I am pleased to present you with the 2018-19 Annual Report. This Annual Report completes the first year of JDS: Better Together and my first year as Head of School for this truly relevant and beloved school.

JDS: Better Together, our strategic vision through 2020, weaves together the orbits of Uniting Perspectives, Optimizing Location, Expanding STEM, and Evolving with Community, all set on a foundation of Building Identity and Upstanders. In this first year, JDS addressed the needs of our students and families through multi-grade Villages and Holiday camps. Our school furthered its exploration into a Jewish Campus partnership on Mercer Island with the SJCC, Herzl-Ner Tamid Conservative Congregation and other community partners.

2018-19 was just the beginning of a new era of advancement for JDS. As anti-Semitism rises around us, the reach of JDS is critically important. I am proud to offer an innovative and forward-looking education that marries high academics with Jewish identity and voice. JDS grows Upstanders, confident and knowledgeable students who will lead this next generation.

As we head towards an exciting future for JDS, we are grateful for our JDS families and extended community.

Todah Rabah,

Vivian Scheidt, Head of School

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

2018-19 marked the beginning of a new era for JDS. Through JDS: Better Together, our two-year Strategic Vision and the new leadership of our Head of School, JDS continues to evolve to address the changing needs

of our families and community.

I am excited to share the forward momentum and dynamic accomplishments of 2018-19 in this Annual Report. The success of JDS is without question based on the dedication and commitment of our broader community and each one of you.

As my family enters its 10th year at JDS, I am honored to be serving my second year as President of the Board. In partnership with the Executive Committee, Board Leadership and JDS Administration, we are continuing to focus on our mission and advance JDS as an institution that puts forth the next generation of inspired Jewish leaders. Through academic excellence, and Jewish life, learning, and values, our graduates leave well-positioned to stand tall and succeed in the next chapter of their lives.

Thank you for recognizing the importance of JDS. Your generous support ensures JDS thrives for years to come.

Todah Rabah,

Ida Wicklund, President, JDS Board of Trustees

“ Learning is the raising of character by the broadening of vision and the deepening of feeling.” — Mayer Sulzberger,

U.S. Judge and Jewish communal leader, 1843-1923

L’DOR V’DOR SOCIETY The core Jewish value of tzedakah (justice, charitable giving) is passionately demonstrated by our JDS grandparent constituency. L’Dor V’Dor — from generation to generation — our school’s collective intergenerational support is inspiring, and we are extremely proud and grateful for their unwavering commitment to our students and community. L’Dor V’Dor Society donors are JDS grandparents (current and former) who contribute a minimum of $180 to JDS annually. Todah Rabah!

YASHER KOACH to our devoted parent community for reaching 100% Annual Fund parent participation for the FOURTH year in a row!

PARENT TESTIMONIAL“This is my family’s 10th year at JDS. We have experienced

preschool through elementary ed, and now the middle school. I am grateful we found JDS. My kids are challenged

academically, the teachers meet them where they are, and they are so well supported socially and emotionally. The teachers know my kids and can speak about them as individual learners. They are amazingly supportive when handling social issues, and it really feels like they have my back as a parent. I know when my family is going through difficult times that the JDS teachers and staff, and parent community is there for us 100% with support and love.

I would give up any luxury in my life to keep my kids at this school. It’s the best gift I could ever give them.”
