Beverly Hills School UpdatesMeasure E Bond: The Board of Education voted 3-2 to issue the third series ofMeasure E school building bonds for $76 million. The bonds will be entirely Cur-rent Interest Bonds (CIBs) with a repayment ratio of 1.25-to-1, which averages outto a property tax increase to $65 per 100,000 of assessed value. Board VPHoward Goldstein, who voted yes along with Boardmembers Lisa Korbatov andLewis Hall, underscored that the average property owner would pay a “mere”$195 per year over the life of the bond. The decision to forgo issuing any CapitalAppreciation Bonds (CABs) on this coming draw is good news for a communitythat was hoodwinked into believing they wouldn’t see any increase in propertytaxes. CABs can have a 10-to-1 repayment ratio that would unfairly burden fu-ture property owners.

Building Schools: Last Friday, the Board of Education gave direction to HMC Ar-chitects to move ahead with developing full plans for the redevelopment at ElRodeo and Hawthorne at a total estimated cost for both of $147 million. Bothschools are poised to begin reconstruction next year.

New Principals: On June 30, the Board of Education is expected to approve thehire of new principals for Beverly Hills High School and Hawthorne, in additionto a new BHHS athletic director and a new chief of facilities. “We feel realstrongly about the candidates we have [and] we’re very happy,” said interim Su-perintendent Steve Kessler. Stay tuned!

Paysinger vs. BHUSD: The Board of Education approved a $685,000 settlementwith Beverly Hills High School Principal Carter Paysinger, whose last day withthe district is June 30. The settlement means that his lawsuit against the district al-leging discrimination will not move forward. It also means that Paysinger will nothave to further address his failure to report payments made to the Beverly HillsSports Academy, which he owns, on his legally-required Statement of EconomicInterests Form 700 while he was BHHS principal. “The district did not admit guiltand our (insurance) carrier is paying two-thirds of the cost,” Board President Bri-an Goldberg said. Paysinger’s attorney Reed Aljian did not respond to a requestfor comment.

Creative Criminal: Former Beverly Hills Unified School District employeeTapscott-Bazzi, who was arrested on Sept. 12 by BHPD on the belief she hadstolen $21,000 from the BHUSD, entered a no contest plea last Thursday in courtand has not been convicted of a felony - grand theft. She was placed on formalfelony probation, given credit for the days she spent in custody, ordered to com-plete 180 days of community service, and ordered to pay the BHUSD $21,405in restitution. “It is sad that an employee felt the need to steal from our studentsand staff,” Board of Education Brian Goldberg said.

Working out of theirNew Jersey garage, they wereblessed with the King Midastouch. Nor much time elapsedbefore they wooed MervGriffin into selling them theWheel Of Fortune ($50,000 in1983) and Jeopardy, those goldmines extraordinaire amonggame shows.

Michael and Roger soondiscovered Oprah, launchingher into international stardomand the billionaire strato-sphere. Dr. Phil followed, asdid Rachael Ray, both daytimehits.

The Midas touch stayedwith them. Kingmakers theywere, amassing more than$100 million dollars in annualrevenue with their behemothempire, while their roster oftalk and game shows account-ed for more than 100 milliondaily viewers.

An avid sports guy,Michael became part owner ofthe New Jersey Nets, NewJersey Devils, and the NewYork Yankees.

Celebrating Michael’ssuccess and friendships withencomiums were Gov. JerryBrown; Whoopi Goldberg; anhilarious Jeff Wald; BobShapiro; Ted Danson; JonSheinberg; AnnaRose King;musicmakers Kenny G;Michael Bolton; David Foster;Jimmy and Donnie Demers.

In the crowd were Bobby

“There are people in thistown who would die to put acrowd like this together,”acknowledged the GrandVizier of television, NormanLear, who flew in the nightbefore from New York. Duringhis return flight to Los Angeles,he was reflecting on the Kingdynasty’s Irish Catholic faith, and curious about being invit-ed by Jena and Michael toyoung Jesse’s briss (the reli-gious Hebrew circumcisionceremony). Wasn’t the GrandVizier kidding?

“You boys can sell any-thing, so get out there and getgoing,” Michael often men-tioned that mom Lucille neverstopped encouraging them. They were handed the reins toKing World Productions fromtheir dad Charles, wholaunched the company’s syndi-cation business with reruns ofThe Little Rascals and OurGang series.

Many partak-ing of the Skirball’s deliciousand healthy buffet supper.

The New York Timesnoted that Michael “consideredhimself a champion of film andtelevision, not unlike the studiomoguls of yesteryear ...”

