >*is fangs are white, so his na%e will be
White Fang# *e is %y dog because 4iche was %y dead brother;s dog#>(he %en %ade %ore %outh noises# (hen @ray 3eaver cut so%e wood fro% a
tree# *e tied 4iche to it with so%e leather# (hen he tied the stick to a s%all tree#After a ti%e, about forty %en, wo%en, and children and %any dogs ca%e
through the trees# (he 'eo'le and dogs carried heavy bags# A s%all boy took 4iche;sstick and walked away with her# White Fang followed her#
(hey walked by the s%all river for a ti%e# (hen they ca%e to the large
Mackenzie aver and the &ndians %ade their ca%' ne9t to it#
White Fang walked around t he ca%' and looked at everything# A youngdog walked slowly to hi%# (his dog, i'-li', did not like other dogs, and he bit White
Fang badly# White Fang
Fang again and again, so White Fang ran back to his niother#(his was the first
of %any fights with i'-li'#Five %inutes later, White Fang left 4iche and looked around the ca%'
again# *e saw @ray 3eaver and went to hi%# @ray 3eaver sat on the ground
near a lot of sticks# Wo%en and children brought @ray 3eaver %ore sticks# (hen
a strange thing ca%e u' fro% the sticks on the ground# &t was the color of the sun#White Fang went near it, and suddenly his nose hurt# *e 7u%'ed away fast and
cried# @ray 3eaver and the others laughed loudly#White Fang ran back to his %other and lay down ne9t to her# *i s nose hu rt
and he wanted to go back to the woods# *e watched the %en in the ca%'# (hey
were large and strong, and they %ade fire? (hey were gods to hi%#
$ne of the &ndians, (hree agles, 'lanned a tri' u' the ac!enie River#3efore he left, @ray 3eaver gave hi% 4iche# 6o one %orning, (hree agles took
4iche onto his boat# (he boat started to %ove u' the river# White Fang 7u%'ed
into the water and swa% after it# *e did not listen to the angry shouts of @ray3eaver# *e wanted his %other#
@ray 3eaver followed hi% in his boat# *e caught White Fang;s neck and
'ulled hi% angrily out of the water# *e hit hi% hard, again and again# White Fang
snarled at hi% angrily# @ray 3eaver hit hi% faster and harder# (hen White Fang felt
very afraid# *e to''ed snarling#@ray 3eaver sto''ed hitting hi%# *e threw hi% into the botto% of the
boat and kicked hi% hard# White Fang suddenly kit angry again and bit @ray
3eaver;s foot#

(his ti%e @ray 3eaver was really angry# *e hit White Fang very hard for a
long ti%e# Again, he threw hi% to the botto% of boat and again he kicked hi%
angrily# (his ti%e White Fang did not bite hi%#
ater, in the night, White Fang re%e%bered his %other and felt sad# *e criedloudly, and @ray 3eaver hit hi% again# After that he only cried :uietly when the
gods were near# 3ut so%eti%es in the woods he cried loudly again# *e stayed in
the ca%' and waited for his %other#
*e was not too sad# ife in the ca%' was interesting because the gods did%any strange things# 3ut the young dog i'-li' hated hi% and often started
fights with hi%# (he other young dogs followed i'-li' and started fights withWhite Fang too#
(hese fights taught hi% so%e i%'ortant lessons# *e learned to stay on hisfeet in a fight# *e also learned to hurt a dog very badly in a very short ti%e# *e
learned to 'ush the dog off his feet and to bite his neck# *e learned these lessons
because he wanted to live# *e had to be faster, %ore intelligent, and %ore dangerous
than the other dogs#$ne day, he killed a dog in a fight# (he &ndians saw hi% and were angry
with hi%# After that, they did not want hi% near the%# (hey shouted at hi%
angrily when they saw hi%#
(his life turned White Fang into a very angry, dangerous ani%al# *elearned only about hate#

