February Outreach

February is the month of Love. John Steinbeck shared these thoughts on love in a letter to his son. “Love can be an outpouring of everything that is good in you---of kindness and consideration and respect---not only the social respect of manners, but the greater respect which is recognition of another person as unique and valuable. This love can release in you strength, and courage and even wisdom you didn’t know you had.”

This month let’s celebrate love, in whatever form it is in your life, whether it is a spouse or significant other or your friends, parents or children. Let’s use this month as a reminder to rededicate ourselves to “outpouring everything good in you”. * February 5th is National Wear Red Day: Since February is American Heart Month, wear red to promote awareness of heart disease.

*February 11th is Get Out Your Guitar Day: The guitar is a versatile instrument which most people enjoy. If you play or know someone who does, get together to play and sing some favorite songs.

*February 14th is Valentine’s Day: This is a great day to make a card or write a note of appreciation to someone special to you.

*February 20th is Love Your Pet Day: Pets play an important role in the lives of many people and bring great joy. Love your pet today by spending extra time giving it attention and maybe a treat.

*February 29th is Leap Day: Once every 4 years calendars feature an extra day in February. What will you do with this bonus day? The Leap Year Book, by Barbara Sutton-Smith, is full of trivia and interesting information about Leap Day you may find quite intriguing.

Healthy Sleep Hygiene

If there is a secret to having a healthier way to start your day, it starts with a good night’s sleep. Not surprisingly, a regular sleep schedule, with an adequate amount of sleep – seven to eight hours for most people – is the most important thing to start with. Healthy sleep hygiene will allow for good sleep quality and quantity. These principles include:

Keep a regular bedtime, and more importantly, wake time. Varying your sleep schedule is a bit like giving yourself jet lag.

Sleep only in bed, not elsewhere.

Use the bed only for sleep and intimacy. Watching TV, reading and other activities make it hard for the brain to know the bed is really for sleep.

Keep the bedroom cool and quiet.

Exercise daily.

Limit caffeine.

Limit alcohol – drinking too much or too close to bedtime can disturb sleep, especially in the second half of the night.

Avoid naps.

“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire.” Edith Sitwell

SOCIAL SECURITY CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH

By Terri Coleman

Social Security District Manager in Wilmington, DE

Throughout the month of February, we celebrate Black History Month. Created in 1926, this event

coincides with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and Frederick Douglass on February

14. African American communities have celebrated these birthdays together since the late 19th century.

Honoring our shared history and reflecting on the past is one way we unify as a nation. We remember

that we are all Americans; we believe in freedom and democracy for all. Another shared belief is that we

all deserve a comfortable retirement, free of economic hardship.

Social Security has the tools to help you plan for your retirement and to apply for benefits online. We

also provide disability benefits to individuals with medical conditions that prevent them from working.

If the disabled individual has dependent family members, they can also receive payments.

If you or anyone you know is disabled, they may qualify for disability benefits. Studies show that a 20-

year-old worker has a 1-in-4 chance of experiencing disability before reaching full retirement age. You

can see if you meet our strict definition of disabled and apply for benefits at

www.socialsecurity.gov/disabilityssi/apply.html.

Widows, widowers, and their dependent children may be eligible for Social Security survivor benefits.

Social Security helps by providing income for the families of workers who die. In fact, 98 of every 100

children could get benefits if a working parent dies. And Social Security pays more benefits to children

than any other federal program. You can learn more about Social Security survivor benefits at

www.socialsecurity.gov/survivors.

Honoring each other begins with fair and equal treatment. Social Security guarantees that everyone who

pays into the system has access to the same benefits. This Black History Month, we want to make sure

our diverse nation is covered and that everyone receives the benefits they deserve. Visit

www.socialsecurity.gov to learn more.