“I measure myself against– and this is going to soundegotistical ... Louis B. Mayer,Sam Goldwyn, Jack Warner,David O. Selnick, Mike Todd.

“Those people createdthis industry, and unfortunatelyit’s now run by a lot of peoplewho aren’t passionate about it.They’re not filmmakers, they’renot television people. They’relawyers and accountants andbusinessmen. We have a pas-sion for our company and thisindustry. We’ve created majorstars, and we did it like the oldstudio system.”

They exhausted thepraiseworthy vocabulary inWebster’s Dictionary theevening when King WorldProductions’ chairmanMichael King was honored.

Bill Clinton, OprahWinfrey, Elton John, SugarRay Leonard and other lumi-naries were describing the lateMichael’s visionary genius, business acumen, and hisloyal undying friendship at theSkirball Center tribute.Michael lost his life to pneu-monia this month at CedarsSinai Medical Center.

Orchestrated by BenBourgeois and Michael’sbeloved wife Jena, withdaughters Ali, Audrey, sonTeddy enriching the Fridayevening with their remarks. Asdid Michael’s brothers Richieand Robert during the remem-

brance that packed Skirball’sHersher Hall.

After the Bagpipersplayed Amazing Grace,Monsignor Lloyd Torgerson ofour St. Monica’s CatholicChurch (the parish founded in1886!) introduced the eveningwith prayers and a eulogy.

The speakers laudedMichael’s unparalled enthusi-asm, kindness, generosity toschools and parks and hospi-tals, his rock ‘n’ roll spunk, life-long camaraderie, and zest forjust plain fun.

Eloquent Andy Friendly, former president of King WorldProductions, recollected thatMichael and big brother RogerKing became notorious forhosting the best of the bestNAPTE convention parties. Noexpenses spared, and hiringtop-drawer entertainers to per-form in New Orleans, LasVegas, etc.

By Victoria TalbotThe design awards season

kicked off last week with the45th annual Los Angeles Archi-tectural Awards hosted by theLos Angeles Business Councilat The Beverly Hilton.

Over 600 building and de-sign professionals came to hear2014 Pritzker ArchitecturePrize winner Shigeru Ban de-liver the keynote address.Known for his minimalist de-signs made of non-traditionalmaterials, the Japanese archi-tect also constructs inexpen-sive emergency housing fordisaster victims from recycledpaper material.

Notably, Beverly Hills wasrecognized for two projects, confirming the City’s heritageof fine architecture and design.

The ever-changing land-scape within Beverly Hills at-tracts many of the world’s finestarchitects, continuously grow-ing the City’s exceptional ar-chitectural heritage.

Among the hundreds ofnominations, three-dozen de-sign teams were recognized, including three inside BeverlyHills.

In the category of DesignConcept, 8600 Wilshire wasrecognized for the “mountain

village” feeling. A mixed-usebuilding with ground-level re-tail, the village hovers abovethe street cloaked in a distinc-tive shroud of green drought-resistant ivy. Condos, town-homes and villas of glass sur-round a shared courtyard. Thebuilding design reflects MADArchitect founder Ma Yansong’sphilosophy of creating neigh-borhood in a model of urbandensity.

Also winning for DesignConcept is the Academy ofMotion Picture Arts and Sci-ences by Renzo Piano BuildingWorkshop with Executive Ar-chitect Gensler. Designed byPritzker Prize-winning archi-tect Renzo Piano, the newAcademy incorporates andreimagines the restoredWilshire May Company build-ing, adding six stories of exhi-bition space, theaters, educa-tion studios, special eventspaces and conservation areaswith the addition of a café andstore.

The building contains amuseum with traditional the-aters and a new kind of spacewhich envelopes the viewer infilm, erasing the separation be-tween the viewer and the envi-ronment.

The Gores Group Head-quarters design by architectBelzberg Architects Group is acomplete reconstruction of a1960s building. With the addi-tion of a new garage androoftop lounge, upgrades wereneeded in mechanical, struc-tural and electrical work.

The resulting structure is adouble-skin façade with cus-tom slumped safety glass andCNC milled stone skin with anundulating roof canopy. Atnight, the fantastical light playilluminates the building fromwithin the glowing skin.

Located at a busy intersec-tion, the cladding systemshields the building from noiseand reduces heat gain betweenthe envelope.

Other winners include sev-eral water-wise projects recog-nized with the Department ofWater and Power CommunityImpact Award Landscape De-sign Competition for residen-tial, commercial and industrialarchitecture.

