GUITARIST PETER BERNSTEIN,whose last album as a leader came out

in 2018, was mulling over releasing a newCD of some live recordings from that year. Then he got a call from Smoke Sessionsproducer Paul Stache, saying that SearSound's New York studios are open forbusiness. So on June 25, in the midst of theCOVID-19 pandemic, Peter was able torecord a new quartet album, What ComesNext, socially distancing with pianistSullivan Fortner, bassist Peter Washing-ton and drummer Joe Farnsworth.

For Peter, it was a rare chance thisyear to play with other musicians and torecord music he wrote during the pandem-ic lockdown.

"You get rusty playing by yourself,"Peter notes from the West Village apart-ment where he is hunkered down with hiswife and two sons. "Teaching and practic-ing are just not the same, you're not firingon the same cylinders in the same way. It'sjust not as intense as listening to otherpeople and interacting. Like having a con-versation, there's different rhythms and adifferent balance going on. I've been play-ing solo, and need to work to get better atthat, but at the same time you just missthat connection playing for and with peo-ple, that connection you can feel."

Connections, especially with musiciansPeter refers to as the elders, are veryimportant to him. What Comes Next is ded-icated to two recently deceased eldersPeter worked with: drummer Jimmy Cobband pianist Harold Mabern. The album isout this month in conjunction withlivestreaming performances from SmokeJazz & Supper Club by the CD's quartet,October 16-17.

"I'm lucky to be part of the last genera-tion who could be sidemen to the greatelder musicians and learn from them,"Peter says. His good fortune began early, when he enrolled in the jazz program atRutgers University and studied with gui-tarist Ted Dunbar. "We also had KennyBarron for a small group ensemble. Hewouldn't say much, but would correct uswhen we played the wrong chord changes;it was a lesson to trust the Real Book. Andwhen he played a tune with us on piano atthe end of a session, everybody wouldsound so much better. It was like he wasshowing us how you should play to makeeveryone sound better."

One of the biggest lessons Peter sayshe's learned from the elders he's workedwith is "their conviction. There's no doubtin them, it's all about complete commit-ment to the music."

Besides Jimmy Cobb, whom he met

when studying at the New School, andMabern, with whom he recorded, Peter hasan abundance of other fond memories. Herecalls working with saxophonist LouDonaldson and organist Dr. Lonnie Smithin Lou's group in the 1990s, as well as gigsand recordings with such elders as saxo-phonists David "Fathead" Newman,George Coleman and Sonny Rollins.

"It was a real thrill to work withSonny," he says of his sporadic tenure inSonny's band from 2010 to 2012. "I lovestandards, that's how we learn how musicworks in a lot of ways. And Sonny taughtus all how to play these old songs."

What Comes Next includes the debutrecording of a Rollins calypso, "NewarkNews," which Peter played with Sonny. The melody stuck with him so much thathe asked Clifton Anderson, Sonny'snephew, to get his uncle's permission torecord it. It is one of three non-originals inthe nine-track program. The others areDizzy Gillespie's "Con Alma" and the CarlFischer-Frankie Laine ballad "We'll BeTogether Again." Peter is celebrated for hisinterpretation of ballads. His sometimebandmate Brad Mehldau notes, "He

SINGER MARIANNE SOLIVAN ISmore fortunate than most musicians,

thanks to saying yes when she was tempt-ed to say no.

"I was offered a full-time teaching giglast year and I wasn't sure I should take itbecause I was performing so much," sheexplains. "Happily I overrode my emotion-al hesitation and took the job. Now I con-sider myself very lucky because almost allof the musicians I know are not workingand practically destitute."

A well-schooled vocalist, Marianne isassistant professor of jazz voice at SyracuseUniversity's Setnor School of Music. Due tothe pandemic she currently teaches onlinefrom her New York City home. Thanks to aknack for technology, she is very comfort-able teaching virtually, and her studentsbenefit from her expertise.

Hailing from the Boston suburbs,Marianne originally wanted to pursue acareer in musical theater. She attendedBoston Conservatory for a year, but took ahiatus because of family issues. Duringthat time, she discovered Ella Fitzgeraldand realized that she really wanted to be ajazz singer. She returned to school to studyvoice.

