Inquiring Minds Want To Know:

Jesus said that the Law would not disappear until everything in it is

accomplished.

Since Jesus came to fulfill the Law, is it now abolished?

Page 18: What’s so new about the new covenant? (OT/NT Synthesis)

ESV Mark 7:15-19 ~ There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him . . . ESV Acts 15:24-18 (Council) ~ Since we have heard that some persons have gone out from us and troubled you with words, unsettling your minds, although we gave them no instructions . . .it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay on you no greater burden than these requirements . . .

Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, "You are my Son, today I have begotten you"; as he says also in another place, "You are a priest forever, after the

order of Melchizedek.”— Hebrews 5:5-6

order of Melchizedek.”— Hebrews 5:5-6

And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being

designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek.

— Hebrews 5:9-10

— Hebrews 5:9-10

We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind

the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after

the order of Melchizedek.— Hebrews 6:19-20

Page 36: What’s so new about the new covenant? (OT/NT Synthesis)

For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham . . . and blessed him,  and to

him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything . . . And those descendants of Levi who

receive the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people . . . But this man who

does not have his descent from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.  It is beyond dispute that the inferior is blessed by the

superior . . . One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham,  for he

was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him.

— Hebrews 7:1-10 (ESV)

Page 37: What’s so new about the new covenant? (OT/NT Synthesis)

ESV Hebrews 7:11 ~ Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron?
