1. AIM This document supplies basic instructions for fitting the crown wheel and pinion assemblies on AUSA machines.

2. SCOPE OF APPLICATION

It is applicable to crown wheels and pinions and especially the pinion and crown wheel assembly that transmits power in the vehicle transmission.

3. INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSEMBLY

The pinion and crown wheel must always be fitted as a matched pair, according to the identification system established by the supplier (marking the components, joint packaging, etc.). This will guarantee that they have been run-in together and the teeth mesh correctly. When fitting the pares crown wheel and pinion, the following points should be taken into consideration:

3.1. Cleanliness

All the components in the differential such as drive shafts (axle casings), spacers, differentials, etc., should be clean and if not, they should be cleaned, if any cast component has sand adhered to its inner walls it should be discarded.

3.2. Adjusting the bearings

Before fitting the bearings, their housings should be checked with adequate callipers, to avoid bearings being fitted with too much or too little clearance.

3.3. Fitting the pinion

The supplier usually marks the deviation (in + or -) from dimension B (theoretical in comparison to the real for each set of gears) on the pinion, see Fig. 1 on the next page. This deviation must be taken into account when determining the shim thicknesses. To calculate the thickness to add to the support base, measure dimension B (Fig. 1 on the next page) from the centre O to the support base of the pinion.

Being: e: Thickness to add BT: Theoretical dimension Bm: Measured dimension d: Deviation of the pinion 0.05 is included as the bearing pre-load. Once the thickness to be used has been determined, the pinion is fitted to its support, although the mesh between pinion and crown wheel should be checked.

3.2. Fitting the crown wheel The crown wheel is normally fitted to the differential casing, the support base of the crown wheel will be located at the nominal distance, dimension A±0,1, from the centre of convergence of the assembly, point O, adjusting with shims, on face C in Fig. 1. In the case of the shafts, adjustment will be carried out by nuts.

3.3. Adjusting the crown wheel and pinion

Once the crown wheel and pinion has been fitted, the mesh between both of them should be checked, to do this, 4 or 5 teeth on the crown wheel will be painted with engineer’s blue and turned freely, without load to mark the contact area of the teeth (mesh). This should be de 1/3 a 1/2 the total length of the pinion tooth. This contact area on the crown wheel should be centred in Klingenberg-type teeth, and shifted towards the inner limit (without reaching it) in Gleason-type teeth. In real life, in both cases the deformation produced when loading the assembly will produce the correct mesh. The correct mesh should be determined with the pinion support well bolted. Also check with a dial gauge, that the play between teeth at the highest part of the crown wheel is from 0.1 to 0.2 mm once fitted without the cover, fit the cover and lower the differential tightening nut until it is in contact with the bearing and pre-load it by turning the two teeth of the nut. On the next page, you will see the correct mesh for both types of teeth, as well as examples of incorrect meshes.
