GENERAL ENHANCEMENTS

Listed below are general enhancementsmade to Mastercam2020 for SOLIDWORKS. This includes improvements toselection and other functions not specific to one product line.

Bounding Box

While access to the Bounding Box function remains available fromnumerous other areas inMastercam for SOLIDWORKS, you cannow create a bounding box by selecting the function from the CADFunctionsmenu on theMastercam2020 tab.

Bounding Box also nowhas a new interface, which you can learnmore about on "NewUser Interface for Analyze Toolpath and CADFunctions" on page 13.

The newBounding Box function panel comeswithmany enhancements:

l Anchors the bounding box to a defined origin.

l Creates a new tool plane that uses the bounding box's origin and the orientation alignment.

l Aligns the bounding box orientation without having to change the construction plane. You can set it relative tothe construction plane, the largest flattest face of the selected solid body, a selected face, or a customgnomonorientation.

l Displays the volume of the generated bounding box.

What's New in Mastercam 2020 for SOLIDWORKS®—General Enhancements

Code ExpertThe search function in Code Expert includes two new features:

l Recall previous searches by clicking the arrownext to the search term field. The previous search terms aresaved per Code Expert session.

l You can choose to search backward instead of forward by clicking the new Find Previous button.

License Search at StartupThe License to search for at Startup option on the License Search at Startup page in theMastercam AdvancedConfiguration dialog box now includes newoptions to allow you to search for a local or network software license.

Mastercam Simulator EnhancementsListed below are enhancementsmade to Mastercam Simulator.

l Two newoptions have been added to the Simulator page in the System Configuration dialog box:

l Go to home position on tool plane change: Moves the tool to a home position between operationswhen there is a plane change.

l Simulate disabled posting: Enables the simulation of operations for which posting has been disabled.

l The Use Mastercam colors option, available on the Graphics page, will inherit colors set inMastercam forSOLIDWORKS and the color settings inMastercam Simulator will be disabled.

l Mastercam Simulator now colors workpieces, including those made up of several different models (surfaces,solids, or meshes), as one singular color making it easier to identify themduring sessions.

l The stockmodel color that is set on the Stock Definition page of the Stock model dialog box nowdisplays inMastercam Simulator.

l Edge highlighting has been improved for stockmodels, workpieces, and fixtures.


l In previousMastercam for SOLIDWORKS versions, Mastercam Simulator displayed collisions when verifyingback feed rate/microlift toolmotion. Microlift moves are now correctly checked and will be identified inMastercam Simulator if they encounter material.

Rotary Axis PositioningMastercam Simulator, when using Verifymode, now simulates the Rotary axis positioning option located on theRotary Axis Control page of toolpaths. This allows you to simulate and visualize multiaxismovement of the machinetool. When this option is enabled, Mastercam Simulator will:

l Display the rotation of stock between tool planes.

l Display the tool axis orientation.

l Display cuttingmoves in the rotated tool plane.

New User Interface for Analyze Toolpath and CAD FunctionsAnalyze Toolpath and some CAD functions nowuse the same panel interfaces as the stand-alone Mastercamproduct.

The included CAD functions are:

l Silhouette Boundary and Turn Profile (Formerly Create Boundary, see "Silhouette Boundary and Turn Profile"on page 15 for more information)

l Bounding Box

l Create Letters

l Roll-Unroll

These newpanels give you the option to clickOK to finish the operation and exit the function, or clickOK and CreateNew Operation to finish the operation and start a newone without restarting the function.


Additionally, the new interface offersmore robust tooltips to help you with each option without requiring you to openthe Mastercam for SOLIDWORKS Help. Simply hover over each parameter to view the tooltip.

Selection Enhancements

Point ManagerThe Point Manager now supports the selection of lines and cylindrical faces, as well as points.

Sort OptionsThe ChainManager now supports chain sorting. Select the Sorting Options button located on the Chains tab to openthe Sorting dialog box. You can then choose your sort method, which allows you to sort points in the selected chainsaccording to a pre-set pattern.

Additionally, you can now select a center of rotation when using the Rotary Sortmethod for circular patterns duringselection.

Silhouette Boundary and Turn ProfileCreate Boundary has been split into two separate functions: Silhouette Boundary and Turn Profile. Both functionsemploy the newpanel interface (See "NewUser Interface for Analyze Toolpath and CAD Functions" on page 13 formore information).