The Grand Prize wasawarded for the HollyhockHouse, city of Los Angeles Bu-reau of Engineering. The resi-dence, designed by FrankLloyd Wright, is a NationalHistoric Landmark and nomi-

nated as aWorld Her-itage site, ex-emplifying theenduring ar-chetype of in-door-outdoorliving that hasbecome so rel-evant to LosAngeles today.

Beverly Hills was one of thecharter cities that started theMWD.” he said

McDonnell explained thatbecause the water coming fromthe L.A. aqueduct was insuffi-cient to feed Southern Califor-nia’s growing population, sev-eral cities came together tobuild infrastructure to bringwater from the upper ColoradoRiver and from the Sierra snow-pack to their districts.

A “mega-drought” is de-teremined when there nolonger is a Sierra snowpack

“We don’t have water,”McDonnell said. “Less rainfall, higher temperatures and nosnow is a mega-drought.”

In the past several years,Southern California has addedinfrastructure to conserve andrecycle water, he explained as“putting water in the bank.”

In just one year, however, half of the the 2.7 million-acrefeet of water reserves stored in2012 haves been used up.

Because the state’s volun-tary water conservation did notwork, California Gov. JerryBrown asked the State WaterResources Control Board to getinvolved.

State-mandated water de-livery cutbacks mean memberagencies must ask their users tocut back accordingly.

The new “normal,” saidMcDonnell, means Californiahas less water.

Thus, said Pamela Berstlerof Green Gardens Group (G3),“Putting water on ornamentalgrass is a poor use of the re-source.”

Beverly Hills has a cutbackof 32-percent on water use.

“Seventy-percent of water

use is on landscape,” saidBerstler.

Berstler advocated creatingwater-wise gardens that “createsoil sponges.” A cocktail ofcompost, living mulch and cli-mate-appropriate plants keepsthe soil alive by retaining waterthat is then used in the dry sea-son.

Rocks, asphalt and artifi-cial turf “make dry conditionsdryer,” she said, and “createsdesertification.”

On July 1, the City of Bev-erly Hills will launch the Gar-den Gurus Program, subsidiz-ing $175 of the $225 cost for aG3 consultant to come to thehome of any Beverly Hills cus-tomer to assess their gardens. On the Tuesday, the City Coun-cil is expected to approve aDrought Tolerant GardenHandbook prepared by G3.

Ryan Hudson, manager ofPioneer Hardware, explainedthat there are gadgets designedto decrease flows, plug leaks, and cut down on water usage.“It’s so simple. Change theshowerhead. Seal a leak withTeflon. Throw a brick in the toi-let tank. Either you don’t havethe right stuff or it doesn’t workright,” he said.

Former Beverly Hills May-or Dr. Chuck Aronberg alsospoke, advocating against theuse of artificial turf. But Aron-berg disagrees with the expertson turf replacement.

“Turf takes away pollutantsand emits oxygen,” he said.“Save water inside the house.”

The City currently has finesin place for outdoor wateringviolators. And on Tuesday, theCouncil will further discuss us-age penalties, in addition todiscussing pools and spas, arti-ficial turf and the appealsprocess for violations.

Art By Holocaust Survivor MariaAbrams On Display At LAMOTH

“Early and Late Memories:The Art of Maria Frank Abrams”will open Sunday at the LosAngeles Museum of theHolocaust (LAMOTH), 100 S.The Grove Dr. in Pan PacificPark.

A survey of the Holocaust-inspired art by survivor MariaFrank Abrams (1924-2013), theexhibit opens with a receptionat 1 p.m., which will includetalks by curator MatthewKangas and the artist’s son,Edward Abrams, a human rightslawyer living in Jerusalem.

Born in Hungary in 1924,Abrams survived the Auschwitz-Birkenau and Bergen-Belsencamps, but 33 members of herfamily perished. She immigrat-ed to the U.S. in 1948 and stud-ied art at the University ofWashington. She lived for manyyears in Seattle, inspired by thelandscapes; and Abrams’ workis currently on display in muse-ums including the Seattle ArtMuseum and Yad Vashem.

LAMOTH’s show includes16 paintings, drawings, printsand photo-collages from privatecollections representing theartist’s earliest and latest expres-sions. Torn between depictingthe Holocaust and celebrating

the beauty and light of her post-war home in Seattle, Abramsalternately embraced and de-nied the impact of her WWIIexperiences on her art. Includ-ed in the exhibit are four photo-collages commissioned bySeattle’s Nordic Heritage Mus-eum, when Abrams was hon-ored at the museum’s annualRaoul Wallenberg Dinner. Thephoto-collages depict four fam-ily members who perished andemploy family archival materialincluding photographs, post-cards and letters.

