Message from Robert, our SAL leader: First, Jean, Vickie and I welcome everyone to this year’s stitch-along! We know the year has already gotten away from us, but not to worry! We all have plenty of time to finish Sarah’s beautiful sampler before 2019 arrives. We’ve taken it slow in announcing an “official” start, largely because of some supply dilemmas. While it is cumbersome to provide several linen and fiber options, it does permit accommodating more of your preferences. That said, we’re hoping that everyone will have their supplies and be ready to rumble by March 1. Yes, I’ve gotten a head start (much of it on Super Bowl Sunday), but I can assure you that a page a month plus a little extra (maybe finish a motif or work ahead on the border or jump to the grass) will get you there. It should be very easy to catch up! I was able to do Page 1 in around 10 hours over 5 days (a little longer for the over one parts). Do not feel that you have to be 'caught up'. Some people like to follow a plan while others like to work at their own pace. Also I work in a hoop so I tend to jump around (but I am resisting that urge right now so that I can stitch with those that want to do a part a month). There are some stitchers who work in a scroll frame so it is easier to work from the top down. While it would be good to work the rose vine down the left hand side to get to the house and grass since those sections will likely take a little bit longer since they are solid sections. Please let me know if there is anything that I can assist you with along the way. Instead of having yet another dedicated Facebook page, we’ve decided to use Attic Addicts because this is a community where Attic enthusiasts gather (who knows, we may gain another stitcher or two or three as the year progresses). For those of you not on FaceBook, the newsletters will include the Stitch-Along information and updates.

We are offering several Lakeside linen choices: Vintage Buttercream & Vintage Pecan Butter, which have little or no red in them, as well as Vintage Lt. Examplar, which is what I’m using on the 52/60.

Our Summer School faculty has some very fun and interesting projects planned for you! Our faculty includes our very talented and creative designers in the desert: Linda/Samplers Remembered, Gloria/Milady’s Needle, Vickie & Maegan/NeedleWorkPress, Linda/Needlemade Designs, Tanya/The Scarlett House, and Apryl/Priscilla’s Pocket. We‘ve met to begin the plans & projects, and we are all very excited to invite you to our sixth annual Summer School presented by The Attic. By popular student request, Pieces of Olde returns as this year’s theme, inspiring your faculty to busy themselves reproducing and designing projects drawn from Pieces of Olde. I can assure you that you will be thrilled! We are very excited about the Summer School Curriculum for this year and have provided a few sneak peeks below.

For your Summer School Tuition of $550 you will receive six beautiful reproduction samplers, and some will include a project derived from the sampler, all of your meals, some fun gifts, and more wonderful surprises. This amazingly reasonable tuition is only possible because all of these designers are local and, therefore, have no airfare expense. Don’t miss out on the funnest Summer School ever! We hope you’ll plan to join us!

We had our first planning meeting, and we’re all very excited about what’s in store for you at this year’s summer school! Here are a few sneak peeks of several of the incredible samplers that will be used to inspire projects for you!

The reproduction was stitched on 40c Lakeside linen with 22 Au Ver a’Soie silks ($94.60). The reproduction of this exquisite sampler is on display on the front table … where others from our half dozen local designers will also be displayed. ‘Tis Christmastime’ By Merry Cox

How wonderful, that despite Merry’s inability to teach to us in person at this time, she has designed a sweet little 4” x 3” needlebook to celebrate this Season of Joy … with a sweet original poem by Merry on the back. Her model is stitched on 40c Vintage Country Mocha with cotton threads, but it could easily be done on 36c linen if that is more comfortable for you, and its size becomes 4.4” x 3.4.”

The needle pages & scissors holder are made with antique linen from 1870 that Merry purchased in Germany. The antique button for the closure is from England. Merry also includes the lovely ribbon that ties the needle book shut at its “binding.”

We are thrilled to present this is an Attic exclusive from Merry. The 5-page chart includes all of the finishing instructions with photos. The $25 chartpack also includes the 1870 German antique linen for the needle pages and scissors holder, the antique button from England, and the ribbon. The silk lining fabric is NOT included.

We are offering with your chartpack a cut of 40c or 36c linen, your choice.

MARY PORTER 1832 $16 Mary Porter was just 12 years old when she stitched this beautiful sampler. Surrounded by a strawberry border, the entire sampler is made up of floral motifs, blue birds, butterflies, & flower baskets. In the center bottom of the sampler Mary stitched a tree of life complete with Adam & Eve and the serpent.

Gloria Moore of Milady’s Needle was with us, and she picked up her beautiful ANN EMPTAGE 1845 from Sandy’s framing studio to bring to Nashville, so everyone got a great look at this exquisite antique (some didn’t realize it was an antique, it’s in such remarkable condition), and we were all treated to some of the history that Gloria was fortunate to find when she made contact with a family member in Australia through her research on the Emptage family on Ancestry.com.

ANN EMPTAGE 1845 was one of our 2017 Summer School projects and is now available to everyone. The motifs on this sampler are simply exquisite.

And Linda, our in-house Martha, treated us to some delicious fruit pies, and Beth’s treat was Red Velvet Cake! Yes, we are spoiled!

We Like Happy Customers! Recently we have experienced unusual delays in receiving some of our vendor orders due to a variety of things, a computer problem at one of our distributors (which made our wait two-plus weeks instead of next-day order fulfillment), base product not being available to a linen dyer, and a multitude of other issues, including flu and other seasonal ailments that affected small staffs, and that necessarily affects our ability to timely fill your orders. As you can appreciate, it is something we have no control over, and it is just as frustrating for us as it is for you. We are people-pleasers here, we like happy customers, and it really ruins our day when we receive angry phone calls, sometimes ending in a customer hanging up on us. As one of my shop-owner friends says, it’s just needlework and babies aren’t going to die. And when put into perspective, it’s not a life-or-death issue. But if you need to vent, please ask to speak with me … Jean. It’s upsetting to my employees, and to me as well, to take angry phone calls, but I don’t want to unnecessarily subject them to the vitriol. Just as we want happy customers, I need a happy staff. We are a small group and we support each other. Our favorite customers are happy customers!

Price Increase We were notified last week by o u r d i s t r i bu t o r t h a t t h e beautiful French embroidery silk, Au Ver A’Soie ’s Soie d ’Alger, has had a pr ice increase. As of March 1 a 5-meter skein will be $4.50.

Hannah just returned from her senior trip to Williamsburg and Washington, DC. She had an incredible time … but it’s wonderful to have her home again. Her daddy especially missed her!

Insurance on Shipping I am considering adding insurance to all shipments, due to an increase in misdelivered packages, shipments not being forwarded when a forwarding address has been given, and not being returned to us, the shipper. It’s frustrating and time-consuming, and insured shipping may be a necessary solution.
