Australian Bloodstock director and noted form analyst Luke Murrell is convinced Red Cardinal (Montjeu), an Andreas Wohler-trained

European import so far unsighted in Australia, is the best horse in today’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m).

A son of Montjeu (Sadler’s Wells), Red Cardinal ($17) is one of two horses in the race for Australian Bloodstock, with the Darren Weir-

trained European import Big Duke (Raven’s Pass) ($21) also representing the syndicator in the $6,000,000 race.

Red Cardinal won the Belmont Gold Cup Invitational Stakes (Gr 3, 16f) in June, a race in which Melbourne Cup rival Wall Of Fire (Canford Cliffs) ($13) finished eighth, before being beaten by Marmelo (Duke Of Marmalade) last start in the Prix Kergorlay (Gr 2, 3000m) at Deauville on 20 August.

The Hughie Morrison-trained Marmelo, who will be ridden by Hugh Bowman from barrier 16 in the Melbourne Cup, has since ran an eye-catching sixth in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) on 21 October.

Murrell told ANZ Bloodstock News that Red Cardinal was suffering from a skin complaint before the Prix Kergorlay and was a doubtful starter for the Group Two race, but if it was not for the setback he believes the gelding would have won.

“Without being disrespectful to Marmelo, if our bloke was fit and healthy on the day we would have won and won easily I think … but all the infections he had from all the bugs and bites that he had knocked him around,” Murrell said.

“They call them Midges bites and he had a bad reaction to them, so just about every square centimetre of his body he had a welt or a sore on it.

“Andreas was amazed they let him run, but from a conditioning point of view and what we had planned for him, we were very pleased that he

could run because it put the miles in his legs which was the main exercise of running in that race.”

Wohler, who trained Protectionist (Monsun) for Australian Bloodstock to win the 2014 Melbourne Cup, elected to bypass the Caulfield carnival with Red Cardinal due to firm tracks.

Murrell is mindful of history showing that an international horse is yet to win the Melbourne Cup at their first run in Australia, but said it was a deliberate plan to suit Red Cardinal.

“If they continue to put up those tracks at Caulfield that are rock hard it makes no sense to bring him here just to break him down in a lead up race,” said Murrell, who operates Australian Bloodstock with Jamie Lovett.

“We were worried the horse possibly would be severely affected (by the firm track) because he has been set for the Melbourne Cup for 18 months.

“Being a Montjeu and a clean-winded horse we were more than happy to do a bit of extra work at home.”

Murrell said when Red Cardinal’s former stablemate Protectionist won the Melbourne Cup three years ago, connections were supremely confident of victory, but admits this year’s race is more open.

“Andreas is exceptionally happy with the horse and can’t believe how good his fitness is, but Protectionist was a world-class horse in any jurisdiction, so our confidence levels on that occasion were through the roof, but they are not at that level this time,” he said.

“At the same time we still feel Red Cardinal is possibly the best horse

in the race. If he drew a barrier we would have been supremely confident he could run top three but we will see what the conditions throw up.

“That is the other thing, is the fence going to be biased to the on-pacers because the track is so firm. Ideally, we would love a bit of rain for both our runners because I think it would help them massively.”

As for race tactics, Murrell said at this stage jockey Kerrin McEvoy would not be locked into any set plan from the outside barrier (23).

“We have got plan A, B and C and not lock into anything until we see how the track is playing because with these firm tracks it doesn’t really matter what horse you have got, the frontrunners are not coming back to them because it is so firm,” he said.

“If it stays like that we might have to be a bit more positive, but if we got a bit of rain we can try another option.”

Murrell is also delighted with the fact another European import managed by Australian Bloodstock, Big Duke, has made the Melbourne Cup field.

Australian Bloodstock purchased Big Duke after just four starts in the UK for a Rating 85 (1m 2f) win at Wetherby.

Since joining Weir’s stable last year, Big Duke has won six races with another four placings including victories in the Launceston Cup (Gr 3, 2400m), the NE Manion Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) and the Chairman’s Handicap (Gr 2, 2600m).

