David Jolly wants to test promising
juvenile Allez Sur Le Gris in
Saturday’s SAJC Lightning
Stakes (Listed, 1050m) at
Morphettville for two and three-year-olds but
the South Australian trainer is already looking
towards the autumn with the daughter of
Puissance De Lune (Shamardal).
Allez Sur Le Gris, who won her first start
over 1100 metres at Gawler on July 11, is
expected to be joined by stablemate, the three-
year-old Streetcar Stranger (Stratum), but Jolly
yesterday indicated his third entry, Calypso
Reign (Barbados), would not take his place in
the $100,000 race.
Jolly has already locked in Kayla Crowther,
who partnered the homebred filly in the
1100-metre Benchmark 66 two-year-old race,
to ride Allez Sur Le Gris again on the weekend.
“She won quite well at Gawler and she’d
trialled well leading into that. She showed quite
surprising speed to lead, being by Puissance De Continued on page 2>>

Lune out of a Reset mare (Goon Serpent) who
was better known as a miler,” Jolly said.
“She also showed a bit of bottle there when
challenged and she wasn’t screwed down for
that or anything.”
Allez Sur Le Gris’ maiden racing preparation
could continue on into August but Jolly will
resist the temptation to put too much pressure
on the rising three-year-old this campaign.
He said: “She’ll probably run one or two
more times and then we’ll look to the autumn
with her as she’s in at the wrong time (to be still
going in) the spring.”
Jolly, meanwhile, will give Streetcar
Stranger an opportunity at stakes level over a
distance he believes will be more beneficial to
the two-time winner, who led at Murray Bridge
on July 4 when overrun by stablemate Calypso
Reign.
| 2 |
“He led the other day and he was just a
bit aggressive, so I don’t think that suited him,” the trainer said of Streetcar
Stranger.
“Dropping him back in distance (from 1200 metres) will help and he
had a jump out at Gawler on Monday where he went quite well.”
Paul Gatt will retain the ride on Streetcar Stranger. As for Calypso
Reign, who finished eighth in a three-year-old handicap at Flemington
last Saturday, he will take his place in the TAB Handicap (1200m) if he
runs at all.
“I wouldn’t say he didn’t handle the Flemington straight, but he was
probably looking for a corner. He didn’t have a hard run, so if he does
start, he will run in the SABOIS
1200-metre race to have one last
crack at that scheme,” Jolly said.
One potential rival to Jolly’s
Lightning Stakes candidates
is the Will Clarken-trained
unraced two-year-old The
Multiplier (The Factor) who won
a Balaklava barrier trial on July
14.
For the past two years, the
Goolwa-based Jolly has linked
with Clarken, a rising star of the Adelaide training ranks, as his bloodstock
adviser and one of the first horses the pair purchased was The Multiplier, a
$25,000 2019 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale graduate.
“It’s something that’s been quite successful so far. We started at last year’s
Adelaide sales and there’s been a couple of results out of that,” Jolly said.
“We’ve been a bit more proactive with it at this year’s sales and we’ve
ended up with a really nice bunch of rising two-year-olds and we’ve also
been successful with a couple of tried mares including Bella Vella who
went on and won the Group 1 (Robert Sangster).”
The blossoming relationship was solidified when the Clarken-trained
Bella Vella (Commands), a $22,500 Inglis Digital Online Auction purchase
in April last year, won May’s Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at
Morphettville and is considered some chance of securing a slot in this
year’s $15 million The Everest (1200m).
“I’ve got a bloodstock background and I like going to the sales and
we’re like-minded in that department (in what we look for), so I am giving
Will a hand in selecting horses,” he said.
“When you’re training you don’t have a lot of time to be going through
the catalogues, looking at the pedigrees and doing all the research, but
from where I’m based (at Goolwa) it’s a bit more relaxed and I have a
smaller stable, so it allows me to do that work and it’s been going well so
far.”