for a long ti%e# &n the su%%er, the &ndians could not find any fish and in the winter
they could not find any wild ani%als# (hey ate their leather shoes, and the dogs#
(he old and weak gods died and the other gods cried all the ti%e# 6o%e of the
%ost intelligent dogs understood, and they went into the woods for food# (here,the wolves ate the%#
White Fang also went into the woods# For %onths he was very hungry,
but he always killed so%ething# $ther ani%als wanted to kill hi%, but he could
run faster than the%#arly in the su%%er, he %et i'-li' in the woods# *e was not hungry, but he
snarled at i'-li'# *e 'ushed hi% to the ground and bit his neck hard# (hat was theend of i'-li'#
$ne day, White Fang ca%e to the end of the woods# &n front of hi% he sawthe Mackenzie and a village# &t was the old vfflage, but it was now in a new 'lace#
*e left the woods and went to the village# @ray 3eaver was not there, but
4loo-kooh gave hi% a fish# *e felt ha''y because he was with the gods again#
Chapter 4 The Killer of Dog
When White Fang was al%ost five years old, @ray 3eaver took hi% on a
second tri'# (his ti%e they went down the Mackenzie, across the %ountains anddown the orcu'ine River to the Bukon River# (hey sto''ed in %any villages, and
in each village White Fang fought the dogs# (he dogs often died because they
fought in a different way fro% White Fang#
White Fang liked fighting very :uickly# *e hated being very near anotherani%al because it felt dangerous# *e had to feel free, H.he finished his fights very
fast# 8sually, he won his fightscause the village dogs were slower# 6o%eti%es a dog hurt hi%
I; but these ti%es were accidents# 8sually, he was too fast for the%#
&n the su%%er, @ray 3eaver and White Fang arrived at Fort Bukon# &t was
1!, and there were thousands of 'eo'le in th town# (hese 'eo'le 'lanned to gou' the Bukon to the 4londik because they wanted to find gold#
&n Fort Bukon, White Fang saw white gods for the first ti%e# I s%all nu%ber
of the% lived in the town, and other %en ca% fro% the boats# (hese boatssto''ed in the town two or thre ti%es a week#*e was very afraid of the white gods because they wer stronger than the
&ndians# 3ut he was not afraid of their dog= (hey did not fight well# When they ran
at hi%, he 7u%'ed awa1 (hen he 'ushed the% to the ground and bit the% in the
neck#; was easy#6o%eti%es a dog did not get u' after a fight with White Fang (hen White
Fang left hi% to the &ndian dogs# (hey 7u%'ed J hi% and killed hi%# White Fang
never killed a white god;s do# *e was too intelligent# (he white gods were always
angry whe their dogs died in a fight# (hey hit the &ndian dogs hard wit sticks#
White Fang started these fights easily# When the strange doi left the boat, he
went to the%# (hey were afraid of hi% becau= he was wild# *e was dangerous to
the% and to their gods so thK wanted to fight hi%#After two or three of these fights, the white gods always toe their dogs back to
their boat# (hat was the end of the ga%e wi the dogs fro% that boat#
After a ti%e, these fights were the only thing in White FanL life# @ray 3eaver
had no work for hi% because he was too bui *e sold leather shoes to the whitegods and he was now rich#
White Fang liked the fights, but he was not ha''y# *e did n love an ani%alor a god, because no ani%al or god loved hii verybody hated hi%#
(he white %en in Fort Bukon did not like the white %en fro% theboats# (hese %en were fro% the south, and were weak# (he %en fro% Fort Bukon
liked the dog fights because the weak %en;s dogs died#
$ne %an liked the fights %ore than the other %en# *e watched each
fight# 6o%eti%es when a 6outhland dog died, he 7 shouted ha''ily# *e wantedvery %uch to buy White Fang#
(his %an;s na%e was 3eauty 6%ith# *is na%e was >3eauty> & because he
was very ugly and s%all# *e had large yellow teeth and dirty yellow eyes# (he thin
hair on his head and face was also 7 dirty yellow#*e tried to %ake friends with White Fang but White Fangl hated hi%# *e
always showed his teeth to hi% and %oved away# &
(hen 3eauty 6%ith visited @ray 3eaver in his ca%'# 3eauty? 6%ith and
@ray 3eaver talked for along ti%e# @ray 3eaver did? not want to sell White Fang#White Fang was his strongest dog# 3ut 3eauty 6%ith knew @ray 3eaver# *e
visited hi% often# ach? ti%e he took a black bottle with hi%, under his coat# @ray3eaver began to want %ore and %ore bottles# &n a short ti%e all his7 %oney
went on the%# (hen 3eauty 6%ith talked to hi% again about White Fang# *e
wanted to 'ay for White Fang in bottles# not dollars# (his ti%e @ray 3eaver
listened#>Bou catch hi%, you take hi%,> he said#
After two days, 3eauty 6%ith told @ray 3eaver,> $ou catch hi%#;
(hat evening, White Fang ca%e :uietly into the ca%'# (he bad white godwas not there# @ray 3eaver ca%e over to hi% anc7 tied so%e leather round hisneck# *e sat down ne9t to Whit Fang and drank fro% his bottle#
After an hour, 3eauty 6%ith walked into the ca%'# *e stood? over White
Fang# White Fang snarled u' at hi%# A hand %oved down to his head#
6uddenly, White Fang tried to bite it# (he hand 7u%'ed back# @ray 3eaver hitWhite Fang on the head#
3eauty 6%ith went away and ca%e back with a large stick# @ray 3eaver
gave hi% the leather and 3eauty 6%ith walked away & fro% White Fang# (he leather