This spring he has been runner-up in The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m), won the $500,000 St Leger (2600m) and was held up for a run when fourth in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2500m) on 28 October.

Brenton Avdulla, who has ridden Big Duke at his past three starts, will again take the ride on the six-year-old from barrier five.

“He never got out of second gear (in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup) and was beaten a couple of lengths by two horses (Who Shot Thebarman and Libran) who had momentum,” Murrell said.

“For me, I think it was positive. Darren likes his horses to have hard runs before the grand final to get them rock hard fit, but taking my owner’s hat off, from a ratings point of view he is by far the best of the local horses.

“If he runs up to the Sydney run (in the ATC St Leger) then I think he can run top three.”

Murrell admits the rapid trajectory of Big Duke, who had his first

VERDICT By fluke or not, no European horse has claimed this without anAustralian prep since Vintage Crop way back in 1993. A few have

gone close but none have won. Thomas Hobson, who is easy to like, has not hadan Australian prep but the draw hasn’t been kind in any case and that may have donefor his chance of winning. US Army Ranger is another without a recent start whohas been posted wide, but he was surely going to be dropped in anyway and has theright rider booked for that tactic. The one with no huge negatives to overcome isMARMELO, so he looks the safest bet. Almandin is a big threat despite hisadvancing years, while Amelie’s Star and Ventura Storm can run a lot betterthan they did last time.[David Toft]

Tuesday 7 November 2017 | 4 |Australian Bloodstock pin Cup hopes on Red Cardinal and Big Duke

Australian start at Bendigo last November, had surprised him and his fellow owners.

“When we bought him we thought we were buying a really handy Group class stayer and I would be lying if I said I thought he’d be a winning chance in a Melbourne Cup 18 months later,” he said.

“One of his biggest assets is that he has the desire and will to try and do well for you and you can see that with their attitude and their head carriage and that sort of thing when buying them.”

Australian Bloodstock was also aiming Japanese import Admire Deus (Admire Don) for this year’s Melbourne Cup before being struck down by a serious injury in the lead up to the Caulfield Cup.

Also trained by Weir, Admire Deus suffered a leg injury in a track gallop at Warrnambool in October, prematurely ending his racing career.

“We were only talking about it this morning. I feel he possibly would have been one of the shortest-priced favourites for the Melbourne Cup in recent history if he stayed sound,” he said.

“I am adamant what he would have done in the Caulfield Cup (won easily) and he would have been even better suited in this race.”

Admire Deus remains under veterinary care and it will be another three to four weeks before they will know whether the Grade Two winner will survive his injury.

Humidor ready for Melbourne Cup challengeTrainer Darren Weir believes the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) second placing by Humidor (Teofilo) was the perfect lead up for today’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) despite doubts about whether the five-year-old can run out a strong 3200 metres. The Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) winner has been beaten three times at 2400 metres and has 56 kilograms in today’s race. “I didn’t really think he would get that close, but he’s such a good horse when he’s ridden the right way and he got a beautiful run in the Cox Plate,” Weir said. “From a Cup point of view it was a terrific run.”

Shinn a chance for second Melbourne CupBlake Shinn’s masterful ride on Humidor in the Cox Plate when getting within a long neck of champion mare Winx (Street Cry) has led to the Sydney-based jockey getting a chance to win his second Melbourne Cup. Shinn will ride Humidor for the second time today, with the Darren Weir-trained horse drawing barrier 13. "His Cox Plate run was amazing," said Shinn, who rode Viewed (Scenic) to win the Melbourne Cup in 2008. "I've got a lot of confidence in the horse after riding him and I think we're a great shot. He tested the great mare in the Cox Plate and it proved that he's one of the best horses in the land. So if he can reproduce that tomorrow and run the distance, he should go close."

Palmer takes on former masters in CupWhile trainer Hugo Palmer will be sending out his first runner in today’s Melbourne Cup there will be some sense of familiarity when he saddles Wall Of Fire (Canford Cliffs) alongside his two former bosses, Gai Waterhouse and Hughie Morrison. Palmer worked for Waterhouse for a year, having been assistant to Morrison for just over three seasons before leaving for Australia.