Silhouette Boundary creates a boundary curve around a set of geometry and projects a 2D sketch around theselected geometry onto the currently selected plane. Use this function to create a tool containment boundary fortoolpaths.

Turn Profile generates a profile by rotating a solid around the current WCS X axis, or Lathe Z axis, or by creating across-section (slice) through the selected geometry in the XY plane.


System ConfigurationListed below are enhancements to options found in the System Configuration dialog box, accessed by selectingConfiguration on theMastercam2020 tab

Chain HighlightingWhen viewing chains in the ChainManager, the chains are highlighted in the graphics window. In previous versions ofMastercam for SOLIDWORKS, you could not control the color of this highlight. InMastercam2020 for SOLIDWORKS,you can use Chain highlight in the Colors page to control the highlight color.

Color OptionsExpanded color options are available in the System Configuration dialog box. These colors display in various areas ofMastercam for SOLIDWORKS.

Use the Tools and holder page to set colors for lathe, mill, and router tools .

Use the Simulation Display page to set colors for collisions, fixtures, and sections. These colors only apply toMastercam Simulator.

Toolpaths ManagerListed below are enhancementsmade to the ToolpathsManager.

DependenciesThe Dependencies group has beenmoved from the Display Options dialog box to the ToolpathsManager toolbarand to theMastercam2020 tab. The newDependencies drop-down allows you to pick one or both of the following:

l Selection: Selects all dependent operations when you select the parent operation.

l Regeneration: Regenerates all dependent operations when you regenerate the parent operation, even if thedependent operations are not selected.


To enable these options, select the Dependencies button on the ToolpathsManager or theMastercam2020 tab.Then, select the drop-down on theMastercam2020 tab to select one or both of the available options.

When enabled, the button has a dark background.

Shortcut KeysThe following shortcut keys (hotkeys) are now available when your mouse is inside the ToolpathsManager:

[E] Expands or collapses all operations

[L] Toggles toolpath locking on selected operations

[P] Toggles posting on selected operations

[T] Toggles toolpath display for selected operations

[Delete] Deletes selected operation

[Up arrow] Moves the insert arrowup

[Left arrow] Positions in the insert arrow after selected operation or group

[Right arrow] Scrolls through the list to make the insert arrow visible

[Ctrl+C] Copies selected operations

[Ctrl+X] Cuts selected operations

[Ctrl+V] Pastes cut or copied operations

[Ctrl+A] Selects all operations

TrueType® FontsMastercam for SOLIDWORKS now supports single-stroke TrueType fonts for Create Letters (in the Toolpath Utilitiesdrop-downmenu).

Mastercam for SOLIDWORKS also includes a new single-stroke font called OLF Simple Sans CJK OC. This font is similar toArial and has over 35,000 characters including 400 glyphs supporting English and Romance languages, 200 Cyrilliccharacters, 300 Greek/Coptic characters, 70 Hebrew characters, several hundred accented Latin characters, and over33,000 Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters.

Additional Enhancementsl You can print a label for each instance of a part on a nested sheet. Select Create label data for each nestedpart on the Options dialog box for Automatic Toolpathing (ATP).


MILL ENHANCEMENTS

Listed below are enhancementsmade to the Mill product. These include improvements to 2D, 3D, andMultiaxistoolpaths.

Additional Catalog PropertiesWhen creating a tool, you can view amore extensive list of size properties. To access these properties, use the MillToolManager to create a tool, and then select the Standard Sizes drop-down.


Tools that display additional properties are Tap, Drill, Spot drill, Center drill, and Brad point drill. This functionality isalso available in the stand-alone ToolManager.

Check HolderA new function, Check Holder, has been added to Mastercam for SOLIDWORKS. Use Check Holder to check anoperation's tool holder for interference with the part. It calculates areas where there are interferences between theholder and the part, and tells you the minimum tool length required to avoid it. Before starting Check Holder, selectthe desired operation in the ToolpathsManager.

Check Holder is located in the Toolpath Utilitiesmenu on theMastercam2020 tab.


Hole-making EnhancementsNOTEYoumust have aMultiaxis license to access this functionality.

The Multiaxis Drill and Circle Mill toolpaths have been removed fromMastercam2020 for SOLIDWORKS. Helix Bore,ThreadMill, 2D Drill, and 2D Circle Mill toolpaths nowhave multiaxis capability, accessed through the Tool AxisControl page in their respective toolpath dialog boxes.

Additionally, if you open a file created in a previous version of Mastercam for SOLIDWORKS that had Entity type setto Points/Lines, the selection now retains the lines and will display them in the Toolpath Hole Definition panel.