Three for KermadecDarley stallion Kermadec (Teofilo) produced
his third individual winner yesterday when
Dewhurst (2 c ex Majestic Faith by Denman)
scored on debut in a 1200-metre maiden
on Pakenham’s synthetic track. Trained by
Archie Alexander, Dewhurst was sent out the
$4.40 second favourite and jumped straight
to the lead under Dwayne Dunn. Rated
beautifully on the speed, Dewhurst held off
favourite Journey Of Song (Sebring) by a neck
with Not Available (Turffontein) a length and
a half away in third. Purchased for $125,000
by Bennett Racing and Alexander Racing
at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast
Yearling Sale, Dewhurst’s dam Majestic Faith
(Denman) is a three-quarter sister to Listed
winner Black Minx (Lonhro), the dam of two-
time stakes victor So Si Bon (So You Think).
Rheinwood Pastoral will offer his weanling
half-sister by Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock)
as Lot 860 at next week’s Magic Millions
National Sale. Kermadec will stand for
$13,750 (inc GST) at Darley’s Kelvinside
property in 2020.
Special Reward late nommed for July SprintA Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) tilt
may have fallen by the wayside for dual
Group 3 winner Special Reward (Demerit)
but trainer Kris Lees believes that the best
is yet to come for the rising five-year-old
ahead of his possible return in Saturday’s July
Sprint (1100m) at Rosehill. Special Reward
heads the weights for the handicap with
62 kilograms and Lees said he will accept
with the former Perth galloper today before
deciding whether he lines up this weekend.
"He seems to have come back well," Lees
said. "We backed off him thinking he could
possibly be a Stradbroke-type of horse and
then when they were called off we put him
back in the paddock and then it came back
on. It all became a bit too late for him but it
might be the making of him. It was the longest
break he's had for a while and he seems to
have matured into a pretty nice horse."
Noble Boy on target for Winter Challenge
Last-start Winter Stakes (Listed, 1400m)
winner Noble Boy (Bon Hoffa) is pleasing
trainer Clare Cunningham as he prepares for
another Rosehill stakes race this weekend.
Noble Boy will tackle the Winter Challenge
(Listed, 1500m), in which he will carry 56
kilograms, with five horses who finished
behind him last time out also nominated.
"You couldn't have asked for him to pull
up any better, really," Cunningham said.
"Like most good horses, they have a great
constitution. We've got a few more days to
get through before Saturday but I'm really
happy. Hopefully we draw a nice enough
barrier to get in front of a couple in the run
and he should run another good race. If they
all accept then he probably will be in slightly
better company than last start, so that will be
another step up for him."
She Shao Fly given Bletchingly hopeShe Shao Fly (Epaulette) will aim to become just
the second filly to win the Bletchingly Stakes (Gr
3, 1200m) since the turn of the century when
she lines up at Caulfield on Saturday. The Kevin
Corstens-trained She Shao Fly will be aiming to
join Thiamandi (Street Boss) as a three-year-old
filly to take out the Bletchingly. Corstens told
Racing.com: "I watched her come off the beach
on Friday morning and she was just absolutely
on her toes and straight away the Bletchingly
came into my head and I thought, 'Why not
have a crack? If she happens to perform and run
in the first three, we know we've got a really nice
mare for the spring." She Shao Fly has only had
one run for Corstens, winning a Benchmark 70
handicap at Sandown Lakeside on July 8.
Webb keeping optionsopen with Miss IanoTrainer Mark Webb has nominated Miss
Iano (Equiano) for three races at Caulfield on
Saturday, including the Bletchingly Stakes (Gr
3, 1200m), but he is leaning instead towards
running her in an 1100-metre mares’ race that
she won last year. "The Bletchingly could drop
away a bit, but you are still racing against horses
with pretty high ratings,” Webb said. "She's
probably not quite up to competing against
those high-grade horses, but we will monitor
it on Wednesday morning. If anything I'm
leaning towards the mares' race but she is up in
the weights a bit.” The rising seven-year-old is
also nominated for an open handicap over 1400
metres.

Sherry chasing metro breakthroughApprentice Tom Sherry is looking to bounce
back after his unlucky defeat on Black
Magnum (Magnus) last weekend when he
rides again in the city today. Sherry will
partner Somnus (Savabeel) for his boss Mark
Newnham at Canterbury, with the last-start
four-length winner at Newcastle an odds-on
favourite last night. However, Sherry admits
that the Black Magnum defeat took its toll.
“Mark sat me down and said ‘it’s going to get
tougher mentally, you’ve had a good season
and expectation is going to be higher’,’’ Sherry
told Racing NSW. “It was really tough on me
because it was the plan months ago and the
boss said ride the rail and ride him for luck.