"I applied and was accepted to theBerklee College of Music and started at thevery beginning," she says. "Ella was myprimary influence, but I also listened a lotto Nina Simone, Carmen McRae and BettyCarter. After graduation, I continuedstudying, getting a master's from NewEngland Conservatory."

In 2007, Marianne moved to New Yorkwhere she became one of the top singers onthe scene, performing at well-known clubsincluding Dizzy's Club, Birdland, the BlueNote, Smalls and elsewhere.

When the pandemic hit in March, shewas in the middle of a five-week tour thatcame to an abrupt halt, changing life forher as it did for others. "For the first fewmonths it was really hard to listen or to

play music. If I'm not singing all the time, then something's wrong. At first I wasn'tlistening to anything, particularly jazz.Gradually I turned to rhythm and bluesand now, thanks to my students, I amagain focused on jazz."

That focus can be heard in her weeklyJazz Vocal Repertoire Hang, which con-venes every Saturday at 1 p.m. Marianneuploads a chart and the participants singand talk about the tune for an hour or so.It's an opportunity for both students andworking singers to gather and enjoy vocal-izing while learning new charts and com-ing together as a community. The freeevent is open to everyone at all levels, andis much needed during these challengingtimes.

In addition to teaching, Marianne alsohas a couple of gigs coming up this month. On October 10, she performs at the DeerHead Inn with guitarist Michael Valeanuand bassist Boris Kozlov. She appears inNew Brunswick at Tavern on GeorgeOctober 26 with Boris on hand once again, plus guitarist Ron Affif. Both performanc-es are going to follow safety guidelines andare outdoors, although the Deer Head Innoffers some indoor seating.

"I haven't been performing in a while, but there are some tunes that I'm lookingforward to singing. I love 'Forget Me,'which was a hit for Shirley Horn; 'You Hitthe Spot,' originally recorded by SarahVaughan; and 'Live for Life,' which seemsso appropriate right now," Marianne notes."I have a huge repertoire, so I don't plan aset list in advance. We can go from 'YouMust Believe in Spring' to 'Confirmation,'but it really depends what seems right."

This popular singer enjoys a reputationfor a captivating stage presence (which nodoubt makes her a popular teacher) and apassionate singing style. She is known foralways learning and pushing herself.Marianne has performed and recordedwith many jazz luminaries includingChristian McBride, Peter Bernstein,Jeremy Pelt, Xavier Davis, GeneBertoncini and Lewis Nash. JazzTimesnoted that she "remains too much a localdelicacy," but praised her latest release,Spark, as a recording that "will at lastignite wider recognition."

The pandemic has paused that upwardtrajectory, but Marianne Solivan continuesto delight listeners wherever she performswhether it is with her weekly jazz hang orsocially distanced live performances. She isdefinitely a singer to watch.

Marianne Solivan appears everySaturday at 1 p.m., on Jazz VocalRepertoire Hang through Facebookand is set to perform with her trio atthe Deer Head Inn in PennsylvaniaOct. 10, and at Tavern on George inNew Brunswick, New Jersey, Oct. 26.

LOOKING FOR JOEL ROSS? CHECKthe calm space in the eye of the storm

that is 2020. "Contrary to reasoning, I'vebeen pretty positive," the vibraphonist, composer and educator says. "It can betough for a lot of people now. There's a neg-ative connotation that could be applied tothe time. But I'm trying not to let it affectmy ability to keep going. I've been carefulabout how I've chosen to spend my time.I'm just taking it one day at a time."

While sticking close to home, Joel's notjust coping, he's thriving. "This is thelongest I've ever been in New York at agiven time since I moved here," he notes.Besides practicing and composing, he hasenrolled in classes at the New School, aim-ing to complete the degree in jazz studiesand performance that he put on hold toaccommodate his busy touring schedule.

Extra time in New York has createdopportunities to strengthen ties, personaland professional: "I'm fortunate to liveclose to my girlfriend [multi-instrumental-ist and composer Gabrielle Garo] and herfamily, so I spend time with them. For along time she was in school getting hermaster's and I was touring, so now we havea chance to play and create music together. We're building a repertoire together, recording live, learning video editing."