Morrison will run leading hope Marmelo (Duke Of Marmalade), while Waterhouse and Adrian Bott run Saturday’s Lexus Stakes (registered as Hotham Handicap) (Gr 3, 2500m) winner Cismontane (High Chaparral) in today’s race. "It's quite weird how the world goes, that here we are both in the same race with horses in the same colours too,” said Palmer. "And it's quite fun, we've drawn next to each other as well." Both Wall Of Fire (barrier 15) and Marmelo (16) race in the colours of their part-owner Aziz Kheir.

O’Brien junior excited by Melbourne Cup pairTop jockey turned trainer Joseph O’Brien will be attempting to train the winner of the Melbourne Cup before his father Aidan and the young trainers hopes are pinned on Group Two winner Rekindling (High Chaparral) and last season’s Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) runner-up US Army Ranger (Galileo) in today’s $600,000 handicap. O'Brien senior will be represented by Johannes Vermeer (Galileo) today and the closest he's come to claiming the Cup was in 2007 with three-year-old Mahler (Galileo), who finished third. "It's good to be back here and I'm looking forward to it," Joseph O'Brien said. "To be here is a privilege so to win the race would be unbelievable. I've got two nice horses that I hope to get a good trip around and that's all we can ask for."

Melham confident about Johannes VermeerJockey Ben Melham will be hoping to win the Melbourne Cup for the first time when he partners Caulfield Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) runner-up Johannes Vermeer in today’s race. The Aidan O'Brien-trained entire, who is raced by a group including prominent Australian owner Lloyd William, was a fast-finishing second with Katelyn Mallyon aboard in the Caulfield Stakes was followed up by a luckless third under Melham in the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) a week later. "He probably should have

won the Caulfield Cup," Melham said. "We had a chequered run through them. He didn't have a lot of luck and he still ran very well. Obviously he hasn't been beyond the mile and a half (2400m) but my gut feeling is he'll run the two miles. And I think if he does run the two miles, he'll obviously run very well."

Dee savours first Cup rideJockey Michael Dee will be hoping his excellent Spring Carnival will continue when he partners the Robert Hickmott-trained Gallante (Montjeu), in what will be his first ride in the Melbourne Cup this afternoon. Dee won the The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m) on Foundry (Galileo) on 30 September and then steered Shillelagh (Savabeel) to victory in the Kennedy Mile (registered as Cantala Stakes) (Gr 1, 1600m) on Saturday and is hoping to add a third Group One to his tally today. "I couldn't be happier with the way things are going at the moment and to get two Group Ones within six weeks is pretty unbelievable," Dee said. "My only goals were to pick up light rides in the Group Ones. So to come out with two Group One winners already, I'm kicking goals."

Fitness edge lands Mertens a Cup rideKeeping himself in trim has paid off for Beau Mertens who lines up for his first Melbourne Cup ride on Cismontane. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained stayer gained a start in today’s race when he led throughout to win the Lexus Stakes at Flemington last Saturday. Cismontane was ridden by Stephen Baster, but the gelding's 50 kilograms in the $6,000,000 race is below Baster's minimum weight. "I've kept my weight in order because you never know what can pop up," Mertens said. "My weight's good and I'm feeling well too. He's not the easiest ride so I need to be strong as I've got six other rides on the day as well. I've got to be there feeling well and at the moment I'm feeling well and feeling pretty excited."

Prize money lures Nakeeta’s connectionsThe prize money on offer in the Melbourne Cup lured the connections of Nakeeta (Sixties Icon) to Australia and he will now look to become the first Scottish-trained horse to win the Flemington showpiece today. Trained in Scotland by Iain Jardine, the gelding comes into the race off the back of fine victory in the lucrative Ebor Handicap (1m6f), the same race which was won by the ill-fated Heartbreak City (Lando), before he finished runner-up in last year’s Melbourne Cup. "After he won the Ebor we had a look in the program book and we were really tempted by the prize money and we thought the race would be run to suit us," Jardine said. "So here we are. There was a lot to look into, but we're here and we've been welcomed by all the Aussies and it's great to be part of it all."