And the luck never came, it was unfortunate
because I think he should have won and
could have won. There’s always the next day
but it took me a day to get over it.’’
Winning Shot holdsedge for KendrickStuart Kendrick is set to send out six runners at
Eagle Farm today, with a three-strong presence
in the final event over 1200 metres. Lips ‘N
Hips (Magnus) is accepted but may not run,
instead heading to Ipswich on Friday. For the
Sunshine Coast handler, he gives Winning Shot
(Shooting To Win) the nod over Copywriter
(Written Tycoon). “Doomben is not Winning
Shot’s favourite track but she’s been racing well
on her home track and she prefers bigger tracks
like Eagle Farm,” Kendrick said. “Copywriter is
going well but she’s in the twilight of her career
as she turns six soon. She’s been consistent
right throughout her career and has won a few
in town. On their current form I have a slight
preference for Winning Shot as her last run
was in metropolitan grade and she’s coming off
strong form.”
Hickmott to tap back into Macedon Trainer Robert Hickmott hopes that he
can replicate his successful Melbourne
Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) formula with German
imports Schabau (Pastorius) and Django
Freeman (Campanologist) by utilising the
Macedon Lodge property owned by his
former boss Lloyd Williams this spring.
Hickmott prepared Green Moon (Montjeu)
and Almandin (Monsun) to win the Cup for
Williams out of Macedon Lodge, with the
estate also being used to prepare Ethereal
(Rhythm), Efficient (Zabeel) and Fiorente
(Monsun) for Cup success. "I'd absolutely
love it if Lloyd will permit it," Hickmott told
Racing.com. "I just asked if we could give the
horses a sabbatical up there to get them out of
their Caulfield routine and just do something
different leading into their spring campaigns.
We thought it would be only a three-week
thing. I told Lloyd he (Schabau) will be
running first-up at The Valley on August 22
and he said we could train him up there until
then and we much appreciate it on my behalf
and the owner's behalf."
Jockeys happy to wear masksSenior riders are happy to wear face masks
before and after races, but they are lukewarm
on them being used during races. Jockey
Dwayne Dunn told Racing.com that he was
worried that safety would be an issue if they
were worn mid-race. "If we have to do it to
keep going then that's what we have to do,"
Dunn said. "If we have to wear them during
a race then I hope we see a different type to
the surgical masks, I can't see them staying
on during a race. We also need to ensure that
our safety isn't compromised out there due
to masks, we need to be able to talk clearly."
Jamie Kah added: "We need to hear each other
and then even if dirt gets stuck in the mask we
have to breathe that in for the entire run, so if
they are going to bring it in hopefully it's just
to the barriers and after the race.”
Equine welfare group calls for submissionsSubmissions for the Thoroughbred Aftercare
Welfare Working Group (TAWWG) will

production, thoroughbred traceability,
sponsored programs for retired racehorses,
regulation, humane horse processing facilities,
and research and development. To make a

RQ launches Coral Coast race seriesFour of Queensland’s biggest regional cities will
go head-to-head in the Coral Coast Shield, a
new initiative launched by Racing Queensland
yesterday. The series, which boasts prize-
money of almost $500,000 across October
and November, will feature 12 heats across
Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns,
with horses trained in each centre earning
points for their city. A final will then be held at
Townsville, with double points on offer. “The
Coral Coast Shield is a fantastic addition to our
racing calendar,” Queensland racing minister
Stirling Hinchliffe said. “It will bring a different
dimension to racing with this new and exciting
format. In years gone by, we have seen the way
in which the North Queensland Games has
been fiercely contested and we look forward to
the Coral Coast Shield stoking the same fires of
competition amongst four proud cities.”

Vale Rob Gaylard
Racing personality and sports broadcaster
Rob Gaylard died suddenly yesterday, aged 70.