The vibist has found ways to share hismusic. "I've been streaming a lot, especial-ly when the shutdown started. A lot of dif-ferent people and places asked for prere-corded videos they could use." Joel was fea-tured in the Jazz Gallery Online'sLockdown Session series, and a Junelivestream from that venue. He played anaudience-free concert streamed from theArt Center at Duck Creek in EastHampton, now available on YouTube. Joeldebuted a Jazz Coalition-commissionedpiece, "Praise in the Midst of the Storm,"during the virtual Rise Up Brooklyn!Festival, and has done socially distancedconcerts in Central Park and elsewhere.

"After months of not playing with othermusicians, it was really easy to get backinto playing, we were able to focus on eachother and the music, I was glad to discoverthat," Joel says. "There was a staminathing at first, but there was still energy.Even if it was not that physical, the energywas very present."

He is looking forward to the release of anew recording, Who Are You? (Blue Note).Joel was already in an introspective spacewhen he went into the studio lastDecember with his Good Vibes band, com-prising saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, pianist Jeremy Corren, drummer Jeremy

Dutton and bassist Kanoa Mendenhall.Harpist Brandee Younger guests on a thirdof the 15 tracks of Who Are You?, set todrop this month. "I wanted to documentwho we are as a group, who I am as a per-son. I was thinking of the progression ofthe self, how we grow as people, as friends, the idea of us moving forward as people,"he muses.

His first release, KingMaker (BlueNote), was well received, earning first-place honors as the debut album of theyear, and ranking number 13 overall in the2019 NPR Music Jazz Critics Poll. "It wasdefinitely pleasant to see people enjoy thealbum. I was glad to be able to documentthe band and who we were at that time, but I'm more excited with this one," Joelsays. Before recording Who Are You?, "Wewere touring more, playing more gigs. Wehad more time to feel really connected as agroup."

Joel and Good Vibes celebrate Who AreYou? with a virtual release gig October 23,on Blue Note Streaming Live. "Whenyou're playing in an empty club, obviouslyyou're not feeding off the audience's ener-gy," he acknowledges. "But during streamsit doesn't affect us not to have a tangibleaudience. Playing live with other musi-cians we could focus on the feeling, not onworrying about the audience."

THE LATIN SIDEOF HOT HOUSE

By Raul da Gama

THE COLOMBIA-BORN, VENEZUE-la-raised Juancho Herrera is a prodi-

giously gifted vocalist, guitarist, song-writer and producer. As if that were notenough, he is also an accomplished design-er and photographer. Yet he is extraordi-narily modest about his achievements, despite the fact that he has become all therage, performing with an array of musi-cians including Lila Downs, Sofia Rei,Mercedes Sosa, Branford Marsalis,Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alejandro Sanz.Juancho's talents were featured onTurning Pages (Delfin) by Claudia Acuña.He co-wrote, arranged and produced musicfor the album, which was nominated for aLatin Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album.

A quintessential artist, Juancho haslived life like a sponge, absorbing every-thing around him, both atmospheric andartistic. "I grew up surrounded by the fes-tive rhythms of both Colombia andVenezuela," he says excitedly. He recalls acharmed childhood: "My father is an ama-teur guitar player with a very gifted andbeautiful voice. I remember him singingboleros, and all kinds of Latin Americanmusic. He also gave me my first Beatlesalbum for Christmas and brought homerecordings by Chick Corea and BadenPowell. And my mother gave me my firstguitar!" His naturally adventurous spiritwas also fired up by the music of SimónDíaz, Rubén Blades, Sting and Bill Frisell. It wasn't long before such a dizzyingadventure landed him in the US, atBerklee College of Music, Boston.