At a time when few wereinterested in hearing about theHolocaust, Abrams grappledwith confronting her memoriesand adapting to American cul-ture To do this, she also madeprints, murals, mosaics, anddesigned sets for the first pro-duction of the new SeattleOpera, among other theatricaldesigns, costumes and sets.

The LAMOTH exhibit, which runs through Monday,Aug. 31, is accompanied by a138-page full-color volume,Kangas’ Burning Forest: The Artof Maria Abrams.

Malibu Clothes at 259 S. Bev-erly Dr. said, laughing. “Hewas a regular customer of mydad’s for quite a while.”

Visits from Ali, the self-pro-claimed “Greatest of All Time”were a regular occurrence backin those days. Ali was one of alaundry list of high-profile ath-letes and Hollywood elite thathave helped turn MalibuClothes into the go-to place inBeverly Hills for top qualitymenswear for the last 60-plusyears.

That list included a who’swho of Hollywood A-listers.Rick said at one point, the ma-jority of the wardrobe for TVshows Spelling was involved inwere from Malibu Clothes.Malibu Clothes also did hugestudio business for MGM, Para-mount and others. Top NBAplayers and coaches likeMichael Jordan, Jerry West andPat Riley also frequented thestore.

Former Lakers and Clippersstar Matt Barnes, who currentlyplays for the Memphis Griz-zlies, is among Malibu Clothes’current clientele.

“You name him, he wasprobably a customer of ours,”Rick Firestone said, noting thatuntil the late 90s, customers atMalibu Clothes were generallyonly allowed in on a referralfrom an existing customer.

Ironically enough, that waslargely how the company took

off in the mid 40s. In 1946,Stan Firestone started MalibuClothes out of a loft in down-town Los Angeles. Stan hadbeen doing stockwork forPetrocelli clothing, and got thesecond-story loft in downtownto make it easier to ship theclothing across the country.

One day, a friend came toStan needing a suit and boughtone directly from him for awedding. A fellow weddingguest was so impressed withthe suit that he was referred toStan to get one of his own.Eventually, word spread of thesuits Stan had in his where-house and before long, he real-ized it might be a more prudentbusiness move to cut out themiddleman and begin sellingsuits directly to consumers.

In the late 50s, Stan’s friendMarvin Hime offered him a lo-cation in his building on Bever-ly Drive and Stan jumped at themove.

That was just down thestreet from the store’s currentlocation, in a building ownedby the Firestone family. Thefamily owns several buildingsin the area.

Stan’s secret was sellingsome of the finest quality linensat wholesale prices.

“My dad in some ways in-vented what today is Costco, itwas all about volume,” Fire-stone said. “We had garmentsjust as good as any other store, for a fraction of the price. Wewere selling for less, but mov-

ing so many more units.”Anyone who has ever

stepped foot in the average“suit store” you’d find on anystreet corner, the 3-Day SuitThis and Hollywood Suit That, would be stunned at the largefloorplan and collection at thetwo-story Malibu Clothes, car-rying top-flight brands like JackVictor. The top floor is a shirtshop and tailor.

Firestone, who today runsthe store with his son’s Ian andDrew, said the tide is turningon fashion and today’s youngmen are beginning to wantto want to dress nicer.

Younger cuts and flat frontsare in, but customers still wantpleated pants. Malibu Clothesprides itself on being able to fitanyone in any size, whether itbe smaller customers lookingfor tight fits, or heftier men,who may be interested in Mal-ibu’s “executive cut.”

Malibu Clothes is stillheavily involved in Hollywood, having recently done garmentsfor characters on shows likeRay Donovan, True Detective,Entourage and Mad Men.

Ian says it’s ultimately thecustomers that make it allworth it.

“To see the look on a man’sface when you put him in anice suit, when he slips thatcoat on, the confidence hefeels, there’s nothing like it,”Ian said.

The Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America’ local areachapter held its 8th “Women of Distinction” luncheon at TheBeverly Hilton honoring wedding coordinator Linda Howardand Tri-Star Productions’ Lindsay Sloane. In addition, therewas a special remembrance of the late CCFAspokesperson/actress Mary Ann Mobley, which daughterClancy Collins White accepted on her behalf..

Many thanks to luncheon co-chairs Caryl Golden, CathyGreenly and Ronda Lippman and their committee: HopeAnisgarten, Marci Berman, Masha Chase, Bobbe Joy Dawson,Jaye Eigler, Judy Felsenthal, Sheila Garb, Vicky Goodman,Barbara Herman, Evelyn Heyward, Mona Horton, LoriLasman, Claire Levine, Suzann Levine, Melissa Mitchell,Ashley Morrow, Patrice Reiss, Janet Bubar Rich, JulieRobinson, Kara Steinberg, and Alyssa Weinberger.