Fresh Hartnell ready for third Cup

Trainer James Cummings will look to land the race synonymous with his family when he saddles dual Group One winner Hartnell (Authorized) in today’s Melbourne Cup at Flemington. Grandson of the legendary Bart Cummings, who sent out 12 winners of race, Cummings sprung a surprise when he decided to run Hartnell, in what will be his third attempt at the $6,000,000 race, having finished 15th in 2015 and third, when sent off favourite last year. "He's freshened up and looks like he's responded nicely to a few easy weeks since the Caulfield Stakes," Cummings said. "More importantly he has trained more and more like a two miler and raced like one over the past month and a half. And he arrives for the first time in a Melbourne Cup on fresh legs with a preparation where we're clearly trying something different."

Berry misses FlemingtonHong Kong-based jockey Tommy Berry was forced to forgo his rides on Melbourne Cup day at Flemington owing to the scratching of Who Shot Thebarman (Yamanin Vital) from the feature race. The Chris Waller-trained gelding was found to have an elevated temperature on Sunday, forcing his withdrawal from the Melbourne Cup. The Hong Kong Jockey Club has, therefore, withdrawn permission for Berry to ride at Flemington because he does not have a Group One ride.

Walker to partner LucyinrioNew Zealand trainer Kylie Little has turned for expatriate jockey Michael Walker to ride her consistent six-year-old mare Lucyinrio (Captain Rio) in today’s Hong Kong Jockey Club Plate (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington. The trainer has sent Lucyinrio, runner-up last start in the Spring Sprint (Gr 3, 1400m) at Hastings on 22 October, to Australia for the $200,000 race. “I’ve been really lucky and when I spoke about it with Trent Busuttin he said they didn’t have room for the mare and he put me onto Greg Eurell and she’s staying there,” Little said. “Trent and Natalie Young and Greg have been absolutely wonderful. It’s a great learning experience for me.” More irrigation for FlemingtonTrack manager Mick Goodie was last night applying six millimetres of irrigation to the Flemington surface ahead of today’s Melbourne Cup meeting. The rail remains in the true position, as it was for the Victoria Derby meeting, with 21 millimetres of irrigation applied since Saturday.

Barrier nine for Aloisia in OaksThousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Aloisia (Azamour) will have 11 rivals in Thursday’s $1,000,000 VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) at Flemington. The Aaron Purcell-trained New Zealand-bred filly won the Moonee Valley Vase (Gr 2, 2040m) on 28 October and Luke Nolen will again take the ride on Thursday. Saturday’s Wakeful Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) winner Luvaluva (Mastercraftsman) has drawn barrier ten, while the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Pinot (Pierro) has drawn barrier six.

Ulmann draws barrier five in Group ThreePerth-bound Darren Weir-trained Ulmann (Sebring) and the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Supply And Demand (Sebring) are both set to line up in the TCL TV Stakes (registered as Chatham Stakes) (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington on Thursday. Ulmann, who is entered for the Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and the Kingston Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) at Ascot, won the Moonga Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Caulfield on 21 October. Grafton Cup (Listed, 2350m) winner Supply And Demand, who is also also entered for the Perth Group One races, was runner-up in the Filante Handicap (1400m) first up at Randwick on 28 October. Damian Lane rides Ulmann, while Beau Mertens partners Supply And Demand.

Drop in grade for Ball Of MuscleSmart sprinter Ball Of Muscle (Dubawi), third last start to In Her Time (Time Thief) and Impending (Lonhro) in the Sydney Stakes (registered as City Tatt’s Lightning) (Listed, 1200m), will take his place in the Absolut Stakes (registered as Century Stakes) (Listed, 1000m) at Flemington on Thursday. In Her Time and Impending will run in the Darley Classic (registered as VRC Sprint) (Gr 1, 1200m) on Saturday, while the Joe Pride-trained Ball Of Muscle will run in the $150,000 race. Glyn Schofield will ride the seven-year-old gelding from barrier six. Group One winner The Quarterback (Street Boss) and the James Cummings-trained Badajoz (Commands) are also set to run in the Absolut Stakes.

