...in this case, in our mouths at the Haney Farmers Market’s fundraising dinner at Maple Ridge Senior Secondary School, Wednesday, April 13, at 6 pm. With a warm winter, produce is early; delicious dishes are planned to showcase the farmers of Maple Ridge.
Chef Trevor Randle and his Culinary Arts students are welcoming Chef de Cuisine Mark Hills of Hills Foods into their kitchen. Together they will create a dinner for you to enjoy.
Chef Randle is a proponent of Agriculture in the Classroom and Take a Bite of BC programs teaching his students about the vital connection between farm and food.
“The school has a thriving kitchen garden, strong support from SD 42 and the community”, said Chef Randle. “Our public dinners on Thursdays are always full.”
Chef de Cuisine Mark Hills, a BC Restaurant Hall of Fame recipient, is well known for his continuing effort to promote and provide sustainable, organic
and alternative meat sources as well as support to young aspiring chefs.
Haney Farmers Market is a lively Saturday morning market in Memorial Peace Park on 224th whose vision encourages a healthy community providing the public with direct access to food producers, along with stimulating and supporting the local economy, providing opportunities to inform and entertain and to encourage environmental sustainability.
There will be a cash bar, lively music by Shades of Green, silent auction and time to have a wacky photo taken of you and your friends in the popular Black Box Photo Booth. All proceeds go to the work of the Haney Farmers Market.
Tickets are $35 for an elegant dinner and a complimentary drink and must be purchased by April 5.

Method
Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas 5.Grease and line two 23cm/9in cake tins with the melted butter.Line the bottom of the two cake tins with a circle of greaseproof paper. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until pale and creamy, using an electric whisk or a wooden spoon. Beat well to get lots of air into the mixture (this should take a couple of minutes). Beat in the eggs one at a time and the vanilla extract. Add a tablespoon of flour if the mixture curdles. Fold in the flour and then the pistachio nuts (leave some for decorating). Pour the mixture equally between the two cake tins. Place in the oven and bake for about 20 minutes, or until the cakes spring back when pressed gently with a finger and are pale golden in colour. Remove from the oven and take them out of the tins after about 5-10 minutes. Place them on a wire rack to cool completely (for about half an hour). Spread the sponge with the jam or fresh raspberries and whipped cream, then carefully sandwich together. Decorate the top with whipped cream, a sprinkle with chopped pistachios and dot with fresh raspberries.

Some members like making the trains, while others focus on the buildings, and some prefer to do scenery and backdrops. The diorama displays the CPR along the Fraser River from Hammond to Ruskin and the recent addition of sound brings back memories of the old steam locomotives. During the open house, the Members run several trains at once and can answer questions for those interested in building layouts of their own.

The privilege of recognizing and celebrating the rich historical legacy of Maple Ridge is the mandate of the Maple Ridge Community Heritage Commission. The Commission (CHC) supports the sustainable development of our urban and rural spaces and participates in the growth of our healthy community.
CHC members are appointed by City Council and the Maple Ridge Historical Society to connect our community’s past to its future through programs and partnerships that acknowledge tangible and intangible heritage. The Annual Heritage Awards are a feature of February Heritage Week. In 2016, Golden Ears Transition Initiative was commended for choosing heritage as a theme in the 2015 GETIFest celebrations. Maple Ridge Family History Group was also commended for excellence in producing the Edge Legacy family history project to enhance our understanding of community history.
Contribution to the Preservation of Historical Collections. Tim has brought several important items to the Maple Ridge Museum and Community Archives from private collections. For maintaining the health of a cultural institution since 1901, and for staging CountryFest for more than a century, Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Agricultural Association was recognized with the Stewardship of a Community Cultural Asset Award.
Award. This year Daphne and Francis Sleigh were recognized for their outstanding contributions to Maple Ridge and British Columbia history.
In the last two years the CHC has undertaken several projects. A local historian was commissioned to compile a history of the Heritage Awards. The Tenth Anniversary of the Maple Ridge Heritage Plaque Program book was digitized and added to the mapleridge.ca website. We are creating an inventory
of heritage plaques, art, signage and information panels to track installation maintenance history. We look forward to seeing how the public may also make use of the data to tell new stories about Maple Ridge.
We initiate and support services and educational opportunities to enrich community life. An ongoing project is the digitization of our municipal records from 1874 on, enhancing access by researchers to our earliest history. We are also preparing to update the Heritage Inventory of Maple Ridge’s Heritage Assets. You can plan on joining the CHC in April for a heritage

From our observations, we are able to follow the child and determine their needs. Maria Montessori stated, “Follow the child, but follow the child as his leader.” We provide the opportunities to learn, grow, and develop in a safe and carefully prepared environment. The environment is created with the child in mind, considering both his current development and his future needs. We respect the child and his natural progression, honouring his spirit and independence.

“My family, consisting of my wife, three daughters and I arrived in Canada on the nines. The 9th day, of the 9th month, of 2009. Coming to Canada my goal was always to be in the media industry as it was my background in Trinidad & Tobago. After working for two of the largest and wonderful media organizations in Canada, Corus Entertainment, owner of radio stations
including CKNW and CFOX, and Glacier Media, owner of newspapers including the former TriCities Now, the TriCity News and the Burnaby Now, the opportunity has presented itself for me to utilize the training and experience that I have received, and marry that with the world of entertainment that I have always loved. Being an avid movie buff, even at one point hosting my own movie review website, having this magazine will be a great way to marry my expertise of media sales, with my love of the entertainment industry, that includes movies, music and local events. Also, being an entrepreneur in the industry that I have known for more than two decades will mean that it is more than just a job for me. I will be doing something that I intensely love to do. And I’m glad to realize that dream with What’s On! Coquitlam South.Working with Glacier Media I was able to work within the Coquitlam community and assist in producing publications including the Coquitlam Program Guide put out by the City of Coquitlam, the TriCities Health Guide, and the TriCities Chamber of Commerce Map, so getting to know the various business and establishing those connections and servicing their needs are a great part of why I look forward to providing a new outlet to help them establish their goals. I’m also looking forward to meeting all the community groups in a community I love and am proud to call home! Our Mission Statement: To provide an entertaining voice to the community and to deliver a viable additional outlet for local businesses to reach and interact with potential customers.”

“There’s so much that I love about my What’s On! magazine business, from meeting so many people, to hearing the positive feedback, to putting it all together. I think the best part though, is when the magazines are delivered and I open the first box to see the new magazine. Very exciting to see it! Something I created!”Cathy Minler, What’s On!