Juancho's art comes alive with a uniquemagic of its own, stewed, as it were in acauldron of myriad bubbling literary, musical and other experiential ingredi-ents. His music has an epic quality to it,something that his fourth studio album,Gaviero (Independent), exhibits to perfec-tion. The music rises to eminence in thesmoke of the mystical poetry of the iconicColombian Álvaro Mutis. Juancho's attrac-tion to the Colombian's poetry has every-thing to do with Álvaro's exploration of

realismo magico (magical realism) in hisepic work, Empresas y tribulations deMaqroll el Gaviero. This is an anthologythat brings together seven poetic novellas, written between 1986 and 1991, featuringthe allegorical escapades of a boatmannamed Gaviero.

"It is a metaphor of transcendent pro-portions," Juancho explains. "I have triedto capture the tragicomedy of it all inmusic. Most of the songs are inspired byliterary passages and revolve around theidea of confrontation between the real andthe imagined world, which Mutis' charac-ter Gaviero inhabits." Juancho capturesthe foibles of Gaviero with great empathy, pathos and humor.

Juancho moves easily between artisticdisciplines and also transcends geographicand cultural boundaries—even those creat-ed by oceans. Earlier this year he arrangedand produced River (Independent), a vocalalbum by Nikolett Pankovits, reimaginingHungarian folk songs swirling in a melis-ma of South American and jazz rhythms.

Juancho Herrera’s virtual concertat the Soapbox Gallery is Oct. 14 withpianist Manu Koch, bassist BamRodríguez and drummer FrancoPinna.

BERNSTEIN...continued from page 2

always seems to create a definitive versionof a tune, one that intersects gracefullybetween an unapologetic affection for theoriginal song, and his own personal musi-cal choices for the arrangement."

Peter is equally definitive in his render-ing of his own tunes. "With my tunes, I feellike I just gotta play them," he says. "If Idon't, nobody else will get them out there. With this album I knew we could do thenew material even at the risk of recordingbefore ready."

That new material is presented with thevariety Peter strives for during a set at alive gig. The album includes some tunesthat reflect directly on the pandemic situa-tion, such as the haunting ballad "EmptyStreets," conjuring a view of New York as aghost town, and the title blues waltz.

Peter Bernstein's livestreamrelease party is set for Oct. 16-17, fromSmoke Jazz Club & Lounge.

year's events may have on jazz, he notes, "Itwon't change the sound of the music, but itcould change how musicians relate andplay with one another. Every musician I'vetalked to has a greater appreciation for per-forming together. People are going to findas many ways as possible to play and havepeople witness their music. You see it nowwith people playing outside—we can't beclose but we're trying to create a humanconnection as close as possible. All we haveto home in on is the music and each other. We're getting back to that sense of commu-nity and communication that's an impor-tant part of this music."

Joel Ross and Good Vibes—saxo-phonist Immanuel Wilkins, pianistJeremy Corren, drummer JeremyDutton, bassist Or Baraket—focus onmaterial from the new release Who AreYou? Oct. 23, on Blue Note StreamingLive.

JAZZ ANECDOTE BY BILL CROWBill Crow's books "Jazz Anecdotes" and "From Birdland to Broadway" can be

found at your favorite bookstore, and at www.billcrowbass.com I got this story from guitarist Matt Munisteri:One of my favorite stories about the late [cornet player] Peter Ecklund comes from when

I was playing on a record of period jazz that he had done arrangements for and was produc-ing. He was in the control room and I was in a booth and could just see him slightly. Hepressed the talk-back button:

"You know, it really is remarkable...your chord voicings really sound exactly like EddieLang..."

"Oh, thanks.""Yes, it's uncanny. And your fills and your sound and approach. Did you learn how to do

that just by listening to his records?" "Yeah.""That's really wonderful.” (Then, with a sunny smile,) “But please, DON'T DO THAT. It

doesn't work with what I've written for the horns.”

A Moment You Missed by Fran Kaufman Hot House Contributing

PhotographerThe proliferation of concerts online has kept

us connected but the pandemic lockdown hasdeprived us of the of live events. For me,some of the most pleasurable jazz momentsthese days are outdoors and serendipitous.

Who would have thought that a recent tripto the Sunday 92 Street Greenmarket wouldinclude a jazz performance? Stationed amongthe vegetables, fish and flowers were trom-bonist Art Baron and Bill Crow. Bill movesso much with the music, I couldn’t get a photoof him sitting still!