Sambro could back upCarbine Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) runner-up Sambro (Fastnet Rock) could back up in Thursday’s Seppelt Wines Stakes (registered as Batman Stakes) (Listed, 1800m) at Flemington after trainer Chris Waller accepted for the three-year-old in the $150,000 race. Sambro ran third in the Dulcify Quality (Listed, 1600m) three starts ago and was also placed behind stablemate Kaonic (Savabeel) and subsequent Wakeful Stakes winner Luvaluva at Randwick on 21 October. Hugh Bowman takes the ride on Sambro, who has drawn barrier seven in the field of 15.

Debonairly to resume in Kennedy PlateTalented Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained three-year-old Debonairly (Snitzel) will resume in Thursday’s Kennedy Plate (Gr 3, 1100m) at Flemington. Debonairly won the Woodlands Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Scone last preparation and has tuned up for the $200,000 race with two barrier trial victories at Randwick this campaign. Kerrin McEvoy will ride the filly in the straight course race, which also sees last start William Crockett Stakes (Listed, 1200m) winner Blondie (Reward For Effort), the Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra-trained Smart Coupe (Smart Missile) and the James Cummings-trained Jorda (Exceed And Excel). Click here to view Thursday’s Flemington acceptances.

Hey Doc to miss Darley ClassicLast start Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Hey Doc (Duporth) will miss Saturday’s Darley Classic after suffering an injury at his Flemington stable yesterday. The Tony McEvoy-trained four-year-old, who is a dual Group One winner, was expected to line up in the Group One sprint but was injured when kicked on the horse walker this morning. McEvoy was forced to have stitches applied to Hey Doc’s joint and also treat him with antibiotics, ruling him out of the Darley Classic.

Winning return for well-travelled RaghuFormer New Zealand entire Raghu (Showcasing), who won the Karaka 3YO Mile (RL, 1600m) at Ellerslie when trained by Tony Pike, made a winning return in Australia after a sting in Hong Kong. Now trained at Mornington by Jason Warren, Raghu won the Peninsula Cup (1610m) on his new home track on Sunday. The five-year-old was unsuccessful in five starts in Hong Kong when trained by Caspar Fownes before joining Warren’s stable.

VRC to investigate Melbourne Cup emergenciesVictoria Racing Club chairman Amanda Elliott has put the issue of emergencies for the Melbourne Cup back on the agenda after

the scratching of Who Shot Thebarman. The withdrawal of the Chris Waller-trained nine-year-old has left a field of 23 for the Melbourne Cup. Elliott wants the VRC and its wagering partners to have another attempt to solve the technology issues that prevent having emergencies for the Melbourne Cup. "We're hoping to have emergencies in the Cup next year," Elliott told RSN927. "It's a sort of legacy situation that has been around for a long time. As I understand it years ago it was because the technology couldn't cope with the amount of pre-post betting, and then to have a scratching."

Maloney appeals suspensionVictorian jockey Ryan Maloney has appealed a 12 meeting suspension for careless riding on Eptimum (Snitzel) in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington on Saturday. Racing Victoria stewards handed Maloney the ban for his ride on the Tony Edmonds-trained three-year-old, with the ban due to expire on 17 November. The Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board will hear Maloney’s appeal against the severity of the penalty tomorrow.

Nestor to retireHeavyweight New South Wales country jockey Kody Nestor will retire after today’s non-TAB race meeting at his home town of Dubbo. Nestor, who rode a winner at Mudgee on 28 October, has three rides at today’s Melbourne Cup day race meeting. Injuries and constant battles to control his weight have led to the decision to call time on his career.