Gaylard held a number of roles in the industry,
including training young riders in media and
communications through Racing Victoria’s
apprentice program, acting as the on-course
MC at Flemington and taking on star sprinter
Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago), along with
his daughter Casey Bruce, in order to prepare
the grey for an equestrian career. “Rob loved
horses, be it racehorses or show horses, and
the industry has benefited from his knowledge
and passion for both, particularly in his role as
an equestrian commentator where he has told
the story and championed the deeds of Off the
Track racehorses," Racing Victoria chief Giles
Thompson said. “Rob was a highly respected
member of both the Victorian racing and
equestrian communities and his passing today
will shock and sadden. He was indeed a friendly
and welcoming face trackside to all who knew
him, and his professionalism as an MC shone
through at all times.” Gaylard is survived by his
wife Karen and his daughter Casey.
Vale Peter IlsleyGroup 1-winning trainer Peter Ilsley died
last week after a battle with illness, aged 85.
The Seymour-based Ilsley took Bar Landy
(Aurilandy) to Perth in 1990, taking out the
Winfield Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) - now the
Kingston Town Classic - defeating the likes of
Vo Rogue (Ivor Prince), Marwong (Whiskey
Road) and Eastern Classic (Balmerino). Bar
Landy was owned by Pat McEvoy and his wife
Joy. "From 1976 on, he trained over 80 winners
for us," Pat McEvoy told Racing.com. "Bar
Landy was the best of them, he won the Group
1 in Perth, an Alister Clark and the Tassie Derby,
Lady Shibboleth won a lot of races for us, but
there were plenty of other ones that ran around
the bush too."
NEW ZEALAND
Coleman forced into retirementMichael Coleman has called time on his riding
career following the serious injuries he suffered
at the Rotorua trials on June 30. Coleman, one of
New Zealand's leading jockeys for many years,
suffered a broken femur and serious pelvic
injuries when the horse he was riding to the
start for the 18th heat reared up and went over
backwards when leaving the birdcage. "I had a
few aches and pains leading up to this and this
was just the shove I needed to say it was over,"
Coleman said. "I've had a good career and have
got nothing else to prove. I'm 51 now and by the
time I complete the rehabilitation properly I'll
be 52.” He added: "I've got my daughter, Greer,
staying here so she keeps an eye on me. I'm not
due back to the surgeon until August so I'm just
sitting around home resting. I don't know what
the future holds, but it won't be riding."
Megeve expected to be in the moneyLightly raced filly Megeve (Wandjina) will return
to the scene of her maiden victory when she
resumes at Avondale today in the AJC Members
(1100m). The Sir Peter Vela-owned filly won on
debut over 1200 metres at Avondale last October
before placing at Tauranga a month later. Her
connections have taken a patient approach with
her and it looks to be paying off with the way she
impressed in her 800m trial at Te Aroha earlier
this month. She finished runner-up behind
handy mare Red Chois (Choisir) and beat home
stakes performers Woodcote Lass (Showcasing)
and Karalino (Zacinto). “She trialled up all right
the other day,” trainer Peter Williams said. “The
winner is not a bad horse and the others have
got good form, it was a good trial. We took a bit of
confidence out of the run.”
Agent Perry brings daughter on boardBecca Perry, the daughter of respected New
Zealand agent Bruce Perry, will join her father
in the family bloodstock business. Since leaving
school Becca has completed a Bachelor’s degree
and spent time living and travelling around the
US. Upon her return to New Zealand, she joined
the travel industry in Wellington. Perry said it
was always her plan to become more involved
in her family’s business and with the impact
Covid-19 is having on the travel sector she
thought it was an ideal time to make the move.
“Bringing Becca on board will definitely be a
huge advantage for the company,” Bruce Perry
said. “With so much uncertainty surrounding
auctions you would expect more breeders to
retain quality yearlings and take them through
to the racing stage to target the strong tried
horse market. This is certainly one area that we
will look to develop and involve her in.” Becca
will also assist Trelawney Stud principal Cherry
Taylor in her insurance business.

Good Question has all the answersGood Question (Manduro) collected a second
stakes level victory in France yesterday
when landing a tightly contested Prix Hubert
Baguenault de Puchesse (Listed, 2400m),
defeating Ateem (Dark Angel) by just a neck,
with Sublimis (Shamardal) the same distance
away in third, while hot favourite Royal Julius
(Royal Applause) could only finish fifth, a length
away from the winner. Manduro (Monsun)
sadly suffered a fatal heart attack last month at
his resident stud, Haras du Logis, in France. He
is the sire of 35 stakes winners to date and stood
at €7,000 in 2020.
