From the desk of the President…….
Our Indian summer has finally turned with a vengeance to winter but we were blessed to have the
great weather for our shows at Easter. And what a wonderful weekend it was! Our two judges, Mrs
Dianna Spavin (UK) and Mr Raymond Yurick from Canada presided over a great entry and
congratulations to all the winners. But of course no shows would have happened without our
incredibly hardworking and dedicated committee. Their commitment and passion is legendary and I
thank them from the bottom of my heart.
I also commend to you the committee decision to call for nomination of conformation judges from
the membership. The Club is not just the Committee – the Club is each and every member and your
views and opinions are so important to the successful functioning of the Club. This is just one way
that the Committee decided that the members could be better included.
Winter also means the education season and I would also like to invite you to come along to our two
events – Dogs on Show and the Sydney Dog Lovers Expo. Details are included elsewhere in this
newsletter but it is a chance to educate the public about our beautiful breed and about purebred
dogs in general. With the continued rise of the anti-dog lobby it is so very important that we use
every available opportunity to promote our best friends, our sport and the values of purebred versus
puppy mill.
Stay warm and remember - Whippets are the best hot water bottles but only if they leave space in
the bed for you!!

25th March 2016 Critique – Judge
Mr R Yurick (Canada)
When I received the email to inquire about my availability to judge your specialty and then again to
let me know I won the vote, I was overcome with joy. No greater honour can be bestowed on a
breeder judge than the privilege to judge the breed they are so passionate about. I will take great
pride in boasting that one of my first appointments aboard was for your splendid Specialty. I would
like to take this opportunity to thank the members of The Whippet Club of NSW for this bucket list
assignment. Thank you to an incredible Show Committee for hosting me and putting on a
tremendous event that drew a beautiful entry from near and far. Thank you all for the tremendous
experience and the most enjoyable day.
For me Form plus Function equals Type; a Whippet’s type is two parts; their unique silhouette (a
combination of smooth continuous curves coming together to create a dog of medium/moderate
size that possesses great balance and symmetry, power, agility, athleticism and elegance) and their
ability to cover ground with a minimum amount of effort (open, easy and effortless side gait). Other
important breed specific attributes I place in high regard are a large and dark oval eye, strong under
jaw, proper front fill, a strong sloping pastern, correct length of leg in balance with body depth and
overall length, well let down/short strong hocks. ALL EXTREMES to be faulted, basically anything that
throws off the harmonious balance of a moderate well-made dog. In a large quality entry as this was,
it literally came down to fine points in the end of many of the large classes to separate my
placements. It was a privilege to judge such a lovely entry, a responsibility I did not take lightly and
thank all the exhibitors and owners for coming out and spending a day of celebrating the Whippet
breed with me.
Every assignment for me is a learning experience and this quality entry gave me so much to assess
and evaluate. I love your size (height) in both sexes, in North America our size puts boys at the top of
the standard and male whippets are starting to look like a separate breed. I appreciate your
dedication to preserving shape, lovely curves not overdone. Your hock length is beautiful, short and
strong, very evident in the number of wonderful movers from the side. Areas some may wish to
watch , but not reflected in the whole entry are , eye shape and size , ear placement and type of
leather, fronts set on to far forward , poor pasterns and feet . I truly embraced the entire entry for
the differences in style and influences the Australian Whippet had to offer compared to a North
American style Whippet I am use to.

Outstanding bitches is all I could think about, in the end the 2 bitches with the most similar outlines
and incredible open easy side gait won the day.
My Best in Speciality Bitch I think she could be shown anywhere in the world and do extremely well,
she can only be labelled true classic quality from the tip of her nose to her tail
My Runner Up Specialty Dog excelled in masculine elegance, and amazing effortless side gait,
2 things I believe need to be awarded
Thank you again to everyone for your splendid hospitality and spending the day with me and
allowing me to enjoy your wonderful whippets, truly an honour.

amazing time touring and judging. Hopefully I'll be back soon!

Meet the Andrew’s
I have been asked to write about the story of our two Calahorra Whippets .
Our story began in 2011 when after years of owning many assorted breeds of pet dogs ...we
had the great and good fortune of acquiring our first Whippet Calahorra Lunchtime Legend .
Fondly known as Willy in our family and anyone who has the good fortune to meet and know
him.
So there we where …...one adorable pup at 14 weeks with a very uncoordinated and
inexperienced beginner at Obedience school . We went to class as I wanted to train him to be
a well behaved pet. From the moment we went to lessons I was hooked. I can honestly say I
was blessed to have and still have some fantastic mentors in our training career and of course
admit this was the only reason for our continued achievements in the Obedience ring . Plus a
lot of grit determination on my side.
Willy was brilliant always but used to occasionally in his second year of life "nick off" and
run and run ...people would laugh in amazement at his speed while my heart broke…..
sometimes it would take over an hour to catch him! Of course he always completely
disrupted the whole class as all the dogs were only focused on this crazy dog, with his
weeping human desperately trying to stop him zooming about like a F1-11 jet plane ! The
very last time he did it, it was a very hot day and he ran till he collapsed into my arms and
nearly died from heat exhaustion! He spent a week in hospital and came out with a whole
new attitude.
My darling Willy passed through CCD quickly and Novice with the ease of a showman . We
were always met with friendly but amused surprise from most judges which in the Obedience
world has grown into fond respect and continued interest. Everyone has always been so kind
and encouraging at every level .We were blissfully unaware of the next chapter in our
training life that was about to begin. My Husband Nigel wanted his own dog . We had shared
Willy as an "only child". He was such a great support to me as my coach during the week
when I wasn’t under instruction from our mentors and I really think Nigel wanted to train his
own dog. We were both old worn out Dressage riders and Nige was a good rider and I knew
he would be a good dog trainer.
So along came our second darling Calahorra The Rockford Peaches ...she was 5 months old
and was looking for a home as she hadn’t worked out in her show career as her ears had the
occasional habit of sticking up like a jack Rabbit! Wendy her breeder knew we would be an
ideal and loving home for her ... So here we were.Willy was 2 years old and doing well in his
training and now there were two!!
Nige and Peaches are a strong team. They began and never looked back. Peaches is devoted
to him and is smart, smart, smart! They zoomed through CCD and Novice, getting their
Novice Title at Bermagui in February and will be competing in Open level very soon .
Willy acquired his Open Title in February as well and is training for UD. I always joked that
Nigel and Peaches would over take us and you know I bet they will! But not for lack of
trying!!
We are approached at every competition by people that are amazed that we are doing
Obedience with Whippets and how clever must we be ! We just reply they are just dogs (of
course the most beautiful and clever dogs we know) but to us they are no different from a
training point of view and we wouldn’t ever have another breed .We are also very keen
walkers and daily we are stopped by the public In awe of their beauty, impeccable behaviour
while we sit and enjoy a coffee or meal and their strength of character.
We often joke that we should wear T shirts with Whippet PR on them! We continue to train
and strive for the top in obedience and we both know our wonderful two will make it .
Obedience training is a challenge with any dog but why not do it with the most beautiful dog
in the world!