If you are creating a 4-axis or 5-axis toolpath, you can also access the Safety Zone page.

On the Linking Parameter page, you can choose to calculate incremental values fromholes and lines, or calculate thedepth from the top of the holes and lines.


2D EnhancementsListed below are enhancementsmade to 2D toolpath types.

Override Geometry Diameter

A newoption, Override geometry diameter, has been added for HelixBore, ThreadMill, and Circle Mill toolpaths. This newoption, located onthe Cut Parameters page, allows you to override all of the selectedgeometry's diameter information and forces the output to the specifiedCircle diameter (Helix Bore and Circle Mill) orMajor/Minor threaddiameter (ThreadMill).

This option is only enabled when arcs, solid arcs, or cylindrical features are selected.

Spring Passes and OverlapSpring passes (set on theMulti Passes page) and Overlap (set on the Lead In/Out page) now correctly worktogether inMastercam2020 for SOLIDWORKS for Contour, Pocket, Model Chamfer, and Dynamic Contour toolpaths.Overlap is applied to the final spring pass.

In previousMastercam for SOLIDWORKS releases, Spring passes did not support Overlap and youwould receive anerror when generating the toolpath.

3D EnhancementsListed below are enhancementsmade to 3D toolpath types.

Curve SupportEqual Scallop and Scallop toolpaths now include the ability to select Curves on the Toolpath Control page.

When selected, the toolpath is created outward using the curves as a starting point.

Dragging and Dropping Toolpath GeometryWhen dragging geometry fromone 3D HST operation to another in the ToolpathsManager, the pop-upmenu nowdisplaysmore options for copied geometry.


After dragging the geometry, select one of the following options:

l Add geometry: Adds the copied geometry to the geometry that exists in the selected operations.

l Add geometry and stock to leave values: Adds the copied geometry and their stock to leave values to thegeometry that exists in the selected operations.

l Replace geometry: Deletes the existing geometry for the selected toolpath, replacing it with the copiedgeometry.

l Replace geometry and stock to leave values: Deletes the existing geometry for the selected toolpath,replacing it with the copied geometry and its stock to leave values.

l Replace geometry for all selected operations: Deletes the existing geometry for all selected toolpaths,replacing it with the copied geometry.

l Replace geometry and stock to leave values all selected operations: Deletes the existing geometry for allselected toolpaths, replacing it with the copied geometry and its stock to leave values.

New 3D Blend ToolpathA new toolpath, Blend, has been added to the 3D High Speed suite of toolpaths. SelectMill toolpaths, Surface highspeed toolpath, Blend from the ToolpathsManager right-click menu.

Blend is based on the Surface Finish Blend toolpath; however it is faster and has a superior quality. Blend also includesbenefits such as the use of stock and holder checking.

Offset StrategyTwo newoptions, Closed offsets and Trimmed offsets, are available in the Toolpath Control page for Equal Scallopand Scallop toolpaths.

Closed offsets use the following options to drive the toolpath:

l Boundary chains

l Curves

l Machining geometry (outer shape only)

l Z depth (on the Steep/Shallow page)

l Angle (on the Steep/Shallow page)

The toolpath is created with closed passes. This yields a traditional Scallop toolpath. The following image shows atoolpath with Closed offsets enabled and the blue spline as the selected Curves.


Trimmed offsets enablesMastercam for SOLIDWORKS to drive the toolpath from the selected Curves or the outershape of theMachining geometry. The toolpath is then generated across the entireMachining geometry shape,and the resultingmotion is trimmed to the following:

l Boundary chains

l Angle (on the Steep/Shallow page)

l Z depth (on the Steep/Shallow page)

The following image shows a toolpath with Trimmed offset enabled and the blue spline as the selected Curves.

Silhouette BoundaryA newoption, Include silhouette boundary, has been added to the Toolpath Control page.

When you select this option, Mastercam for SOLIDWORKSwill create a silhouette boundary around the selectedMachining geometry. This will be used as a containment boundary in addition to any Boundary chains that you haveselected. Mastercam for SOLIDWORKS uses the Projected boundary smoothing tolerance option, the Containoptions, and the Compensate to options when generating the silhouette boundaries. These options are also foundon the Toolpath Control page.