Into Mischief correctionIt was incorrectly reported in ANZ Bloodstock
News earlier this week that Into Mischief
(Harlan’s Holiday), who sired his seventh
individual Grade 1 winner when Authentic
(3 c ex Flawless by Mr Greeley) took out the
Haskell Stakes (Gr 1, 9f ) at Monmouth Park
on Saturday, had shuttled to Australia for
four seasons. That is incorrect. He remained
at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky but he did
cover 24 mares to southern hemisphere time
between 2014 and 2018. ANZ Bloodstock

There may be little to be gained from
raining on the mooted Victoria
Derby parades of recent Flemington
winners Alcyone (Teofilo) and
Cherry Tortoni (Night Of Thunder).
In fact a multi-egg omelette on face is the
more likely outcome as nobody will remember
this cautionary tale if it proves accurate - it
will only be recalled if one of the two horses
happens to win the Classic.
The James Cummings-trained Alcyone, of
course, won last Saturday’s 1800-metre Byerley
Handicap - a race instituted four years ago as
something of a classic stepping stone to the first
Derby of the following season.
It was done so with noble intention, and
ought to be persevered with in some guise,
but alas - to date - it hasn’t worked out as the
architects may have hoped.
Last year’s Byerley winner Huntly Castle
(Sebring) was beaten almost 20 lengths in the
Derby and hasn’t won a race since. The runner-
up was the filly Marndarra (Foxwedge) who has
also failed to win a race since.
It’s a recurring theme. The 2018 Byerley
went to Visao (High Chaparral), who was eighth
in the Derby; he has not won again and has since
been banished to Darwin and Port Augusta. The
runner-up Nero Chin Chin (Pierro) is winless
since - actually, he is still a maiden - and is now
going around at Carnarvon.
The inaugural Byerley winner was Anchor
Bid (High Chaparral), who did have the
distinction of beating the subsequent Oaks
winner Pinot (Pierro) at her next start but,
in a curtailed career, did not progress to any
major race success before being retired to the
breeding barn.
Thus, while Alcyone and this year’s Byerley
placegetters Johnny Get Angry (Tavistock) and
Surprise Prey (Crackerjack King) look talented
and progressive - as indeed is Cherry Tortoni,
who beat Alcyone and Johnny Get Angry on
July 4 - talk of the Derby is certainly premature.
In fact, short of having some inside
knowledge, you’d have to be a veritable genius
to pick the Victoria Derby winner in July. There
is a reason bookmakers are happy to offer
futures betting. I well remember the fellow who
used to offer 4/1 against picking a Melbourne
Cup runner, just a runner, when the weights
were released and he cleaned up year after year.
There is no guide when looking at the
record of recent Derby winners as they stood in
July of their juvenile season. Last year’s winner
Warning (Declaration Of War) was a two-start
maiden in July. Extra Brut (Domesday) hadn’t
raced. Ace High (High Chaparral) had won a
Kembla Grange maiden. Tarzino (Tavistock)
had raced once, finishing third in a Pakenham
synthetic maiden. Preferment (Zabeel) was
a two-start maiden. Fiveandahalfstar (Hotel
Grand) was an eight-start maiden and Sangster
(Savabeel) had won a maiden at Hawera.

No middle distance candidates for Horse Of The Year and no visitors welcome
The brilliant Nature Strip (Nicconi) should
be crowned Horse of the Year.
Never thought I’d say that about a horse
whom I struggled to warm to for quite some
time. But his three Group 1 wins including the
major sprints of the spring and the autumn
should be enough in a racing year devoid of a
stand-out middle distance competitor.
Overseas-trained horses took most of the
spoils, and the money, in that category with five
Group 1 wins going to Addeybb (Pivotal), Lys
Gracieux (Heart’s Cry), Magic Wand (Galileo),
Mer Der Glace (Rulership) plus another to first
time out import Cape Of Good Hope (Galileo).
Still the irksome talk of frantic endeavours
to have overseas-trained horses competing this
spring continues.
Surely this is offensive to local participants
enduring tough times, in many senses, and who
have complied so well with protocols to sustain
our racing through the Covid-19 crisis.