Felix seriously injured in fallQueensland jockey Jeff Felix has suffered serious injuries in a fall at a north Queensland race meeting. The 45-year-old was hurt when the horse he was riding fell shortly after the start of a race at Home Hill on Saturday. The Queensland Racing Integrity Commission issued a media release on Sunday night which said Felix was taken to Townsville General Hospital where he remained in intensive care. Felix's injuries include a fractured skull and

collarbone, broken nose, facial lacerations and internal bleeding from a suspected ruptured spleen. Mackay jockey Katariina Aho, 35, also came off her horse in the same incident but appeared to have escaped unhurt.

Veteran Authentic Paddy to defy age in Group ThreeEight-year-old gelding Authentic Paddy (Howbaddouwantit) will look to win his first race since April 2016 when he takes his chance in the OMF Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) at Ellerslie today. Placed five times at Group One level, the Lisa Latta-trained gelding was last seen running sixth in the Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m). “Putting the race back two weeks meant he just came to the end of his run,” Latta said. “He went to the Waverley trials last week as he takes a lot of work. He’s very well and his work has been good.”

Ellerslie test for Wait A SecFacing Authentic Paddy again in today’s OMF Stakes is last month’s surprise Livamol Classic winner Wait A Sec (Postponed), who will be on trial for more Group One goals when he takes his chance in the Group Three. The Guy Lowry and Grant Cullen seven-year-old has been earmarked for a tilt in the Auckland Cup (Gr 1, 3200m). “We’re looking forward to it and giving him a run that way around and then later on, all going well, he’ll head back for the Auckland Cup,” said Lowry. “He’s really been working well and he’s bouncing around.”

Freshen up for Endean RoseEndean Rose (Savabeel) will not run in today’s OMF Stakes at Ellerslie with trainer Iain Kennedy revealing she has had a few issues and was therefore not ready for the race. The seven-year-old mare, who was last seen running third in the Livamol Classic, will likely have her next start in the Cal Isuzu Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Te Rapa on 16 December, before an intended tilt in the Zabeel Classic (Gr 1, 2000m) on Boxing Day. “She’s just had a few little issues and she’s not quite ready,” Kennedy said. “I’ll freshen her up and go to the Cal Isuzu Stakes and then the Zabeel.”

Scott Base making progressCo-trainers Johno Benner and Hollie Wynyard are expecting a big show from Scott Base (Dalghar) in Saturday’s New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) after being impressed with gelding’s last start second in the Canterbury Stakes (Listed, 1600m). “He has always appealed as a real stayer and that last run was very pleasing as he ran through the line very strongly,” Benner said. “It was just what we wanted to see leading into the Guineas and his work since then has been very good. Saturday will be his fourth start in this campaign, so he is on the way up and goes into the race at peak condition.”

Udyta Clarke and the charm of Derby Day

The Group Two TAB Multiplier Stakes over 1200m at Flemington on Derby Day has played host to many a star during its long and rich history.

Since first being run in 1868 as the Flying Stakes (becoming the Linlithgow in 1908), the likes of Fastnet Rock, Choisir, Mahogany, Placid Ark, Campaign King, Scamanda, Vain, Wenona

Girl, Sky High, Ajax, Chatham and Amounis have all saluted. Geez, even Carbine and Phar Lap are on the honour roll.

Now, while it’s probably a safe bet to suggest that 2017 winner, Rich Charm, won’t be uttered in the same breath in terms of racetrack legacy, he’s still likely to remembered for years to come … and for all the right reasons.

After all, Rich Charm sums up all that is good and great about the Australian thoroughbred

industry: bred by the people who race him … trained out of a stable of six at Cranbourne in Victoria … by a stallion who stands for just $6,600 … and hails from a pedigree that would be deemed ‘humble’ by commercial standards.

Yet, out he comes - on racing’s biggest stage - and snares a Group Two to take his tally to eight wins (two at black type level) and five placings from 17 starts for a whopping $692,900 in stakes.

But the best part of all? His trainer, Udyta Clarke.Just like her Group Two winner, Clarke

is only tiny, but the other thing they have in common is a big heart.

