It all started with the College course. Now I’m running my own business”“

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT

Shane was creating balloon art at parties when someone suggested he try his hand at floristry.

“I signed up at College to try a new hobby and now that hobby has become my full-time career. Someone suggested I try the beginners’ floristry course. I enjoyed that so much I enrolled on the wedding floristry course and now I run my own business.

“The courses helped me get started and get a job in the industry so I could continue to learn my trade. I loved the rewarding feeling of learning all the time and the courses taught me something new each week.”

Shane tried something new and enjoyed it enough to turn it into a successful business.

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT

I wanted to develop my passion for exercise into a part-time role to keep me busy after I retired”“

With the end of her career with the NHS in sight, Maureen was determined to start afresh in a career that focussed on her love of exercise and fitness.

“I recently completed the Level 2 Certificate in fitness instructing with the aim of getting myself started in a new industry. I was approaching retirement from a demanding role and felt I needed a new set of goals, I knew a new qualification would help me get started.

“I chose the Active IQ fitness instructing qualification and took up part-time work at a local women-only gym, which I loved. I’ve really got the bug now – my sights are firmly set on completing the Level 3 course as soon as I can.”

Maureen got the qualification she needed and is now enjoying a new career.

“There were some apprenticeship vacancies coming up at a local council so I spoke to the College and soon completed three short courses designed to prepare me for the role. From there I secured a week’s training at the council, working across lots of different departments.

“I worked hard and got the full-time role at the Council as well as progressing on to a Level 2 Business Administration apprenticeship at the College.”

Graduates can go straight into work at this point or take a further one or two years of study at university to gain a full Honours degree.

Business with Information Systems

It’s now widely accepted that the human factor is crucial when developing technology-based business systems. Ignore what people need and the business objective will be well and truly lost.

Hence the focus of this new course, which develops an understanding of business while building skills for effective problem solving. Communication is key when your aim is to blend technical solutions with human-centred systems.

Computing Technologies – Media Systems

Gain an understanding of computer-based technologies and how they relate to media. Learn about web-based systems and HCI, web applications, mobile technologies and entertainment systems. You’ll develop skills and knowledge in media integration and computer systems – and study for a career pathway in the diverse entertainment industry.

On completion you may opt for an additional year of study at university, to gain an Honours degree, or go straight into this exciting world as an animator or game designer, interactive writer, sound producer or web developer.

Computing Technologies – Networks

Discover how computer-based technologies relate to network systems. Study core modules of networks and wireless basics, plus specialisms like advanced networking. Develop skills and knowledge in network design, implementation and configuration – and put it all to the test on a live IT project.

On completion you can continue at university for an additional year to gain an Honours degree or head straight into the industry as a network administrator, systems engineer, programmer, wireless specialist or cloud computing developer.

Part-time Higher EducationOur Foundation degrees can be taken part time over two or three years. Awarded by the University of Hertfordshire and focused firmly on the skills you need for success, they’re the perfect choice if you’re juggling study with work or family commitments.

Sports Studies

With increasing awareness of the dangers of ill health and obesity, sport plays a growing role in society and our everyday lives. This also creates many new opportunities to work in this area.

If you want a career in the sports and exercise industry, this course will give you the professional knowledge and skills you need. It covers a diverse range of units with three main themes: sports coaching, sports management and development and sport and fitness development.

Entry criteria: BTEC National Diploma in Early Years, Health and Social Care or equivalent Level 3 qualification, plus English and maths at grade C or above.

Health and Social Care – HNC

This HNC (Higher National Certificate) develops the skills and qualities required for working in Care and Early Years settings. Equivalent to the first year of Foundation or Honours degree, it is studied part time over one year. From here you can progress to the HND (Higher National Diploma).

Awarded by Pearson and valued highly by employers, the HNC combines theory with work experience placements in a variety of professional settings – offering an invaluable insight into education, health and welfare services.
