He has brought this technology to 6+ countries in Af-rica By 2014 he lit up the homes of over a million people across Africa After a great career of selling 40 million CDs, and 5 Grammy Nominations and countless Billboard hits Akon is changing it up a bit He has projects with Slim Shady (Eminem) Lady Gaga and even Canadian rapper Kardinal Offishall Akon has also collaborated with some new styles of music and re-leased some new tracks with more R&B and "world-music" roots Akon will be playing in Dianna Krall Plaza downtown Nanaimo September 18 with Karl Wolf opening This show is ALL AGES and the only show left on Vancouver Island to see this artist (Vic-toria is SOLD OUT) Tickets are available at ticketzone com at the Queens or in Duncan at James Street Billiards

  • Virtually every adult Canadian is in debt. That is not necessarily a bad thing. We have debt for mortgages, cars, student loans, etc. We would not have our house without the mortgage, the car without the loan or the education without the student loan It could be argued that there is a benefit attached to the debt These are the fixed costs we budget for, among others Now, add to this debt: a line of credit and perhaps a couple of credit cards (they average four per adult Canadian) This is still not necessarily bad A line of credit may be used for a home renovation, increasing the value of the house Credit cards are convenient and as long as we pay them off each month, are not an issue Debt, but not crisis. Peoples debt can sometimes arise out of unforeseen cir-cumstances An example: the death of a family member in Europe and you and your spouse must fly there, stay in a hotel, incur travelling expenses and perhaps even pay for part of the funeral You use the line of credit or credit cards for these expenses with every intention of bud-geting tightly and paying off the debt You roll up your sleeves, work hard and drastically modify your spending habits until the debt is retired As long as you have your jobs and your health, this plan will work over time Still not crisis. Now, complicate the above scenario with one of you losing your job The carefully balanced budget is now deeply in the red Bills arrive and there are no funds with which to pay You use your line of credit to pay them You believe you are using this credit very temporarily until you find another job You are now tipping towards Finan-cial Crisis Each month the bills are paid using credit until your line of credit is maxed and you are loading up on the credit cards The stress is almost unbearable You cannot sleep Your debt is now affecting your health You are now in Financial CrisisYou have not wanted to face this ugly reality but you must now assess your options You look at selling your house but find, with the drop in values over the past years, there is not enough equity to even cover pay-

ing off the mortgage, net of real estate fees Likewise, not enough equity to qualify for a second mortgage or consolidation loan You consider, and quickly dismiss, borrowing from family or friends You wonder about Bankruptcy and if you will lose your house and posses-sions I have had clients that tell me that they actually considered suicide (Two of whom actually attempted prior to meeting me) It is time to book a free consulta-tion with a professional debt consultant A debt consultant will review every option that is available, given your specific set of circumstances Chris Grew is a Debt Relief Specialist assisting cli-ents from Ladysmith to Victoria restructure and eliminate their debt. www.chrisgrew.ca

  • An old man is met by his attorney, and is told he is

going to be audited He rides to the IRS office with his attorney He begins to talk with the IRS agent I bet $2,000 I can bite my own eye! The IRS agent agrees to the bet The old man laughs, pulls out his glass eye, and bites it The old man bets $3,000 he can bite his other eye The IRS agent knows theres no way possible to do this, so he once more agrees The old man cackles, pulls out his dentures, and bites his eye Then the old man finally wagers, I bet $20,000 I can stand on the far side of your desk, spit over the desk, and get it into your wastebasket, without missing a single drop The agent knows he wont be able to, so once more he agrees The old man indeed misses, spitting all over the desk, and on the paperwork The IRS agent jumps for joy, but then notices the old mans attorney over in the corner moaning Are you all right? asks the agent No! On the way over here, he bet me $400,000 he could spit on your desk and youd be happy about it!

  • Everyone had a dream as a kid right? Im pretty sure I wanted to be a policeman, astronaut, fireman, baker (so I could eat donuts all day of course), and on and on Its good to have dreams Life, however, tends to intervene on our childhood visions for our futures Its just what happens no matter who you are Look at the English Prince for example the older oneWilliam What were his dreams I won-der Probably he dreamt something like I wish I could just go camping in a tent in the woods alone or perhaps with one other personno paparazzi, no prying eyes or shutter snaps But no theres no camping when youre a prince! Cmon! Then of course it was off to prep school, brief stint in the non-active-duty military, college, polo, marriage kids and all the while having every stage of his life

on the covers of every magazine and tabloid paper in the world at large So has he given up on his dreams? I doubt it I hope not anyway Its what keeps us go-ing; pushes us forward Im not going to talk about my dreams but I can say I do have them If I close my eyes there they are Sure theyve changed over the years somewhat but then so too have I In my world I encounter many people, some very famous and successful and others on their way, doggedly pursuing their dreams without fear, without hesita-tion You can see it in their face; hear it in their voice, the determination and the hope Sure theres fear and doubt there also but it never holds dominion over the underlying passion and the striving Simon says: if you believe your dreams you will achieve them Never give up and never stop dreaming

