Where We Were in August
Turning the Corner…
It looks like Archdale UMC is turning the corner, literally and figuratively. On Sunday August 20th at a called session of the Church Conference we voted unanimously to pursue the purchase of the lot located at the corner of Main Street and Freeman Place. This property joins the property we purchased last year behind the fellowship hall and helps assure our ability to continue to grow at our current location. The office building, owned by Peggy Fletcher, is home to High Point Back Insurance and Memory Lane Portrait Studio. These tenants will remain in the building and the rental income from these tenants will come close to paying our mortgage for the property. Your support to our Building Fund is needed now more than ever as our related expenses for this purchase will be coming out of this fund.
Over the summer we have turned another corner. Pat McKim and Laurie Hamilton have done a tremendous job with their team in renewing our children’s ministry. Sunday mornings have been dramatically transformed with the implementation of a new style of teaching and continued improvements to our children’s classrooms. Teachers and students have shown a renewed enthusiasm for Sunday morning Christian Education and this week we will officially launch our new DISCIPLE STREET Sunday School program. You will be hearing and seeing more about this exciting new ministry. All of this comes on the heels of one of the most successful Vacation Bible Schools ever with 165 children registered and a great experience in sharing this ministry with Archdale Friends meeting.
We will also continue the process of overhauling our Church administrative structure. Our goal is to empower more people with more responsibility and opportunity for ministry and to begin claiming God’s vision for the future of the ministry of our church. Our desire is to reduce the size and simultaneously increase the role of our church leadership teams to give our ministry greater focus with the ability to respond to ministry opportunities more quickly. We will move through this transition at God’s speed and in God’s time as we work to discern God’s will for the future of our ministry.
Some exciting technological changes have already taken place to make our day to day office operations work more smoothly. We have made a number of improvements to our phone system. You can read about these inside this newsletter.
A few weeks ago after our steeple improvements were completed, I drove by the church at night with the steeple fully lit. I was moved at how good it looked. AUMC functions as a gateway into our community. It is one of the first things that people see as they come into Archdale on Main Street. God placed this church here in 1925 to be a resource for this community. It is good to know that eighty-one years later we are still honoring that call!

Many of you have noticed, the church office has some new and much needed equipment.
Phone System:
We have installed an upgraded telecommunications system throughout the offices and sanctuary
building. Some of our staff (Dana, Pat, Marilyn, & Debbi) have individual voice mail that will allow you to
leave confidential messages. New phones have been added in the Sunday School Office, nursery, and
in the narthex. A new intercom system has also been installed, allowing us to communicate with per-
sons from any phone within the 2 buildings or at the door. Our office staff and volunteers are still
becoming familiar with the system and we appreciate your
patience during this transition.
Phone Tree: In an effort to improve our communication to the congregation, we will be installing a new phone tree
system. This system will enable us to send a recorded message to every family in the
congregation in a matter of a few hours. We will use the system to notify the congregation of deaths,
changes in worship due to weather, and other congregational events. In addition to this, Sunday
school classes and committees will be able to use the phone tree system to deliver messages and re-
minders to their groups. If you would rather not be contacted in this way, please call the church office.
Door Security: We have added a security feature to the Fellowship Hall entrance door. Our staff is able to open the
door when it is locked by using any telephone. You simply press the button on the call box and some-
one will answer and let you in. The door remains locked at all times and has a quick release handle to
open it from the inside. If you have an event in the Fellowship Hall, please contact the church office for
instructions on how to unlock the door for re-entry purposes.

Fellowship Hall Storage Closet It has been an ongoing challenge to keep the aisles clear and the room organized in the Fellowship Hall storage room. Please return items to their original place. The design of this room is for storing church items, (i.e., church tables, chairs, risers, office supplies, etc.). We regret that we cannot accommo-date anything else. The aisles MUST remain clear at all times as per the requirements of the county Fire Inspector. If you have any questions, please contact the church office.

A “Thank You” Note Received from Communities in Schools
Dear AUMC:
Thanks so much for allowing CIS to use AUMC as a collec-
tion site for our “Fill the Bus” campaign. With the gener-
ous support of the community, we were able to help over
200 kids. Unfortunately, there’s so much more to do!
Thanks for all of your help in establishing the covenant be-
tween Archdale and AUMC. It truly does impact our com-
munity. Rosa and I appreciate your prayers and support
and all you’ve done for Stanley as well!

Letter received from High Point Jail Ministry - August 28, 2006
Dear Archdale UMC:
Your donation of $2000 to the HP Jail Ministry in the first seven months of 2006 is greatly appreciated. Support like yours is keeping this ministry alive. On behalf of the inmates, volunteers, and myself, I thank you.
The ministry is making a difference in the lives of inmates. Inmates are making decisions to become a Christian and/or to rededicate one’s life. A volunteer is working to disciple some of these inmates, but we need more volunteers to do this. Over 80 people participated in the Going for the Gold program over the weekend of July 7-9 and 60 participated over the weekend of August 4-6. God is blessing us.
Again, thank you for your support of High Point Jail Ministry. I hope that your support will continue in the future as the ministry continues to try to meet the needs of those inmates who wish to change their lives.
Sincerely,
George B. Brice Chaplain / Executive Director
