What's The Difference Between General AnaesthesiaAnd Local Anaesthesia?
General anaesthesia is a state of controlled unconsciousness that is administered to a
patient when undergoing some treatment, during which you feel nothing and have no
memory of whatever happened during the process. Local anaesthesia on the other hand is
administered directly to that small part of the body that needs to be treated. The patient is
conscious and can respond to both verbal and physical instructions from the doctor and
people around.
General anaesthesia is mostly used during major operations on the lungs, brain, heart, or
abdomen. This helps in saving the patients from the terrifying experiences and pain during
the process. Local anaesthesia is used on minor medical procedures such as tooth extraction
or a root canal, and minor eye operations such as cataract removal among others.
General anaesthesia can only be administered by a specialist doctor who’s supported by a
team of trained staff such as theatre nurses, operating department practitioner and
recovery room staff who takes care of the patient until the end of the operation. Local
anaesthesia can be administered by dentists, anaesthetists and other doctors and can be
given in form of injections, creams sprays or ointments.

General anaesthesia will esquire a lot of preparations since it involves major treatment
procedures which will also take a long time to complete. The medication may also take time
to respond unlike in local anaesthesia where fewer preparations take place. The treatment

General anaesthesia has more risks than the local one. Older people are at a higher risk of

has temporary side effects like dizziness, blurred vision, headaches, drowsiness, weakness
or pins and needles.