  • As a sensitive and emotional person, I often felt different from others throughout my life I felt my emotions on a very deep level, processed my thoughts on a very deep level and experienced the world on a very deep level a world I sometimes felt too much for At a time when I did not understand my nature, I resisted and repressed my sensitive, intuitive and emotional self Eventually, I was like a lion in a cage and struggled with anxiety, anger, fear, self-doubt and fatigue I felt as if something was wrong with me At times I still experience struggles, as every person does, but to a much lesser degree, as my perspective and understanding has evolved I have learned to honour and embrace every piece, every part and every side of who I am I no longer judge certain emotions as good or bad I believe ev-ery one of our emotions and states, including an-ger, anxiety and sadness, are valuable They serve as our greatest guide if we welcome them When

we do, they are given an outlet; our inner self is given an outlet When we allow ourselves to feel what wants to come up without judgment, we grow and transform and our gifts are revealed I believe that we are not in need of fixing, as the world would often rather teach Instead, we are in need of feeling This is my own personal belief and the foundation of the Sensitive Soul event, Sensitivity, Emotions & Complex Me, a speaker series designed with the sensitive soul in mind With a dream and a deep inner calling, I set out to design and produce the very event that I would have loved to have attended throughout my life Tickets are expected to sell out fast Event details, guest speaker bios and tickets available at: www SensitiveSoul com You can also follow Sensitive Soul on social media at: Facebook com/Sensitive-Soul and Twitter @MySensitiveSoul I personally hope to see you in Victoria on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at the Victoria Conference Centre.

  • HOME&LIFEyou sit and watch some show you probably don't even like that much but it's just on and there you are Most TV programming offered today is pretty pathetic and let's face it the 100+ channel universe requires work to navigate Sometimes is just wears you down and you end up kind of settling for some show you don't even know the name of With my last TV provider I was totally lost I had a group of chan-nels in the 100's, 300's, 800's and then there were the music channels in the 1000's Music channels?! My TV speakers aren't even that good for crying out loud I miss the days when we had a manageable number of channels When I grew up we had like 12 channels Later on the channel universe expanded to around 30 or so Those were good days because, rather than getting lost in a myriad of choices to the point where you can't even make one with the lower number of channels the brain could manage the 30 or so choices in front of it and settle on one program and see it through to the end One thing I learned recently is that we don't really even need a traditional "cable" set-up to get the shows, movies, news, or local programming we want Now I know what you're thinking and yes it's perfectly legal and not one of those deals were you need a "special box" or some code or some-thing There's no point in solving one complex problem by introducing more complexity However I also can't stand having 792 regular channels that I never watch and a bunch more music channels that I never listen to If, like so many others, all you really want is local news and other channels such as CBC, CTV, Global, City etc you can do this without even incurring a monthly bill Once again this is not some 'grey area' which leaves you feeling like a criminal or having to call some shady character when your system goes on the fritz

Do you watch TV the way you used to? No Of course you don't You never used to record your fa-vourite show You never had the unparalleled conve-nience of seeing, displayed across your TV screen, which telemarketer was calling your landline as

792 Channels and a massive bill to match: Are you ready to cut the cord?

One thing I learned recently is that we don't really even need a traditional "cable" set-up to get the shows, movies, news, or local programming we want.

Now I know what you're thinking and yes it's perfectly legal and not one of those deals were you need a "special box" or some code or something.

    HOME&LIFE

When you combine this with Netflix or Apple Movies who needs cable? Here's the best part: the one-time cost to set up a local TV platform plus a movie platform (including the NHL network) is a pittance compared to what you pay for a cable-contract After the set-up cost (assuming you have Netflix) it's just 7 bucks a month plus the cost of any pay-per-use movies which usually run about 5 or 6 bucks per rental (just like the old days at the movie rental store!) If you don't care about movies then the monthly cost is exactly zero-dollars Yup, you heard it right If you want a free information kit

and you live anywhere from Victoria to Campbell River just email: antenna_guy@mail com For me it's been 3 months since I cut the cord (all I pay for is my Internet via my chosen provider which is all totally separate) and I've already saved $360 dol-lars! With all my savings I may just head downtown and pick up a good book Or maybe I'll buy an al-bum for my turn-table and listen to music the way it was originally intended Either way if I choose to watch TV it is nice to know it's there but it's not beckoning me and I sure as heck don't feel obliged to watch it in order to justify the huge cost