bad god# 3eauty 6%ith did not %ove away# *e hit White Fang hard with his stick#
White Fang fell to the ground# 3eauty 6%ith 'ulled the leather again, and this ti%e
White Fang followed hi%#&n the town, 3eauty 6%ith tied hi% with the leather and went to bed# White
Fang waited an hour# (hen he began to bite the leather# When he was free he went
back to @ray 3eaver#
&n the %orning, @ray 3eaver gave hi% to 3eauty 6%ith again# 3eauty 6%ith hithi% very hard with the stick# *e en7oyed hurting hi%#
(hen he took White Fang to the town again#(his ti%e he tied hi% with a stick#&n the night, White Fang began to bite the stick# & After %any hours, he bit through it
and was free# *e went back? to @ray 3eaver# *e could not leave hi%#3eauty 6%ith ca%e for hi% again the ne9t %orning# *e hitl hi% harder than
before# When he finished,White Fang was very? sick# *e could not see and he could
not walk easily# *e followedL 3eauty 6%ith back to the town#
@ray 3eaver said nothing to 3eauty 6%ith because White 1 Fang was not hisdog now# After a short ti%e, he left Fort Bukon for the Mackenzie#
Chapter ! The Great Fight
When the first snows began to fall, 3eauty 6%ith took White Fang on a boat
u' the Bukon to awson# *e called White Fang >(he 4iller Wolf> and showed hi% to
'eo'le for %oney# When White Fang sle't, 'eo'le woke hi% with a stick# (hey wanted
to see an angry wolf#White rang was very angry, tie hated every angry and everybody# *e hated
3eauty 6%ith because he hurt hi% all the ti%e# 3eauty 6%ith wanted an angry wolfbecause he wanted a fighter#
6o%eti%es, at night, 3eauty 6%ith took White Fang into the woods outside the
town# &n the %orning, a lot of 'eo'le and a dog arrived# White Fang fought the dog#
8sually, he killed hi%# *e was a better fighter than the other dogs#After a ti%e, the fights sto''ed because 3eauty 6%ith could not find dogs for
the%# (hen, in the s'ring, he suddenly took hi% to a fight# &t was a fight with a very
strange dog#(his dog was short and heavy# (he 'eo'le shouted to hi%, >@o to hi%,Cherokee? at hi%?>
3ut Cherokee did not really want to fight# (hen a %an began to stroke the
dog;s body fro% its botto% to its head# 6uddenly, Cherokee felt angry and he began
to run to White Fang#White Fang :uickly 7u%'ed on hi% and bit hi% behind his ear# (he dog did
not snarl# *e turned and followed White Fang# Again and again White Fang 7u%'ed
on Cherokee and bit hi%# Again and again Cherokee followed hi%# *e 'lanned to do
so%ething, but what+ White Fang could not understand hi%# And he could not bite
his neck below his head# Cherokee was too short, and his head was too large#
Again and again White Fang tried to 'ush Cherokee onto the ground, but
Cherokee was too short and heavy# (hen White Fang 'ushed too hard and fell to theground# Cherokee bit into his neck# White Fang 7u%'ed u' and ran# Cherokee;s teeth
stayed in his neck# White Fang hated this# *e hated being near the other dog# *e ran
around and around#
*e only sto''ed when he was tired# Cherokee 'ushed hi% Onto his back andsat on to' of hi%# *is tee th did not leave White Fang;s neck# 6lowly, he %oved his
teeth u' White Fang;s neck# 3eauty 6%ith began to kick White Fang angrily#6uddenly, a tall young %an 'ushed his way through the 'eo'le to 3eauty 6%ith#
*e was very angry and his gray eyes were cold# *e hit 3eauty 6%ith in the face#3eauty 6%ith fell to the ground#
>Matt, co%e here,> the young %an called#
A shorter, older %an went to hi% and they tried to 'ull Cherokee off White
Fang#>Bou can;t 'ull hi% off, 6cott,> said Matt# >We have to o'en PF his %outh#>
6cott took out his gun and 'ushed it between Cherokee;s teeth# (hen he
slowly o'ened the dog;s %outh and Matt 'ulled White Fang;s neck out fro% the dog;s
teeth#White Fang tried to get u', but his legs were too weak# *e fell back into the
snow#
3eauty 6%ith got u' slowly and ca%e to hi%# *e looked hi%#
>Matt, how %uch does a good sled-dog cost+> 6cott asked#>(hree hundred dollars#>
>And how %uch for this dog now+>>*alf of that#>
6cott turned to 3eauty 6%ith#
>id you hear that+ &;% going to take your dog, and &;% going to give you a
hundred and fifty dollars for hi%#>*e took out the %oney#
>&;% not selling,> said 3eauty 6%ith#
>$h yes, you are,> said 6cott# >3ecause &;% buying# *ere;s your %oney#>3eauty 6%ith 'ut his hands behind hi% and %oved away# 6cott ran after hi%#>(ake the %oney or &;ll hit you again,> he said#
>All right,> 3eauty 6%ith said :uickly# >3ut &;% going to tell & the 'olice in