Proceeds fund cutting-edge medical research and supportprograms for children and adults.

******Renowned Israeli author Amos Oz received the “UCLA

Israel Studies Award” from Oscar-winning actress NataliePortman and philanthropists Younes and Soraya Nazarianwere given the inaugural “Visionary Award,” at the galaevening held in the Wallis Annenberg Center for thePerforming Arts. This celebrated the five-year anniversary ofthe UCLA Younes & Soraya Nazarian Center for Israel Studies, which promotes the study of Israel as a modern Jewish anddemocratic state.

The honorary committee was helmed by JanetNapolitano, president of the University of California, andUCLA Chancellor Gene Block.

Sharon Nazarian, chair of the center’s community adviso-ry board, welcomed more than 400 guests into the BramGoldsmith Theater and introduced celebrated Israeli TV com-mentator Ari Shavit who lauded the center as one of the topacademic entities promoting education and scholarship onIsrael in the U.S.

For those who think the Desert is allabout glitz, glamour and galas, there is anew temple of opulence planned for theCity of Rancho Mirage which will bolsterthat impression even further.

The Rancho Mirage City Council hasjust given its approval for the constructionof a $100 million “six star” hotel, spa andcondominium development just south ofcity hall and that town’s Cancer SurvivorsPark.

Temporarily called Thunderbird Resortand Spa – the permanent name will be an-nounced when a hotel operator signs on tomanage the facility – the project is plannedfor 24 acres encompassing 125 hotelrooms, up to 48 condominiums, threepools, a spa and fitness center, mountain-adjacent walking, hiking and cycling paths.

According to the project’s co-develop-er Richard Weintraub, the goals of the pro-ject’s philosophy will focus on fitness, edu-cation, reflection, relaxation and tranquili-ty leading to overall physical well-beingand “complete seclusion.” Of course, thesebenefits do not come cheap and the hotel’sowners are eyeing “rack rates” scaling fromupwards of $800 per night; the city councilis eyeing additional yearly Transit Occu-pancy Tax (TOT) income of millions of dol-

lars. Prices on the condos have notbeen set, but according to Wein-traub, they are expected to “… seta new market” for hotel-connectedcondominiums.

This is still speculative, how-ever, as financing has not been ob-tained– something the ThunderbirdResort and Spa’s neighbor, the five-star Ritz Carlton Hotel and Spa,took years to obtain.

******It used to be that a black tie

gala held at the Ritz Carlton meantguests would have an elegantevening. But, that was before thesound of busting financial bubblescould be heard from New York toCalifornia, and the luxury hoteloverlooking the Desert floor wasno more.

Now, nearly two decades later, the Ritz-Carlton is back in its re-newed finery as demonstrated afew weeks ago as the host venuefor the United Way’s celebration of25 years of giving with a “silver tie”gala featuring appropriately silvergowns for the ladies to off-set theirescorts’ black tie.

It was also more than appro-priate that the event’s presentingsponsor was Rolls-Royce MotorCars of Rancho Mirage, whichstruck the right note by highlightingthe décor with a four-foot icesculpture of the Rolls-Royce em-blem and provided guests withRolls-Royce themed swag bagitems.

Information about becomingpart of the United Way of theDesert’s next 25 years of giving isavailable at 760-323-2731.

project on the shelf because of the eco-nomic downtown.”

When the Wanda Group acquired it,the architectural firm “enthusiastically”agreed to return to the project.

The south tower, which faces SantaMonica Boulevard, is currently entitledfor 132 residential homes, 4,200 squarefeet of restaurant space and 11,656square feet of retail space. The proposedplan by Richard Meier & Partners Archi-tects, will eliminate the retail compo-nent and reduce residential by 20-per-cent, or 42 residences - to make roomfor the 134 hotel rooms.

The new development adds a publicelement, including a rooftop restaurant, spa and fitness facility. Public gardensand open space will be designed byOLIN landscape firm and the buildingsare expected to achieve at least a LEEDSilver Certification, said COO Jay New-man of the Athens Group.

The One Beverly Hills developmentteam will be led by Newman and the

Athens Group, developers of the Mon-tage Hotel and Beverly Canon Gardens.

They have successfully developedhotels in environmentally sensitivecoastal regions such as at Montage Lagu-na Beach, the Ritz-Carlton Half MoonBay and at the Four Seasons Hualalai inKona, Hawaii.

