Which European Union? : Europe After the Euro Crisis

Sergio Fabbrini Cambridge University Press Sergio Fabbrini argues that the European Union (EU) is made up of states pursuing different aims, rather than simply moving in the same direction at different speeds. He describes the alternative perspectives on the EU (an economic community, an intergovernmental union, and a parliamentary union), that led to multiple compromises in its structure and shows how the Euro crisis has called them into question. The book argues that a new European political order is necessary to deal with the consequences of the crisis, based on an institutional differentiation between the EU member states interested only in market co-operation and those advancing towards a genuine economic and monetary union. Such a differentiation would allow the latter group to become a political union, conceptualised as a compound union of states and citizens, while preserving a revised framework of a single market in which both groups of states can participate.

Research Design in European Studies : Establishing Causality in Europeanization Theofanis Exadaktylos & Claudio M. Radaelli Palgrave MacMillan A seminal text in European studies, which addresses issues of research design and causal analysis. The chapters draw on different methodological traditions, notions of causality, and methods and use strong research design to address substantive problems in public policy, party politics, foreign policy and legislative studies.

Global Migration: Old Assumptions, New Dynamics Diego Acosta Arcarazo & Anja Wiesbrock Praeger Publishers Inc This three-volume work exposes myths and debunks misinformation about global migration, an issue generating emotional debate from the highest levels of power to kitchen tables across the United States, Europe, and worldwide. It offers the university student or interested lay reader a broad and accessible introduction to key questions on migration issues in 50 countries spanning 5 continents. It presents cutting-edge research drawn from the eight academic perspectives of law, economics, politics, sociology, demography, geography, anthropology, and history to allow the activist, journalist, or specialist to discuss the issues more thoroughly and dispels numerous common myths surrounding migration, providing more depth and perspective than what is usually presented in the media.

Routledge Handbook of European Elections Donatella M. Viola Routledge The Routledge Handbook of European Elections explores the multifaceted dimension of the European Parliament's (EP) electoral contests across the European Community and European Union since 1979. After setting a general empirical and theoretical framework, this collaborative project presents original contributions from leading experts in the field. Each case study adheres to a common template that makes it easy to compare data, methodology and outcomes.

The European Union and the Member States (3rd edition)

Eleanor E. Zeff & Ellen B. Pirro Lynne Rienner Publishers Inc Can the European Union survive repeated economic crises? If it survives, will it stay as it is or take on a new form? This new edition of The European Union and the Member States, fully revised and updated, addresses these questions as it explores the complex relationship between the EU and each of its now 28 members. The country chapters follow a common format, considering: How and in what areas does EU policy affect, and how is it affected by, the member states? What mechanisms do the member states use to implement EU policy? What is each state’s compliance record? Covering the full range of political, economic, and social issues, the authors offer an insightful discussion of the interplay of EU initiatives with strong, existing national policies and traditions.

Designing a European Fiscal Union: Lessons from the Experience of Fiscal Federations Carlo Cottarelli & Martine Guerguil Taylor & Francis Ltd Does the European Union need closer fiscal integration, and in particular a stronger fiscal centre, to become more resilient to economic shocks? This book looks at the experience of 13 federal states to help inform the heated debate on this issue. It analyses in detail their practices in devolving responsibilities from the subnational to the central level, compares them to those of the European Union, and draws lessons for a possible future fiscal union in Europe. More specifically, this book tries to answer three sets of questions: What is the role of centralized fiscal policies in federations, and hence the size, features and functions of the central budget? What institutional arrangements are used to coordinate fiscal policy between the federal and subnational levels? What are the links between federal and subnational debt, and how have subnational financing crises been handled, when they occurred?

EU Foreign Policy and the Europeanization of Neutral States: Comparing Irish and Austrian Foreign Policy

Nicole Alecu de Flers Taylor & Francis Ltd his book examines the effects of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) of the European Union (EU) on the national foreign policies of Ireland and Austria. Small and neutral EU member states provide a fascinating case-study as the CFSP entails a dilemma for them. Their size may create assumptions that they are more likely to adopt EU policy, yet the traditional position of neutrality may act contrary to Europeanization. By concentrating on this side of the reciprocal relationship between EU and national foreign policy, the book takes a new and innovative approach to investigate prospects for a common European foreign policy, and goes beyond an examination of changes in the national foreign policies of Ireland and Austria to provide an engaging explanation and understanding of Europeanization.

International Economics: Theory and Policy (10th edition ) Paul Krugman Maurice Obstfeld & Marc Melitz Pearson Education Limited

For courses in International Economics, International Finance, and International Trade A balanced approach to theory and policy applications International Economics: Theory and Policy provides engaging, balanced coverage of the key concepts and practical applications of the two main topic areas of the discipline. For both international trade and international finance, an intuitive introduction to theory is followed by detailed coverage of policy applications. With this new tenth edition, the author team of Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman, renowned researcher Maurice Obstfeld, and Marc Melitz of Harvard University continues to set the standard for International Economics courses.

Brussels Bureaucrats? : The Administration of the European Union Anne Stevens & Handley Stevens Palgrave MacMillan Is "Brussels" the remote and insensitive bureaucracy of popular mythology? The "civil service" of the European Union is little known. This book provides an accessible account of its structures and their evolution, the administrative traditions on which they draw and the selection, training and careers, lifestyle, and ethos of EU officials.

Religion, Politics, and Turkey's EU Accession Dietrich Jung & Catharina Raudvere Palgrave MacMillan This book brings together historians, political scientists, social anthropologists and legal scholars from Turkey and the EU. The authors address questions such as the role of religion in EU membership debates, religious parties in Turkey and Europe, religion and European security, freedom of religion and minority rights in Turkey and the EU.

The EU and Turkey : A Glittering Prize or a Millstone? Michael Lake Federal Trust for Education & Research This timely publication comes at a period of unprecedented transformation in Europe and in Turkey. The European Union is coming on terms with its recent Enlargement to include ten new states. Turkey is making great progress in international modernisation. Each is watching the other carefully as negotiations for the future EU membership get under way. But can the EU expand to include a large state with a Muslim culture? Does Turkey's future lie as a potential member of the European club or instead as a privileged partner? This book is a multi-disciplinary attempt to illuminate the dimensions of the challenge from different perspectives. Its contributors included academics and analysts, politicians and practitioners from Turkey, Europe and America. Its breadth, depth and relevance will make it an invaluable source of reference.