Clarke was mobbed by friends and media in the mounting yard after Rich Charm came from nowhere to get up in a thriller and the 70 year old trainer was punching well above her weight in the celebration stakes, handing out a career’s worth of hugs, handshakes and kisses.

One in 310 Australians is a racehorse owner.

Play video and learn why.

Confessing that she’d nearly scratched the horse earlier in the day after thinking that Rich Charm would struggle against the stables of Weir, Hayes/Dabernig, Snowden, Hawkes, Cummings and co., Clarke was the one left standing tall after the day’s final event.

“It was a tremendous feeling … incredible,” Clarke points out. “As I went to get the colours after the race, everyone just stood around clapping me as I walked past. I felt like bursting into tears.”

And the feeling hadn’t subsided much the morning after the long day before.

When Aushorse caught up with Clarke on Sunday, she was on the tractor grading the 1000m dirt track on her 50 acre property near Cranbourne.

“It’s all been go, go, go since the races,” Clarke reveals. “By the time I got home, I finished up on Saturday night around 1am and was up again early. I agist a few mares for clients as well and I’m walking in two of them (to stallions) tomorrow and have to be on the road at 4am.”

Clearly no rest for the small trainer, even after a big win! “I’m a bit of a workaholic anyway, but you really need to be because I do it all myself. That’s why I’ve only ever had around six horses in work at a time,” Clarke adds.

Having a stop-start career as a trainer, Clarke got a bit more serious about it in the 1990s and, while she’s always had a winner or two to keep the ball rolling, Derby Day was by far her biggest result.

“Rich Charm was bred by Don Allan and myself and we race the horse together,” Clarke explains. “He’s by Danerich, who is actually a very good stallion, while he’s out of a mare that Don and I raced called Charmly.

“We picked up Charmly cheaply from that yearling sale which used to be run at the Showgrounds in Melbourne and she ended up winning a couple of races for us.

“She won her maiden at Bendigo after coming from last (shades of Rich Charm in the TAB Multiplier) and beat a horse called Spurn in the process. Spurn would go on to win a couple of Group races, including the Sunline Stakes, but Charmly always had problems with her back and didn’t do much after that.

“We put her to stud and Rich Charm was her fourth foal … I always put a lot of thought into where I send a mare. I know every breeder has his or her system, but Rich Charm has a cross of Mill Reef and it came up as a 20/20 mating.

“He certainly ran up to it on Saturday!”Udyta Clarke is clearly one of a kind. While a lot of people say -

figuratively - that they live for their horses, the bantamweight trainer takes it to the literal.

“I love my horses … they’re like family to me. They ARE my family,” Clarke believes. “I had hip and knee problems for a couple of years and I was getting around on one of those walking chairs for a while. Horses know when you’re crook and they’d stand stock still for me when I was putting rugs on or generally working around them. Then, when I got better they turned into monsters again, but don’t let anyone tell you they’re not smart.”

And don’t let anyone tell you that Udyta Clarke is out of depth in the mounting yard at Flemington!

Maybe not so rich, but charm a’plenty.

Brazilian horseman Ruan Maia has surged further ahead in the rider’s standings with another dazzling four-timer on Autumn Trophy race

day at Macau’s Taipa racetrack on Saturday.Maia who was a big finisher in last season’s

jockeys’ championships, has kicked this season off with his heart set on being the leading rider. The 29-year-old has come out of the gates flying with a treble on opening day on 23 September, plus two four-timers since then, and on both those occasions unlucky not to make it five for that day.

Meaning Strong (Pendragon) from the combined stable of Rambo Tse and K C Wong was the first of Maia’s four winners when he easily accounted for his rivals in the special conditions handicap over 1200 metres on turf.

Meaning Strong broke his maiden status in good fashion and posted a respectable 1:09.5 for the journey, suggesting he will pick up a few more in the lower grade.

The feature of the day, the Autumn Trophy (Gr 2, 1600m), might have eluded Maia with his luckless second on the favorite Sacred Missile (Smart Missile), but after that there was no stopping him and he retaliated quickly with a big win on Pearl Green (Fastnet Rock) in the following Class Two race over 1500 metres.

