A Viking’s Guide to Deadly Dragons18 June – 9 October 2016

Are you looking for an epic adventure this summer? Join us at Tullie House for this major exhibition from Seven Stories based on the bestselling How to Train Your Dragon books by Cressida Cowell.

A Viking’s Guide to Deadly Dragons will transport you back in time to the Dark Ages, a world where Vikings ruled and dragons roamed. With Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third as your unlikely hero, discover the tribe of Hairy Hooligans, his island home of Berk, his hunting dragon Toothless and his quest to become a hero the hard way.

Dare to explore the wild dragon cliffs, sail on a Viking longship, share epic yarns in the Great Hall and learn to speak Dragonese in this hands on exhibition – a must for big and little Viking warriors!

We have lots of exciting activities planned this summer, from sleepovers, drop ins and parties to a Deadly Dragons Family Festival, all starting with an action packed launch day on Saturday 18 June! See page 8 for more details, or pick up our Summer Activities leaflet from the museum.

Admission: £3.30 Adults, £2.00 Children

The State Management StoryCarlisle pubs under state control 1916 –1973

16 July – 4 September 2016

Marking the centenary of the introduction of the State Management Scheme to Carlisle in 1916, this exhibition will explore the intriguing story of the centralisation of pubs and breweries in Carlisle under government control.

In an attempt to curb the increase in drunken behaviour triggered by the influx of rail and munitions workers to Carlisle during the First World War, many of Carlisle’s pubs, breweries and drinking establishments were closed down. The pubs that remained were strictly regulated to reduce excessive drinking.

Follow the development of games, food and entertainment as aspects of pub culture, and find out how the legacy of the State Management Scheme still remains present in Carlisle today. This exhibition is a collaborative project between Tullie House Museum and the Carlisle City Business Group.

Tullie Explorer’s Gallery21 May – 10 July 2016

We’re transforming the first floor Exhibitions Gallery into a discovery play space inspired by our collections! There will be four areas for children to get hands on and creative in: nature play, history play, arty play and soft play.

In nature play you can examine the specimens in our collection, play giant snakes and ladders and go bug hunting! In history play there’s dressing up, a castle play set to explore and you can go digging in our archaeology sand table. Get creative in our arty play area, with lots of crafts to enjoy and spaces to draw and explore. And as if that wasn’t enough there will be seating for adults and soft play equipment to enjoy!

We would love your feedback on this temporary space as we’re hoping to open a children’s gallery in the future, so let us know what you think.

Museum admission charges apply.

TUESDAY LUNCHTIME LECTURESTalks Start at 1pm in the Lecture Theatre, and last approximately 30 minutes.

Our popular programme of engaging lunchtime talks continues. Admission is free and there is no need to book, but please arrive promptly to secure a seat. We aim to offer a varied programme of talks, and the opinions and views shared by our speakers do not represent the views of Tullie House.

The Lecture Theatre is equipped with induction loops and wheelchair access is available. If you have any specific requirements, please contact us on 01228 618718 and we will make suitable arrangements for you.

We welcome ideas for future lectures and speakers, so please send your suggestions to [email protected]

We will remember themTuesday 3 May

The building of war memorials after the First World War represents the greatest single project of public art the country has ever seen. There are estimated to be about 1,000 1914-18 war memorials in the county in varying formats; cenotaph, plaque, figurative sculpture, stained glass or scroll. This talk by Stephen White from Carlisle Library looks at the finest examples of Cumbrian war memorial art and examines some of the issues relating to wording and design.

The Embroiderer’s GuildTuesday 7 June

The Embroiderer’s Guild was formed in 1906 to ‘keep up a good standard of work and design’. Over the years it has developed from elitist beginnings and now welcomes anyone with a love of textiles. The Guild has an important collection of around 11,000 pieces of traditional, ethnic and contemporary embroideries and a nationwide network of branches. This talk, delivered by Gill Goodfellow, is part of the Cumberland Branch Diamond Jubilee celebrations, so join us to discover some of the treasures of the Guild Collections.

More Than Just Lifeboats - The RNLI & the December 2015 Floods.Tuesday 5 July

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution has six divisional flood rescue teams, made up of about 250 volunteer lifeboat crew members. Specially trained for the risks involved when working in or around fast moving flood water, these crews were integral to the rescue efforts during the Cumbrian floods of recent years. This introductory talk by Carlisle RNLI Chairman David Edwards will give some background information about the flood rescue team, as well as an introduction to how the RNLI is evolving to be ‘more than just lifeboats’.

State Management Myth and RealityTuesday 2 August

To mark 100 years since the State Management Scheme was introduced in Carlisle, Viv Dodd from the State Management Story reveals some of the myths and realities behind the evolution of the scheme, and explores the impact of the government’s control of pubs and breweries in Carlisle from 1916 to 1973.

Tales of the Frontier: Wall Stories Saturday 28 May, 2pm – 4pm Lecture Theatre Free, Booking advisable

Hadrian’s Wall has dominated the northern landscape for nearly two millennia. Today, visitors are guided towards the forts, and tend to focus on the military aspects of the monument. But there is much more to this World Heritage site than Roman swords and sandals. Throughout its long history, the Wall has influenced and inspired both the communities who lived in its shadow, and the people who came to wonder at it. In this half-day session, join the Durham University Archaeology Department to celebrate the unique cultural landscape of Hadrian’s Wall as part of their ‘Tales of the Frontier’ project. Can we change your perception of the Wall as simply a ‘military frontier’? The afternoon will begin with a presentation by Professor Richard Hingley, Professor of Archaeology at Durham University, followed by a more informal discussion around the themes explored in the projects ‘Wall Stories’ leaflets, which can be picked up from Tullie House or downloaded from talesofthefrontier.org. ‘Wall Stories’ explores the people and places, past and present, that have been shaped by the monument.

Book now to find out more about this fascinating monument, and share your own experiences and ideas.

Vikings Revealed: Cumwhitton and beyond…Saturday 9 July, 1pm – 5pm Lecture Theatre£15/£12 Concessions and Members

The Vikings left their mark on our region in many ways. These include treasure hoards, burials, place names and sculpture in the landscape. Join us for an afternoon of talks exploring some of the themes raised in our new ‘Vikings Revealed’ gallery, which displays the results of the excavation and investigative conservation of the finds from Cumwhitton where six Viking burials were found. Speakers include Tim Padley, our Curator of Archaeology and staff from Oxford Archaeology North who carried out the excavations and published the report on the site that brought the various strands of research together.