The Wanda Group was founded in1988 by Chairman Wang Jianlin and op-erates luxury hotels, commercial proper-ties, entertainment and tourism estab-lishments, department stores and e-com-merce businesses. Wanda Hotels andResorts Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of the Wan-da Group, had opened 71 luxury hotelsby December 2014.

Currently expanding globally inhigh profile projects, Wanda has under-taken developments in Chicago, Lon-don, Madrid and Sydney. Each one ofthese developments will feature a Wan-da luxury hotel.

Wanda plans to add 80 hotels by theend of 2015 to become the world'slargest owner of luxury hotels.

back when there was still a welcomecommittee with a sweet treat to wel-come each new resident to the neigh-borhood, they described the City as“very, very small” town. As newlyweds, they would visit each set of parents oncea week, bringing over their laundry andgetting a good home-cooked meal.

“It’s a small city in a large environ-ment with all the benefits of a large city,”Fran describes the Beverly Hills of todaywhere the daily population generallydwarves residents eight times over.

Fern originally moved into BeverlyHills shortly after she turned 12 and herfamily left New York for her father’s ca-reer as a television writer. Her father, who had once wanted to become a doc-tor but took a different path because ofthe Great Depression, went on to createMarcus Welby, M.D., and serve as its ex-ecutive producer. The television seriesstarring Robert Young was ABC’s first topshow and became the trailblazer for fu-ture medical dramas on TV.

Fern recalled fondly her early yearsin Beverly Hills, where as a Beverly Vistastudent she and her friends would walkalong Beverly Drive, visiting the mom-and-pop stores. At Beverly Hills HighSchool, Fern was the editor of the schoolnewspaper, Highlights.

“It’s always just been a great place tolive,” she said.

In fact, aside from the first years oftheir marriage, Fern has always lived inBeverly Hills.

Bob originally moved out to L.A.with his family from Iowa with just onesemester of high school left. After gradu-ating L.A. High School (class of 1949) hewent on to attend UCLA, with the inten-tion of becoming a newspaper man.

“I wanted to be a sports writer and Iwas willing to work to get it,” he said. “Infourth grade, I wrote a ‘What I want todo when I grow up’ essay; a sportswriter.”

After UCLA, where he penned thesemiweekly column “Seizing It Up” (aplay on his last name), Bob went on towork for eight years at the Los AngelesTimes covering sports.

“The guy who hired me said, 'It’s$64.50 a week,' and I said, ‘I’ll pay it,’”he recalled.

As was typical of the era, shortly af-

ter Fern gave birth to their first child, sheopted to forego her career ambitions tofocus on raising children.

Fern recalled how she had won anL.A. Times fellowship to attend graduateschool at UCLA when she was pregnantand that it came with a $1,000 stipend;at the time, she estimated tuition wasabout $39.

By the time Bob reached 30, nowwith two young children to provide for,he said he “saw the writing on the wall”and knew the newspaper businesswould be unable to provide him with thenecessary stability. Thus, Bob traded inhis byline to become a writer for sports-caster Tom Harmon.

After eight years covering the worldof sports he gravitated to television, eventually creating Up Close With RoyFirestone–a Monday through Friday tel-evision show that he produced for 15years.

Fern returned to the professionalworld once their children were oldenough to walk home from school, nowgravitating to community-based non-profits.

Following her role as public affairsdirector for the National Council of Jew-ish Women, Fern became the executivedirector of the San Fernando Valley FairHousing Council.

Eventually, she went on to becomethe executive director of the Venice Fam-ily Clinic, where she was instrumental inhelping the free comprehensive health-care clinic expand beyond its initial lo-cation.

Fern still sits on the board of theVenice Family Clinic today. She is also amember of the board for the NationalMultiple Sclerosis Society, where shehelps organize an annual bridge tourna-ment as a benefit fundraiser.

Bob is currently the treasurer for theSouthwest Beverly Hills HomeownersAssociation.

These days, in addition to theirmorning ritual of reading the print edi-tion newspaper for about an hour withtheir coffee, the Seizers like to plan outtheir upcoming trips.

This week, in fact, the two are trav-eling along the California coast withtheir third oldest grandson.

“I feel like Beverly Hills is home,”Fern said.

“In my opinion, you’ll never be sor-ry you live in Beverly Hills,” Bob added.

901 Strada Vecchia.The Bel-Air Association, on the

other hand, refused to publicly takestands against the Strada Vecchia prop-erty until after the LADBS got involvedand levied sanctions. It also refused totake a stand against a proposed largeproperty on Somma Way.

The BAA also opposed an interimcontrol ordinance that was approvedby the L.A. Planning and LanduseCommittee in March.