  • After being in the business for more than a century, the Cow Ex knows it takes a good mix of old favourites and new experiences to keep the throngs happy. Having a place to park when they get there is also important, the Exhibitions location just minutes north of Duncan on the Trans Canada provides plenty of that. Visitors will, as always, encounter familiar sights and sounds. Walk through any barn any day of the Fair and youll see cattle, sheep, horses, chickens and rabbits, some being readied for the show ring and others, already judged, with prize rosettes hanging over their stalls or cages. In Mellor Hall where winners in divisions as diverse as Needlework, Flowers, Photography and Honey are selected prior to the Exhibitions opening, it wont be unusual to hear people admiring the craftsmanship and variety of those entries. More than one person has been overheard in the past to say they wished they could sample that blue ribbon pie! In the area devoted to entries by Juniors, children can point out to friends the special projects they have created during the summer break from school. Near the Garden Produce tables, family members can challenge one another to guess the weight of a huge pumpkin. How on earth did someone cart such a monster into the Fair?!Back out on the Grounds the whiff of onions for your burger, the mounds of Chinese Food or the sight of buttery cob of corn will pull the crowds into the Food Court. Who can resist such savory choices? The selection is sweeter over at the 4-H ice cream booth. Perched on bleachers overlooking the tractor pull, and

enjoying the last lick and crunch of their cones, fair goers can contemplate their next move. What havent they seen yet?One spot thats impossible to miss is the Midway. Its bright lights and head spinning rides are a magnet to many, especially at night when the electrified colours are brilliant against the darker evening sky and the cool air is an invitation to keep someone special just a little closer. While a lot of things dont change much from one year to the next, what does is whos performing on the Main Stage. Just look at the entertainment lineup for 2015. On Friday night, September 11, the dynamic Me and Mae band performs its spirited style of country music. It only gets better -- the big draw on Saturday, September 12, is the very talented Karen Lee Batten, a three-time recipient of the BCCMA Female Vocalist of the Year award! All of this star-studded music is included in the cost of the daily admission to the fair: adults - $10, seniors - $8, and children (7 to 13) - $6.But why wait til sundown to be entertained? Other events taking place elsewhere on the Grounds include the Laughing Loggers. Their antics with axes and chainsaws are guaranteed to split sides (yours) while theyre splitting wood (theirs). If football is your passion, circle Sunday, September 13, on your calendar. Thats when the Grey Cup comes to the Cowichan Exhibition. For more on whats in store in 2015, go to www.cowex.ca.A final word of advice, with this line up at the Ex come early and stay late!

The Cowichan Exhibition has been drawing folks to its grounds for a long time -- 2015 marks its 147th year! So whats the attraction? What brings 20,000 people of all ages through its gates?

As dads, we need to assure our boys, when they are little and looking to us for support and guidance, that even

though we may get angry and beat our chests from time to time...

Men in our society have to be tough, aggressive, and show no emotion. We are taught these things from an early age. In some tracts of life the message is relentless with any sign of sensitivity taken as a sign of weakness and quickly squelched out.

    Article by Simon Rideout

Dont fear the hoist. Theres a little known phobia which afflicts vast numbers of car-owners Its called simply enough hoistophobia: fear of having ones car on a hoist The root of this fear stems from a feeling of loss of control and is compounded by the transference of this control to the operator of the hoist The fear really has nothing to do with the idea that the car may fall off the hoist which can happen by the way If you dont believe me just go to youtube com and type in car falls off hoist In any case the only real cure for this most poorly understood but very common phobia is pretty simple: get to know your mechanic This is not always possible of course especially if your mechanic is sitting atop a large Clydesdale wearing a top hat while smoking a 100s menthol cigarette and looking down on you through his monocle carelessly blowing that sickly sweet smoke in your face This image is not the image you

want to have of a mechanic you trust and if you have a mechanic like this its no wonder you have hoistophobia and you would be forgiven if you had a host of other phobias not to mention an over-active imagination I digresswhich is, truly, not hard to do when writing about questionable phobias To know and trust your automobile mechanic is the first step to being able to hand over your keys and remain at peace Once youve achieved this you can relax as your beloved vehicle is slowly raised 7 feet off the ground to be carefully inspected by those who are honestly driven