White Fang# White Fang snarled angrily at Matt;s sled+ dogs#
>*e;s a wolf, and we can;t change hi%,> 6cott said to Matt#>Wolf or dog, he can 'ull a sled,> said Matt# >ook at these? lines on his
back#>
>Can he be a sled-dog again+> 6cott asked# *e was interested in this idea#
>Maybe# et;s see# 8ntie hi%#>6cott looked at hi%#
"$ou untie hi%?> he said#6o Matt took a heavy stick and went to White Fang# *e untied hi%#
White Fang slowly walked away fro% hi%# *e could77 not understand these gods#(hey did not hit hi%#
6cott went into the house and ca%e out with so%e %eat# *e threw it to
White Fang# White Fang 7u%'ed away fro% it and looked at it#
$ne of Matt;s dogs 7u%'ed for the %eat# (hen White Fang 7u%'ed on hi%and bit hi%# (he dog fell to the ground# Matt rat%to hi%, but he was too late# (he
dog :uickly died#
>We;ll have to kill hi%,> 6cott said#
>on;t kill hi% now, Mr# 6cott,> Matt answered# >Maybe he;ll change#>>& don;t want to kill hi%,> 6cott said# >& want to be nice to hi%#>
*e walked to White Fang and started to talk to hi% :uietly#
*e %oved his hand near White Fang# 6uddenly, White Fang bit it 6cott
cried out and White Fang %oved away#Matt ran into the house and ca%e out with a gun# White Fang began to snarl
loudly at hi%#>on;t kill hi%? *e knows that guns are dangerous?> 6cott said# >*e;s very
intelligent#>
>All right,> Matt said# *e 'ut the gun down and White Fang sto''ed snarling#
>Bou;re right, Mr# 6cott# *e knows that a gun can kill,> he said#(he ne9t day, 6cott sat outside the house# White Fang watched hi%# 6cott
began to s'eak# White Fang snarled, but 6cott did not %ove# *e s'oke :uietly for a
long ti%e# White Fang sto''ed snarling and listened to the sound of the god#After a long ti%e, the god got u' and went into the house# When he ca%e out,he sat down in the sa%e 'lace# *e had so%e %eat in his hand# White Fang;s ears stood
u' and he looked at the %eat# &t was good %eat, but he did not go near it# *e was
afraid of the god#
(hen the god threw the %eat on the snow at White Fang;s feet# *e s%elledit carefully but he did not look at it# *e watched the god# & knew it? (his wolf is a dog# ook at hi%?> said Matt#
White Fang felt better because he was ha''y again# A day later he left the
house and went outside# (he sled-dogs 7u%'ed on hi% and he fought the%ha''ily# *e was well and strong and there was life in hi% again?

6cott and Matt ca%e and went all day# 6o%eti%es 6cott 'ut things in the bags#White Fang could not eat# (hat night he cried loudly outside the house# (he ne9t
day he felt very afraid# *e followed 6cott everywhere#(wo &ndians arrived and took 6cott;s bags# 6cott ca%e to the door of the
house and called White Fang inside# *e stroked white Fang behind his ears and
s'oke to hi% sadly#

Fro% the river ca%e the sound of a boat# Matt and 6cott got u' and left the
house :uickly# (hey shut the front door and the back door, and they went down to the

White Fang cried loudly in the house behind the%#
$n the boat the two %en said goodbye# 6uddenly, Matt saw; White Fang? *ewas on the boat?