Tool ContainmentTool containment options are now available for Equal Scallop and Hybrid toolpaths on the Toolpath Control page.Select one of the following:

l Tool tip: Confines the tool center inside the containment boundary.

l Tool contact point: Confines the tool contact points inside the containment boundary. The tool center may runoutside the selected boundary, but the contact point of the tool will not.


Z Depth EnhancementsThe Steep/Shallow page has new Z depth options. The Use Z depths checkbox has been replaced by separatecheckboxes forMinimum depth andMaximum depth. This allows you to turn themon separately so you canmakeadjustments to only one option.

Mastercam 2019 for SOLIDWORKS Mastercam 2020 for SOLIDWORKS

The Steep/Shallow page for Waterline, Hybrid, Area Roughing, and Dynamic OptiRough toolpaths has a newoption,Adjust for stock to leave.

When you select Adjust for stock to leave, Mastercam for SOLIDWORKS adjusts the toolpath based on the valuesentered in the Floor stock column forMachining geometry in theModel Geometry page by the following:

l All positive values: Mastercam for SOLIDWORKS uses the largest (most positive) value to adjust bothMinimumdepth andMaximum depth.

l All negative values: Mastercam for SOLIDWORKS uses the largest (most negative) value to adjust bothMinimum depth andMaximum depth.

l Both positive and negative values: Mastercam for SOLIDWORKS uses the most positive Z value to adjust theMinimum depth and the most negative Z value to adjust theMaximum depth.

Multiaxis EnhancementsListed below are enhancementsmade to Multiaxis toolpath types.

DeburrThe Deburr toolpath includes the following enhancements:

On the Cut Pattern page, you nowhave an to option to set aClimb or Conventional cutting direction.

l Climb cuts in one direction with the tool rotating in the opposite direction of the toolmotion.

l Conventional cuts in one direction with the tool rotating in the same direction as the toolmotion.

On the Advanced Auto Edge Detection page, you can now limit the detection area by a set height or by selecting theLimit detection area by height option and setting the necessary parameters.

Swarf MillingA newdrop-down, Orientation, is now available on the Cut Pattern page for Swarf Milling toolpaths. This option ishelpful in the cases where you need to realign the operation's orientation fromworld Z to theWCS or Tool Plane.

This newoption allows you to choose the plane that you want to orient the operation to. Previously, youmodified theorientation by using the Planes page in theMultiaxis Toolpath - Swarf Milling dialog box.


The Normal to guide curve option is also available under the Strategy drop-down on the Cut Pattern page. Byselecting this option, all edges are automatically obtained from the selected part surface when cutting.

Additional Enhancementsl Mastercam2020 for SOLIDWORKS includes processing speed improvements to the DynamicMill toolpath, 3Dhigh speed toolpath linking steps, and the 5-axis Curve toolpath.

l Mastercam2020 for SOLIDWORKS includes improvements to the Projected boundary smoothing toleranceoption on the Toolpath Control page.

l You can nowhave multiple Air region chains, instead of only one perMachining region for DynamicMill andAreaMill toolpaths.

Listed below are Lathe enhancementsmade to Mastercam2020 for SOLIDWORKS.

3D ToolingNOTEYou cannot create 3D tools inMastercam for SOLIDWORKS; however they are supported for use intoolpaths. You can also view 3D tools when using Classic Backplot or Mastercam Simulator.

3D tooling, which was introduced for Mastercam2019 for SOLIDWORKS, nowhas new 3D tool icons in the tool lists tohelp distinguish between 3D and non-3D tools.

Filters for Inserts and HoldersYou can now filter inserts and holders by attributes. In the Lathe ToolManager, select either Insert Filter or HolderFilter.

Use the dialog box to filter your selections by selecting attributes you are looking for. After clickingOK, only itemsthat match that criteria will display in the ToolManager.

Improved Chuck Jaw DefinitionsMastercam2020 for SOLIDWORKS includes improvements to chuck jaw definitions. Parametric jaw definitions aremore powerful and flexible. The following enhancements have been added:

l Support for pie-shaped jaws in addition to rectangular-shaped jaws.

l Define asmany steps as required, set the dimensions of each jaw individually, and add a radius to the step.

l Change the mounting orientation with easily reversible steps.


l Live preview showing the overall shape of the jaw and its total dimensions.

Previous versions of Mastercam for SOLIDWORKS limited you to a fixed set of seven possible reference positions (fouroutside diameter, three inside diameter) to identify the location where the jaws clamp the part. InMastercam2020for SOLIDWORKS, you can select any point on the profile. The reference point is included in the live preview of thejaws.
