We created this collection of new, easy songs toenergize beginning players who want to play tunes thatsound good to their ears. Our great accompanimenttracks will make those early weeks of recorder lots morefun. And if you are using a reward system with yourrecorder method, like Recorder Karate, this will giveyou a way to spend more time on easier tunes as yourplayers gain more confidence.
Thunder HawkBold and brassy, this rockin’ tune might be the
theme to an adventure series, or the music behind a bigscene. It features the notes B and A, and the melody isjust repetitive enough to make it the easiest song in thecollection. As with many tunes in the collection, weprovide four tracks: full performance, long and short;and accompaniment only, long and short. The shortversions are handy if you are testing for belts or otherrewards. Rock on!
ACcelerateIf you are one of the many teachers who like to
start recorder classes with A and C, this is the tune foryou. It’s a lean modern rock in style, and it is simpleand quite repetitive, though the tracks make itinteresting for the players every time.
In this case, the tune is short enough that we havejust one length for the tune in the recordings provided.
Bumblebee BopEven though this tune only features the note B, we
have made it the third tune in the collection because itrequires more rhythm reading skills including a nicemix of quarter notes, half notes, and rests.
The song is a big band swing version ofRimsky-Korsakov’s famous “Flight Of The Bumblebee.”It is available here in two lengths, including a shortversion for testing if you so desire.
Chillaxin’The title says it all for this laid back rock tune. It
is a perfect first tune to feature B, A, and G. Most ofthe melody is stepwise half notes, only transitioning toquarter notes at the end of the song. There are twoversions of this one, one longer and a short one foroptional testing.
Flutter By, ButterflyThis lovely ballad in 3/4 meter is a great way to work
on legato playing and breath control. Start by playingtwo measures in a breath, then move on to four barphrasing, being sure that the last note is held full value.
The recording features our great rhythm sectionplus a rich string section. For the second time throughthe song, our solo violinist, the amazing Phil Palermo, plays a beautiful high obbligato solo over the song.
Again, there are two versions of the song, one longer, and one shorter for testing or shorter performances.
Luna KahunaMany of you have known and used the old French
folk song “Au Clair de la Lune” with your recorderclasses, but you’ve never heard it like this! John has setit cleverly as a surf rock style tune, and it’s lots of funfor your young players. He has definitely put new life inthis favorite old BAG tune.
While there are two different sets of recordings forthe tune, in this case, one version is just a bit fasterthan the other. As your players get the hang of it, theycan move from one to the other. Both are short enoughto use for testing.
Lightspeed CaterpillarJohn and Paul have built a cool roller coaster of a
tune, complete with sound effects. Based on BAG, thisfun-loving rock tune spends much of its melodic timegoing up and down like the aforementioned coaster, andit’s built completely out of half notes and whole notes.
As with many of the tunes, there are two versions, long and short, but for performances, we highlyrecommend the longer version as the arrangementbuilds to an exciting ending, and that’s harder toaccomplish with the shorter one. Feel free to let yourkids whoop it up at the end with the coaster riders onthe recording.
Renaissance Circle DanceFor the first addition of the note C to BAG thus far
learned, Paul has done a nice setting of Gervaise’s“Bransle de Champagne,” a stately circle dance. For therecording, we have assembled a fine period ensemblefeaturing lute and strings. There are both long andshort recordings for your convenience.
Also included are optional percussion parts: one forhand drum, and one for finger cymbals. Feel free to addyour own ideas for other percussion instruments.
Juba JumpOur last song is an infectious world beat rock
setting adapted from the folk song “Juba.” Most of thetune is spent moving through A, B, and C, just settlingon G at the end. It’s a great song to use for classes thatstart with A and C to move toward the new tones.Again, we provide longer and shorter recordings to giveyou options.12

LET US HEAR FROM YOU!
B A DANCING ZOMBIEby Paul Jennings
For this piece, we think we havecaught the flavor of a familiar tune thatstudents might know, and we created a new,
tongue-in-cheek version that they will loveto play, while they only need to know B
and A to join in. Aside from learning a second note, this song also discusses playing staccato andsyncopation. (from MUSIC K-8 Vol. 22, No. 1)
FRODO’S BAGby M.C. Handel
Your beginning recorder players will think that theyare playing very cool, special music with this “MiddleEarth Rock” original that takes B, A, and G to amystical and imaginative faraway place. Students whoare familiar with a certain popular movie and book willlove it all the more. (from MUSIC K-8 Vol. 13, No. 1)
AN OLDE ENGLISH CAROLarr. M.C. Handel
Using the notes G, A, B, and C, this recorder tuneis an old English carol (really) from the 18th century. It’s original title is “Gloucestershire Wassail.” (from MUSIC K-8 Vol. 12, No. 2)
B A MARCHING MONSTERby Veektor BeanzAndFrankzensteinarr. Paul Jennings
With this recorder piece, we are transported into acool, old black-and-white monster movie, completewith theremin and eerie sound effects. The recorderplayers only need to play B and A, but they haveplenty to do. There’s even an opportunity for youryoung monsters to march! Yes, mahster... have a greattime with this horrifying new work! (from MUSIC K-8 Vol. 20, No. 1)
CHESTERby William Billingsarr. Paul Jennings
Our arrangement of this William Billings classic begins with a rich hymn-likesetting that evolves into a march. The first sopranopart requires the full C scale. The second sopranopart requires only G, A, B, and C, and can be playedby itself with the tracks, or with the other recorderparts. The optional alto recorder part is ideal forstudents just learning to play that instrument. (from MUSIC K-8 Vol. 21, No. 5)
ECHO CAROLarr. Paul Jennings
This old carol, also known as “While By MySheep,” is arranged for two soprano recorders and oneoptional alto recorder, but it can be played by just yourbeginning recorder students. The orchestralarrangement is full of contrasts which are fun for yourstudents, too. Notes used: G, A, B, and C. (from RECORDER CLASSROOM Vol. 1, No. 2)

B A BLACK BELT by Paul Jennings
This versatile piece offers you agreat way to introduce your
beginning players to the notes B and A.In addition, there is a second soprano
recorder part that can be used with moreadvanced students. And as its name suggests, it wouldbe a great addition to your Recorder Karate program!(from MUSIC K-8 Vol. 19, No. 1)

ENTRANCE OF THE DRAGON RIDERSby Paul Jennings
Make a powerful statement with thispiece that will work all year long withbeginning recorder students, olderstudents, and even beginning altorecorder players. They’ll enjoy thisceremonial march and probably developtheir own version of the story behind this song that usesthe notes G, A, and B for beginners, and adds low E formore of a challenge. (from RECORDER CLASSROOM Vol. 1, No. 1)