Hobbs had been a member of theBAA for more than 40 years before be-ing unceremoniously removed fromthe group last year when she ques-tioned at a meeting why the BAA wasnot stepping up publicly to defend Bel-Air residents.

“They refused to send me a duenotice after I had questioned why theywere not supporting homeowners intheir efforts to reduce hauling, con-struction vehicles parking on residen-tial streets and enforcement of L.A. De-partment of Building and Safety Per-mits,” Hobbs said.

Hobbs’ lawsuit has been centeredaround transparency concerns andpossible conflicts of interest. One suchinstance mentioned in the lawsuit isthe BAA’s law firm, of which HarveySaferstein, a former BAA President andexisting “ex officio” director, was for-merly a partner of.

That law firm characterized him asan existing director. In its 2014 IRSForm 990 tax filing, the lawsuit says theBAA “falsely asserts it has no econom-ic relationship with any present or for-mer officer or director.

It also refuses to adopt any conflictof interest policy or have its compensa-tion agreements reviewed or approvedby any independent source.”

Hobbs said the BAA alleged theIRS form 990 was only available tomembers, which is against the law.Form 990’s are public documents.

The lawsuit also alleges that theBAA has “no conflict of interest policy, and it conceals its governing docu-ments as well as its financial state-ments not just from the public, but, in-deed, even its own members. In fact, its purposed by-laws are captioned“Confidential Internal Use Only - Notfor External Distribution.”

The lawsuit goes on to note thatthe BAA did not hold its required annu-al meeting in 2014 because it did nothave enough Directors present at sev-eral attempted meetings.

Russell F. Wolpert of BrownGeorge Ross LLP, an attorney forHobbs, said the BAA is attempting tohold a substitute meeting on June 29,but the lawsuit challenges the legitima-cy of the meeting, urging that the elec-tion be held under the auspices of aSuperior Court Judge and that dissent-ing members should be able to go tothe electorate with their positions, something Wolpert says has previouslybeen prevented by the BAA.

“This action was brought becausein this era of openness and transparen-cy, the Bel-Air Association has becomea retrograde counterpoint.” Wolpertsaid.

BAA President Ron Hudson didnot return a request for a comment be-fore The Courier’s deadline Thursday.

AstrologyBy Holiday Mathis

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (June 26). This year it’s safer to make bolddecisions, as long as you make many of them. One is bound tohit. July focuses on friendship. August brings a mutually benefi-cial business relationship. At the end of 2015, you’ll be stronglyinfluenced by family and the idea of your legacy. Business trav-els happen in February. Scorpio and Taurus people adore you.CANCER (June 22-July 22). What’s happening around the globematters to you even if you don’t seem to be directly affected.Eventually, we are all affected by each other, no matter wherewe live. LEO (July 23-August 22). A money leak will turn into a gusher ifyou don’t take measures now to stop it. Bad financial habits diehard, but 21 times (in a row) doing the new improved action willcement it into your brain. VIRGO (August 23-September 22). The difference between apro and an expert is that the pro has to make a mutually agree-able product or the money won’t be exchanged. Are you readyfor that added demand? LIBRA (September 23-October 23). No matter how well youknow your task, you cant practice the unpredictable. Whenstrange twists happen, you’ll twist along with them. With yourskills and flexibility, you’ll pull this one off.SCORPIO (October 24-November21). It’s easier to like peopleand be nice to them when you believe they are not infringing inany way on what is yours or potentially yours. It requires anabundance mentality. Is there really enough to go around? That’sthe question.SAGITTARIUS (November 22-December 21). Evaluate yourprogress over the past four weeks. This review is crucial to figur-ing out what you should do next. There will be weekend distrac-tions a-plenty, so it's important to get focused now.CAPRICORN (December 22-January 19). The exchange ofmoney represents so much more than dollars and cents. It’s atrade of energy. If you’re lifted by the deal (even if you're notfinancially richer), it's a good deal.AQUARIUS (January 20-February 18). There’s comfort in rou-tine, while being in a rut isn’t comfortable at all. To keep yourroutine from becoming a restriction, be creative, plan surprisesand leave room for changing your mind. PISCES (February 19-March 20). If the myriad choices availableto you get overwhelming, remember that all you ever really haveto make is one decision. Decide who you are, and the rest fallsinto place naturally. ARIES (March 21-April 19). The person who’s supposed to bemaking your life easier may not seem like much help at firstbecause he or she needs to be taught what to do. With minimalinstruction, things will soon fall into a productive groove.TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You don’t see the point in followingthe same recipe over and over. You know what you’re going toget. You prefer the adventurous life that comes from daring toexperiment. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). It’s an excellent day for those work-ing for tips or commission. What can you do to enjoy your com-mute more? The improved mood will put you in super-produc-tivity mode when you arrive at work.

