THE PURPOSE The mission of the Friends of the Denver Fire Department is to support Denver's Fire Department by providing public education, through efforts to improve firefighter safety and quality of life by furnishing direct resources to meet fire fighter needs thereby improving public safety in the City and County of Denver. RECENT SUCCESSES: In December 2012, Denver Fire Department and the Friends of the Denver Fire Department received notice of a grant award from the Department of Homeland Security for nearly $1.4 million for the purchase of:

• 242 SCBAs with a 45 minutes breathing time, a face piece and extra O2 bottle. These NFPA 2007- compliant SCBAs are lighter and have a streamlined back frame with a low profile. This provides the firefighter with a more complete range of motion, decreasing the risk of injury.

• 262 complete sets of turnout gear that feature increased design flexibility, a drag rescue device built into the coat, and increased garment composite breathability. All of this equates to greater protection, increased maneuverability, and greater durability, enabling the firefighter to work more efficiently and safely in the field.

• In July 2012, we received notice of another Department of Homeland Security award for the purchase of 88 iPads, cases and Fire House inspection software applications. These iPads will be used mainly for business inspections and synching with software at the stations as well as other on-the- scene medical and other emergency needs.
