Where should the MICROWAVE go? 3
Intro
With such an assortment of microwave ovens tochoose from, which microwave best suits yourneeds? Whether you are designing a kitchen in anew home, remodeling an older kitchen or simplyreplacing a current microwave, this guide shouldhelp you through the process. The following is achecklist of questions you may want to considerbefore making your selection.
• Do you want the microwave built-inor on the countertop?
• How will the microwave be used? How often? Whether it will be usedprimarily for reheating and defrosting,or for more cooking, may determinethe best location.
• How often will the microwave be usedin conjunction with other appliances?
• Do you want a second oven? Haveyou considered a combinationconvection microwave oven as a goodsolution?
• Do you need two microwave ovens?• Do you need a microwave in another
part of the home such as a gameroom, transition room, masterbedroom or wet bar?
The basic categories from which to choose arecountertop, built-in a cabinet or wall, over the rangeor Sharp’s new category, over the counter.
Countertop – Sharp offers a range of microwaveovens from compact 0.5 cu. ft. to full size 2.0 cu. ft.,with wattage up to 1200 watts. An assortment offeatures, including one-touch sensor cooking, isavailable. Please refer to each model’s feature listand explanation for details. Available space maydetermine your selection. The Sharp Platinumseries is a good solution when space is tight. Bigon the inside, small on the outside, these
microwave ovens provide a smaller footprint witha unique design to save space. Another alternativeis placing the microwave on a shelf. Most cabinetmanufacturers offer a range of options.
Built-in Kits for microwave ovens – Oftendesigners and users look for an alternativelocation other than the countertop in order tosave space, provide greater functionality or for amore integrated look. Sharp offers an assortmentof UL-approved kits that allow you to build-inmany of our larger countertop models into acabinet or wall location. Kits are available in anumber of color and material options. Theyprovide proper circulation when the microwaveoven is built into a closed location. Please refer toeach individual model’s operation manual(available at www.sharpusa.com) for installationrecommendations.
Over the Range “OTR” – Locating a microwaveoven over a range or cook top provides theadditional functions of hood ventilation and tasklighting. Sharp OTRs offer the option of venting tothe outside vertically, horizontally or recirculatingwhen outside venting is not available. All Sharpmodels are built-in ready for easy installation.
Over the Counter “OTC” – Often designers lookfor ways to place the microwave oven over thecounter. The only options in the past were to use amicrowave shelf in the wall cabinet or to build themicrowave into a custom cabinet. Now Sharp’s OTCmicrowaves provide a built-in-ready solutiondesigned for standard 24 inch wide cabinets. EachOTC microwave is equipped with an under-the-cabinet light that acts as a decorative accent light, functional task light, or serviceable nightlight. Anoptional Accessory Kit is available with twostainless steel accessory bars and eight “S” hooks, ideal for essential cooking tools.