The newly Proposed Historical PreservationOrdinance in Beverly Hills is a well-reasonedand balanced approach to preserving and pro-tecting our historic resources.

This will encourage property owners to vol-untarily agree to landmark designation by pro-viding for a number of important incentives tothe property owner beyond those provided bystate law. At the same time, it provides someadditional protection for those owners who donot want their property designated a landmarkby changing the threshold for an involuntarydesignation.

The prior ordinance only required a proper-ty to be a “notable” example of an architect’swork. The new one requires a finding that theproperty is an “exceptional” example of thatarchitect’s work in order to force designation ona property owner. Simply put, not every masterarchitect’s work is deserving of landmark desig-nation.

The new proposed ordinance provides amore balanced and equitable approach topreservation that is reflective of our community’sdesires. Stephen P. Webb,

Former Mayor of Beverly Hills******

I was so sad to hear the news that SonnyAlexander died earlier this month. He wasn'treally a Beverly Hills fixture but close to it.When I was a little girl in the late 1950s andlived on Beverwil Drive long before there was aBeverly Hillcrest Hotel which is now a newincarnation on the corner of Pico Boulevard andBeverwil, called Mr. C.

There was Willard’s Chicken Ranch, anabandoned one story gray building with a hugeparking lot custom made for bike riding and me.On the other corner of Edris Drive and Picothere was a tiny budding business named SonnyAlexander Flowers just beginning there. As Irode through the alley in the back, Sonny wouldalways offer some of the more tired flowers thatweren’t too fresh to sell, and always gave themto me to bring home.

When his business grew larger the littleplace became a part of the brand new hotel thatwas about to be built. He moved down the streetto Beverly Drive and Pico and eventually ablock away to the current location.

When Sweet Sixteen parties were popular,he made the flower arrangement that looked likea soda–in a soda glass with white and pink car-nations which resembled vanilla ice-creamspilling over with straws–that was Sonny’s cre-ation. Over the years he took good care of ourfamily flower needs. And when ever you ran intohim, he was always shy and kind of a bashfulman, but always made sure to say hello to us. Ialways felt so lucky to have grown up in an erawhen your neighborhood and the people in it

meant a lot. Sonny was a very nice guy and willalways be remembered for his kindnesses to thathappy kid just riding her bike, being carefree, enjoying the sights, and the wonderful peopleshe grew up with! Frances Terrell Lippman,

Beverly Hills******

Recently, there was big news about philan-thropists convening in Las Vegas to combat BDS,its’ anti-Semitism, their willingness to destroyIsrael, or, as they call it, a division into twostates:

1) Hamasbythesea2) WestBankbytheriver. Note that Israel is not on the map.If BDS and certain Jewish groups are not

completely successful, then there will be threestates, with Israel continuing to fight for exis-tence.

Long before the Las Vegas’ meeting tookplace, many fine people and organizations havebattled against the BDSrs. I feel those peopleshould have been part of this meeting... theadditional money would go a long way.

Eshman from The Jewish Journal goes out ofhis way to convince us that J street (a groupformed by an Israeli who now lives in the U.S.where he doesn’t suffer rocket or stabbingattacks and has the gall to tell Israelis how tolive), the Jewish Voice for Peace plus two othergroups are also mixing into Israeli politics.

Instead of endorsing them, he should bewriting about how disruptive and anti-Semiticthey are. Did he miss the Jewish Voice for Peaceendorsement of the BDS movement at UCLA?Or is he just following his own liberal agenda?

Which brings us to other dangerous Jews, such as the three supreme court justices whodon’t know the location of the capital of Israel.According to them, people born in the city ofJerusalem can’t have Israel on their U.S. pass-ports.

The court actually overruled the Congress...wow, so much hatred. Leave it to the smart non-Jews in the court to do the right thing. Of course,we expect the Congress to again nameJerusalem as the capital of Israel. If certain Jewswould depart from their Democratic love affair, then Jerusalem will remain as the capital ofIsrael. I say.... don’t be fooled again and listen topromises– Bill didn’t do it and you can be sureHillary won’t either.

As an additional note: One Voice’s currentCEO is a Middle East advisor to Jimmy Carterand a former Bill Clinton ambassador to theMiddle East; They are funded by KIND healthysnacks company. Of course, both are also Jewsand have worked hard to try to keep Netanyahufrom being re-elected. Too bad for them.

Pablo Nankin, MDBeverly Hills