Racing Australia chairman Greg Nichols
surprisingly joined the chorus last week - saying
he was 'confident' of achieving a 'positive
outcome' that will see internationally trained
horses compete at this year's Spring Carnival.
“We are very keen to have international
participation with the obvious reason that
it makes our carnival even greater than it
currently is,” Nichols said.
What is that obvious reason? I don’t see it.
Unless the world changes very dramatically in
the next couple of months, any overseas horses
won’t be accompanied by 10,000 free spending
tourists.
I’ve asked Racing Victoria if there is a net
economic benefit to having a huge number
of overseas trainees but have not had a
response.
What is not to look forward to in a 2020
spring with Colette, Russian Camelot, Master
Of Wine, Arcadia Queen, Regal Power, Funstar,
Probabeel, Alligator Blood, Melody Belle,
Brandenburg, Nature Strip, Rubisaki, Surprise
Baby, Vow And Declare, Mystic Journey, Quick
Thinker, Zebrowski, Schabau, Django Freeman,
Verry Elleegant and Dawn Passage? Not to
mention the rising three-year-olds headed by
King’s Legacy, Farnan and Rothfire.
What’s not to look forward to about the
opportunity for a bush trainer to get a runner
in the Melbourne Cup or have Jungle Edge run
in the Everest?
This is not an attack on Mr Nichols. He’s
just the last in a long line of officials and media
commentators to make similar observations
which are, at the very least, untimely.
This year is the year to dare to be different.
If the fear is that the top class horses will
now be split too much between Melbourne
and a more aggressive Sydney then perhaps
energies would be better devoted to some
peace-making and a more coordinated spring
program.
No action yet on careless riding front in UK and Ireland
The British Horseracing Authority
(BHA) and Irish Horseracing Regulatory
Board (IHRB) have apparently yet to
respond in any meaningful way to racing
writer Kevin Blake's excellent attheraces.
com article which highlighted the failure
of the stewarding of interference rules in
Britain and Ireland.
The story was accompanied by a damning
video of race falls in England and Ireland which
resulted in ridiculously lenient bans for the
offending jockeys. It featured incidents which
would have resulted in Australian jockeys likely
incurring four to six-week bans and/or hefty
fines.
It not only drew widespread attention to
this important issue but prompted many to
consider other aspects of racing which lag
behind in those jurisdictions compared to
Australia and Hong Kong.
While the charm of English and Irish
racing, nor the standard of horses and
horsemanship, has not diminished, there
remain several issues which demand
attention rather than lip service. What seems
to be an overwhelming attitude of "oh, never
mind" has to change.
First and foremost is prize-money. OK, I do
not have the silver bullet.
Support of world tote pools, which is
gaining impetus in Ireland as well as England,
is certainly a step in the right direction. The
tote is key to the world’s most successful racing
jurisdictions and the world pool push might
need to be accompanied by educating the
old school punters and soliciting politicians
to counter the century-old power of the
bookmaking lobby.
I do not claim to know all the nuances of
the political and betting environments in the
UK and Ireland but this is one domain (prize-
money) which appears to have had little more
than lip service historically. I look at the prize-
money won, by better than average horses
there, and think, “How on earth could anybody
contemplate ownership?”
I'm taken, now, with a horse called Art
Power. He's won four of his five starts. He

won at Royal Ascot, then won a Group 3 at the
Curragh and has now "amassed" - goodness me
- around AUD$110,000.
You can claim about that, with an industry
and government backed bonus, if you win the
opening race of the new season at Moonee
Valley on August 1 - and that's a modest three-
year-olds only race at 1000 metres.
Moving on. Sectional times. I keep reading
that I can get them at many English venues now
… but generally not on my Google searches.
Likewise for Ireland.
Races rarely jump on time. No excuse for
that. It's simply unprofessional.
It is also unprofessional that trainers are
not compelled to advise of any significant
tactics changes, which is now commonplace
in Australia, and while I'm not necessarily
opposed to the use of pacemakers it is
patently absurd, in this era of transparency,
that punters are left to guess which one of a
stable's three, four or five runners might be
that pacemaker.
Having the vision of every race, from every
track, on the one site would also be a godsend
and potentially a turnover driver - but I'll
concede that's a problem which isn't unique to
the UK and Ireland.
