(ARA) - Many Americansare trying to get the full

value out of their vehicle, asevidenced by the recent

findings that the averageage of a vehicle on the roadhas reached over 10 yearsold, according to an R.L.Polk & Co. study. In order tomake sure that their vehi-cles remain durable, it isimportant that motoristslook for ways to help keeptheir vehicles runningsmoothly, longer.

“The engine in a vehicleis much like the heart in ourbodies: In order for theheart to be fit and strong,we need to take care of it,”says Jeff Hsu, technologymanager for the QuakerState brand, who wants tohelp drivers take the stepsthat can help extend the lifeof their vehicles. “Properand regular maintenance ofa vehicle can help savemoney on repairs down theroad, especially for vehicles

that have reached mile-stones in age and mileage.”

There are many ways tohelp increase your vehicle’slongevity and keep yourpeace of mind intact. Hereare a few tips to help youget the most out of one ofyour largest investments.

MMaakkee iitt yyoouurr rroouuttiinneeJust as regular check-ups

with your doctor areimportant for your ownhealth, heeding regularlyscheduled maintenanceintervals as determined bythe vehicle manufacturer isalso an essential step tohelp keep your vehiclehealthy. Taking your vehi-cle in and having it regular-ly maintained helps tomake sure your vehicle haswhat it needs to keep it run-ning. Of the overall mainte-nance regimen, one of themost frequently missedmaintenance tasks is the oilchange. By changing youroil as recommended by thevehicle manufacturer, youcan help maintain the per-formance of your engine.Regular maintenance andrecommended intervals aretypically outlined in a vehi-cle’s owner’s manual.

TTaakkee iitt eeaassyy

To make sure your vehi-cle can stand the course oftime, it is important toavoid unnecessary strain onthe engine.

“A vehicle that has beensitting for an extended peri-od of time will have next tono oil left on the movingparts of the engine, as it hasaccumulated in the oil pan,”says Hsu. “Allowing yourengine to warm up by eas-ing into acceleration willhelp the oil flow quickerand decrease the amount ofwear and friction-relateddamage that may occur.”

Maybe even more impor-tant than taking it easy onstartup is making sure tonot overexert your vehicle.Constant, high RPMs, shortbraking, high-speed drivingand other severe types ofdriving can lead to acceler-ated engine and transmis-sion wear and potentiallymore substantial issues.

KKeeeepp iitt cclleeaann“When trying to keep a

vehicle running and toextend its life, it is impor-tant to not overlook thebody of the vehicle,” saysHsu.

Consumers’ vehicleslikely take a beating

throughout the year withthe months of harsh winterconditions and corrosiveelements. High tempera-tures, bird droppings, treesap and UV rays in thewarmer months can alsocause damage to the interi-or and exterior of a vehicle.Keeping vehicles clean canhelp protect them from thechemicals and dirt that mayattack the car’s finish andundercarriage.

MMaakkee ssuurree iitt’’ss ccoovveerreeddHaving your vehicle cov-

ered for any issues that mayarise is important, andextended warranty pro-grams are becoming moreand more prevalent. Lastyear alone, Americansbought 250 million extend-ed warranties, according tothe Service ContractIndustry Council. Thereare also different types ofaftermarket warrantiesavailable to consumersthrough the products theyuse; but there is only oneprogram that offersmotorists a full warrantyand the possibility toreceive a cash reward.

Following these simpletips can help promote along life for your vehicle.

TIPS: Ways to have more fun on yournext family vacation

Help keep your car from early retirement

(ARA) - Gas prices are ona roller coaster ride again. Abargain these days is any-thing under $4 a gallon, which is especially difficultsince it’s summer andeveryone’s hitting the roadfor vacations. Inching clos-er is fall’s “back-to-school”drive cycle. In short, thereis a lot of driving ahead andhigher gas prices are nowthe norm, so it’s time tolook at ways to alleviate thepain at the pumps.

A good place to start iseye-level with your feet -your car’s tires. You maylook at tires as black, roundutilitarian objects, but truthbe told, these technicalwonders - when properlymaintained - are gas saviorsthat can slice hundreds ofdollars off your annualgasoline bill, according toDan King, Yokohama TireCorporation’s senior vicepresident of sales and mar-keting.

“The first thing is toalways make sure your tiresare properly inflated,” saysKing. “Tires that are under-inflated by eight pounds persquare inch (psi), for exam-ple, can reduce vehicle fueleconomy by as much as 2percent and tire tread lifecan also be reduced by asmuch as 25 percent.”

King says for the bestdriving savings and safetyresults, make checking thetire pressure a monthly rou-tine. “It only takes five min-utes,” he says. “If you’re notdoing it once a month, chances are you’re drivingon under-inflated tires.”

Use the tire inflationnumbers usually labeled

inside the driver’s door, fueldoor, glove box or in theowner’s manual. (The num-ber on the tire’s sidewall isthe maximum inflationpressure.) Over-inflationreduces the tire’s contactpatch with the road, whileunder-inflation puts extraweight on its sidewalls andcauses an unsafe increase intire temperature.

Certain types of tires -ones with low rolling resist-ance (LRR) - can help savefuel, too. “LRR tires aredesigned to minimize theenergy wasted as heat whilethe tire rolls down theroad,” King says. “Thatresults in improved fuelefficiency. Studies showdriving on LRR tires alonecan save about $100 annu-ally.”

Yokohama’s AVIDENVigor tire is a goodexample of the expandingLRR tire technology. “It’san excellent low rollingresistant tire that saves fueland combines performance, comfort and long treadlife,”King says.

King also offers otherfuel-saving tips:

• Keep your tires proper-ly inflated. Once a month, when the tires are cold (atleast three to four hoursafter the vehicle has beendriven), check tire pressurewith a reliable tire gauge.Be sure that the valve stemshave a plastic or metal capto keep dirt out and sealagainst leakage.

• Replace your air filter.A clogged air filter blocksthe air needed to burn fuelefficiently and wastes gas.

• Keep your car tuned-up

according to the manufac-turer’s recommendedschedule to keep all systemsin good working order, which can optimize yourmileage.

• To prevent skiddingand hydroplaning, tiresmust be replaced when thetread is worn down to 1/16of an inch. An easy test:place a penny into a treadgroove. If part of Lincoln’shead is covered by thetread, you’re driving withthe proper amount of tread. If you can see all of hishead, you should buy a newtire.

• Built-in treadwear indi-

cators, or “wear bars,”which look like narrowstrips of smooth rubberacross the tread will appearon the tire when the tread isworn down to 1/16 of aninch. When you see thesewear bars, the tire is wornout and should be replaced.

• Visually check yourtires for signs of unevenwear. You may have irregu-lar tread wear if there arehigh and low areas orunusually smooth areas.Consult your tire dealer assoon as possible.

• Tires should be rotatedat least every 6,000 to 8,000miles and the alignmentshould be checked once ayear. Misaligned tires cancause the car to scrub, which lowers mileage andcauses unnecessary tirewear.

• Slow down. For everyfive mph you go above 60mph, you’re using more gas, and, ultimately, paying evenmore for each gallon of gas.