Pearl Green made it five wins in a row when he powered away from the pack at the 200 metre mark to continue his rapid rise through the standings. The four-year-old started his winning run on a lowly 38 mark and after Saturday will be close to 70. The son of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) has been a great acquisition for owner Chan Ming Wing and has all the attributes of a serious Macau Derby (MAC Gr 1, 1800m) contender written all over him.

In the 30-60 rated contest over 1800 metres Maia bought the Joe Lau-trained Basement (Ready’s Image) home from a perfectly placed run in transit to beat Flying Team (Pentire), with

Roaring Star (Flying Spur) close up in third spot. This gave Maia three for the day and he

was quick to add the fourth on Niubi Emperor (Duke Of Marmalade) in the next event the 30-55 rated handicap over 1200 metres.

Niubi which is Chinese for awesome is a fitting name for the big imposing son of Duke Of Marmalade (Danehill) who made it three wins from four starts in Macau on Saturday.

Going to scale at 1260 pounds, Niubi Emperor was formerly raced by Gerry Harvey and had two trials in Australia at Randwick under the moniker of He Went That Way. Looking decidedly slow, the gelding was sold onto Macau and has developed into a lovely big horse that is going places, and proved on Saturday that he can handle any surface, wet or firm, on the turf.

Maia at present is on twelve wins in the rider’s standings, four ahead of last year’s champion rider Peter Ho on eight, with Wayne Smith in third spot on five.

Wayne Smith turned in something of a miracle ride on the Peter Leyshan prepared Krystrump (New Stumps) in the final event of the afternoon, a Class Two race over 1500 metres.

Krystrump was sent out a warm favorite at $30 and was drawn ideally in gate number three to get the run of the race in a contest with good speed.

The plans all went astray out of the gates with Krystrump being squeezed out at the jump from Tuhao Power (Conatus) and Same Beauty (Showcasing) who were drawn either side of him. Shuffled well back and on the back of horses that were going nowhere, the son of New Trumps (Cadeaux Genereux) was in need of a miracle coming to the home turn when spotting the leaders twelve lengths ahead.

In the straight the field opened up and Smith began navigating a passage through the field, but the chances of winning still looked forlorn and the gelding even wanted to lay in behind the pack. Space appeared 100 metres out and Krystrump literally jumped out of the ground to win by a neck from Chromium Alloy (Testa Rossa), with Winter Snow (Sepoy) in third.

The time of 1:26.8 was close to Wonder Mossman’s (Mossman) Macau Gold Cup (MAC Gr 1, 1800m) winning time of 1:26.6 from 2016.

By Harry Troy @anz_news

Maia on fire with another four

“That was some win,” said jockey Wayne Smith.

“We got flattened out of the gates and I was a lot further back then I wanted to be and behind horses going nowhere.

“But good horses always get you out of trouble and he is a real good horse this fellow.”

The win was the second leg of a double for Wayne Smith after he gave a faultless front running display on Surdmaster (Al Maher) to win the 25-45 rated contest over 1500 metres.

James Moore’s Kelowna Star (Sufficient) made it back-to-back wins in the Autumn Trophy under a perfect Peter Ho ride to win in identical time of 1:39.00 to what he posted in the 1600 metre sand contest last year.

Ho made full use of his good gate to travel mid against the rail before improving just before the corner. With the leaders rolling away from the rails once heads were turned for home Kelowna Star clicked into overdrive and with a brilliant turn of foot burst to the front along the rails. Race favorite Sacred Missile (Smart Missile), who had no luck at all from his outside barrier of 12, tried valiantly to narrow the margin, but went down by a length and a quarter on the wire, with Winbeauty Infiniti (More Than Ready) a whisker away in third.

The win by Kelowna Star ended the winning sequence of Sacred Missile who had been unbeaten in four runs previous runs

Kelowna Star has now won five races and placed eight times in Macau with over M$2,500,000 in prize money earned.
